Four parts of a lighting control system
Lighting Requirements (ECBC) • Interior spaces of buildings. • Exterior building features, including facades, illuminated roofs, architectural features, entrances, exits, loading docks, and illuminated canopies. • Exterior building grounds lighting that is provided through the building’s electrical service. • Emergency or security lighting that is automatically off during normal building operations Slide: 1/15

Lighting Control (ECBC) • Automatic Lighting Shutoff • Space Control • Control in Daylight Areas • Centralized Controls for ECBC+ and SuperECBC Buildings • Exterior Lighting Control Additional Control

> Controls can be complicated > But even the biggested installation can be broken down into ‘four simple parts’ or ‘building blocks’

1 LUMINARIES
Slide: 4/15
Four parts of a lighting control system
• Firstly the luminaires (light unit) must be capable of being switched ‘on’ and ‘off’ and and preferably ‘dimmed’. • This means that you will need ‘dimmable drivers’ that speak the same signal language as the control system.

• Another key factor is ‘zoning or grouping’, this is where several luminaires in a group operate together. • In other words, they switch ‘on/off or dim’ the same amount at the same time. This is usually achieved by having luminaires with addressable drivers.

2 SENSOR
Slide: 7/15

• Secondly (sensors), there must be one or more input devices which tell the luminaries what to do. • This can be as simple as a manual switch on the wall.

• More often the signal comes from ‘Movement detector’. • ‘Photocells’ are another common input devices. • Note: Sometimes each luminaire will have its own sensor, nut large installations wil group the luminaires together so one sensor alters several luminaires Slide: 9/15

3 CONTROL SYSTEM
Slide: 10/15

• Thirdly, There is a ‘control system’ itself. • This is the brains of the system • The components are often known as 1. Light control modules -LCMs 2. Lighting control panels - LCPs

• These can be programmed and are often linked to the building management system. • You will often find the panel in a ‘ cupboard’ or ‘basement’ control room. • Nowadays, more & more of the electronics are either decentralised across the control system or incorporated into the luminaire or LED light engine & the software is clous based.

4 CONTROL NETWORK
Slide: 13/15

Finally the ‘control network’ is what links the ‘ Luminaires’, ’Sensors’, ’Input devices’ and ‘Control system’ altogether.
Slide: 14/15

• The control network can be hard wired or it can use radio or infrared signals and communicate via the ethernet. • The actual transmitted over the network is known as ‘The communication protocol’ [Ex: DALI, DMX or dinetle but there are many others.]
