Our annual report this year focuses on the threefold theme of formation, faith, and the future. It is our commitment at the University of Dallas to provide transformative education in all of our colleges. This commitment is shaped by our mission, vision, and values. Pope John Paul II calls us to “explore courageously the riches of Revelation and of nature so that the united endeavor of intelligence and faith will enable people to come to the full measure of their humanity,” (Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Intro.). Our entire educational endeavor at the University of Dallas is governed by that charge.

We do not aim simply to educate students. We aim to transform students and, therefore, the world. Our Rome program transforms. Our Capstone Experience in the MBA program transforms. Reading the Iliad transforms. In fact, the rigor of our academic undertakings is such that you cannot study at the University of Dallas without being transformed. Our future is bright. As of today each one of our colleges—Constantin, School of Ministry, College of Business, and the Braniff Graduate School—can boast of increased enrollment. Our endowment passed $50 million for the first time in our history. We are proud to provide new programs and opportunities for our undergraduates—pastoral ministry and computer science majors, a 3/2 nursing program, and an accelerated MBA program. We eagerly await the opening of the University of Dallas DART rail station. We are enthusiastic about the new initiatives for student success—academic advising for current students, career services for all students and alumni, fellowship and scholarship support for current students who wish to continue their studies. THE UD ROME PROGRAM For 40 years, the University of Dallas Rome Program has provided students with an opportunity to pursue an academically rigorous curriculum of study and educational travel that focuses on the ideas, events, and accomplishments of the Western tradition. The Rome Program works in concert with the Core curriculum to intensify the students’ appreciation and understanding of Western civilization through the transformative experiences that thoughtful and informed travel can bring. The Rome program brings the Core’s enduring conversation alive by offering students the chance to see the places and the works of art that figure so prominently into their studies. Aeschylus’ great tragedy the Eumenides begins at Delphi at the Castalian Spring. Students read those lines of Aeschylus next to the Castalian Spring on the Greece trip. They talk about St. Paul while sitting on Mars Hill. This experience brings all of the work in the Core classes to life in a way that traditional study abroad programs, which do not require a specific curriculum of study, cannot and do not.

THE UD CAPSTONE EXPERIENCE The University of Dallas Capstone Experience offers students real projects with real companies. Introduced in 1973 in the College of Business Graduate School of Management (GSM), it has become a hands-on experience that provides relevant outcomes. With guidance from a faculty member, MBA students are able to explore and transform existing business practices to help take the business model to the next level. Student teams explore strategic possibilities, develop client recommendations, and present findings at professional quality. These findings are presented to company executives and make a real impact. Mr. James Kitzmiller, whose company has participated in various Capstone projects, believes that the UD experience prepares students for future leadership roles by providing real world business exposure to the students. Clients of the Capstone Experience range from professional sports teams to top companies in the DFW region, including the Dallas Mavericks, Pizza Inn, St. Luke Catholic School, and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. To date, graduate students in the College of Business have completed nearly 1,000 client projects and have logged more than 40,000 hours on projects with real outcomes.

Formation UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS MINISTRY CONFERENCE For the past 5 years, the University of Dallas Ministry Conference (UDMC) has grown dramatically in attendance and reach. Established in 2007, the first conference hosted 1,000 attendees and has grown to more than 5,000 since that time. The UDMC is co-sponsored by the Diocese of Dallas and the Diocese of Fort Worth and is a required in-service for diocesan educators and administrators. Both diocesan bishops, the Most Reverend Kevin Farrell of the Diocese of Dallas, and the Most Reverend Kevin Vann of the Diocese of Fort Worth have committed to making the UDMC the premier Roman Catholic ministry conference in their respective diocese. Through this annual conference, relevant topics are discussed for those in Catholic education and ministry but also for those who are seeking to enliven their faith. School teachers, principals, deacons, youth ministers, priests, and other professionals come together to network and gain greater insight on faith, theology, parenting and social justice. The conference also offers tri-lingual breakout sessions, which are presented in Spanish, Vietnamese, and English. The UDMC offers something for all Catholics who want spiritual growth.

PASTORAL MINISTRY UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE The undergraduate pastoral ministry major at the University of Dallas combines a deep commitment to the broad educational vision of the liberal arts with a passionate commitment to hands-on service of Christ and his church. During the fall 2011, the University of Dallas welcomed its first pastoral ministry majors. Students who declare this major will come in contact with a blend of great ideas and stories, seminal images and the best of contemporary Catholic thinking and practice which is offered nowhere else. The pastoral ministry major program allows students to interact with skilled ministry professionals, study contemporary documents, and discover and polish skills for service through practical application. The University of Dallas is committed to the Catholic intellectual tradition, and maintaining the dialogue of faith and reason. This major is the answer to the growing ministry needs of the Catholic Church in North Texas. UD is equipping young minds to take on the challenge of ministry in the 21st century.

Future STUDENT SUCCESS INITIATIVE Student success is the heart of our mission at UD. Our aim is always to teach students to love truth and justice and to practice virtue. We don’t stop there, though. We also strive to provide our students the support they need to excel in their studies here at UD and thrive in their lives after they leave UD. We are always looking for new ways to support our students. Our new Student Success Initiative is one such example. The initiative is three-pronged.

The first prong focuses on academic support for current students—retention and graduation. Our new student success advisor, Brandon Jones, will work with students who are in need of additional support.

The second prong is providing help to students who wish to compete for prestigious post-graduate fellowships and scholarships (for example, Fulbright Awards) by identifying and helping develop these students. Dr. Ron Rombs of the theology department is overseeing this initiative.

The third prong is the continuing development of career services for all UD students and alumni. Our new career services team has already made a huge impact on the UD community since their re-structure in March. Traffic through the Career Services office has already increased to more than 2 ½ times the previous rate.

Future A NEW FRONT DOOR UD is getting a new front door! The new University of Dallas DART rail station located at SH-114 and Tom Braniff Drive is scheduled to open in the summer of 2012. This development will put downtown Dallas in the palm of our students’ hands making it easier to travel throughout the Metroplex. Not only will students have an easier time getting out into the Metroplex, but the Metroplex will have an easier time coming to us. The new University of Dallas Orange Line stop will transform UD’s place in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The DART stop will make it even easier for people to attend campus events, such as Drama Department plays, high-profile lectures, or religious events like the Lenten Day of Spirituality or the Mass of the Holy Spirit. In turn, students will be better able to explore Dallas, take jobs and internships downtown, and get to and from the airport. The bridge and walkway connecting the UD DART station with campus will be named the Eugene Vilfordi Way in honor of Gene’s 20-plus years of service as a University of Dallas Trustee. Gene is a pillar of the Dallas Catholic community, particularly through his support of Catholic education. He has served on the boards of the Catholic Foundation, Ursuline and Cistercian Preparatory Schools, and the Dallas Diocese Bishop’s Inner City Schools Board. We are proud that this new front door will be a lasting symbol of Gene’s contributions to the University, the cause of Catholic education, the city of Dallas, and the Catholic Church.
