The University of Dallas, a private Catholic university, pursues truth, virtue and wisdom in the liberal arts and professional studies. Since 1970, the university has offered a Rome semester program as part of its undergraduate curriculum, and for 25 years, the University of Dallas has sought to build on the Rome Program’s extraordinary success by offering engaging summer programs for high school students on its home campus in Texas and its campus on the outskirts of Rome. Our summer programs reflect the Core curriculum of the university, much of which is devoted to the careful reading of the great works in the tradition of Western thought.

Students who participate in a UD high school summer program in Rome and later enroll as an undergraduate student at the University of Dallas will be eligible for a $4,000 scholarship ($1,000 per academic year).

Bringing History and the Arts to Life Rome Campus Just off the Via Appia southeast of Rome, the 14-acre University of Dallas Eugene Constantin Campus at Due Santi rests in the beautiful foothills where ancient Rome got its start and where Romans and popes take their summer holidays. It’s come paradiso — like paradise — on the grounds of this beautiful former villa.

Latin in Rome $3,990 plus airfare – July 8-30, 2019 – Rome Latin in Rome seeks intermediate and advanced students of Latin who desire to refine and deepen their understanding of the language and the Romans who spoke it. In visits to sites in Rome and Naples, grammar becomes a map to a familiar place, and vocabulary a newly discovered old friend.

WHY STUDY LATIN IN ROME?

THE READINGS

We know the advantages that accrue to one’s English vocabulary and one’s understanding of grammar through the learning of Latin; these benefits emerge in a new light when you walk in the steps of Cicero in the Forum or gaze as Juno did from Mount Albano over the fields where Aeneas and Turnus fought (Aeneid XII 134-137).

In this college-level Latin course, the readings, group discussions of texts, and almost daily visits to ancient archaeological sites and museums will support our study of three important epochs of Roman history: The Kings and the Early Republic; The Republic in Decline; and the Early Empire. Readings include passages from Cicero, Pliny, Virgil and Horace.

TRAVEL & STUDY Your classroom is Rome, with faculty guides leading you to sites including the Roman Imperial Fora, the Palatine, the Pantheon, the site of Cicero’s suburban villa and Tusculum. On an extended trip to the Bay of Naples, we visit Pompeii, Cave of the Sibyl, Capri and more.

The program taught me to look into the deeper meanings behind syntax and word choice in the Latin texts we read. It challenged me to work harder and study more as both my skills in translation and the knowledge of Latin grammar grew.” – 2018 Participant

Rome and the Catholic Church $3,500 plus airfare – July 8-30, 2019 – Rome WHY STUDY THEOLOGY IN ROME? This course explores the truth, goodness and beauty of Catholicism as manifested in great theological texts, lives of saints, artistic masterpieces, historical landmarks and miracles connected with The Eternal City. The sites we see dovetail with our readings and bring them to life. We will relish great works of art such as the Pietà, Signorelli’s frescoes and Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, and will celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass where saints have prayed.

THE READINGS Theological classics and great recent works will be read, including authors such as Augustine, Gregory the Great, Justin the Martyr, Thomas Aquinas, Garrigou-Lagrange, Benedict XVI, Bonaventure and Irenaeus.

TRAVEL & STUDY Rome’s great basilicas, including San Pietro, Maria Maggiore and Giovanni Laterano will be explored, in addition to smaller churches. We will also visit the Catacombs, the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Scavi, Tre Fontane, the Pantheon, the Spanish steps, etc. Day trips will be taken to Subiaco, Benedict’s holy cave, and breathtaking Orvieto. Four days will be spent in the Siena, home of St. Catherine, and Assisi, still blessed by St. Francis’ peace.

I made great friends and memories to last a lifetime. I was able to learn more about my faith and deepen my relationship with Jesus as well.” – 2018 Participant

Shakespeare in Italy $3,500 plus airfare – July 8-30, 2019 – Rome WHY STUDY SHAKESPEARE IN ITALY? Studying Shakespeare in Italy means studying in the places that inspired him most; he repeatedly used ancient Rome and Renaissance Italy to consider questions of love, honor, freedom and self-government. We’ve structured this class to ask: Why is he so fascinated with this place? What did he create out of this fascination?

TRAVEL & STUDY Friends, Countrymen: Rome! We’ll take you to the places that informed and inspired the plays: ancient Roman sites like the Forum, where Marc Antony spoke so persuasively over Caesar’s corpse and the very place where Caesar actually died, as well as the Colosseum; Renaissance sites that spurred the art and literature of the age; Venetian sites like the Rialto Bridge, the Doge’s Palace and the first ghetto in Europe; and Baroque sites of marvel and wonder like the Borghese Museum.

THE READINGS & DRAMA We work through three plays carefully so you can experience the wonder of our greatest playwright’s vision. We take on Julius Caesar, that meditation on ancient Rome, Republic, Empire and honor; The Taming of the Shrew, a polemical play about a feisty woman and a domineering husband that is quite controversial today; and The Merchant of Venice, that tale of business, love, law and pity. Students act out scenes, recite sonnets and develop their confidence and ability in public speaking.

It has greatly improved my approach to writing and helped me have a greater appreciation for literature, especially Shakespeare.” – 2018 Participant

Arete $1,250 – June 9-22, 2019 – Irving ARETE: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE CLASSICS Discover how ancient ideas shape and inform contemporary thought through exploring the ancient Greek term aretê, meaning “excellence.” The central theme of Arete: An Introduction to the Classics is the noble life, the life lived by the highest ideals, an idea that has formed the basis of a liberal education and constitutes the foundation on which civilization rests. Over two weeks, in a college setting, students will read important texts from the Bible, Sophocles, Plato, Aristotle, Shakespeare, the

American Founding Fathers, and more modern writers and poets, all while discussing the theme of the noble life and learning firsthand how to live a life of excellence. Participants will also view several serious films, visit celebrated art museums and attend a live Shakespeare production.

I learned a lot about classic literature and morality while making friends of similar interests and having a fun time.” – 2018 Participant

The ultra-modern and sophisticated city attracts worldwide travelers, making the area the No. 1 visitor and leisure destination in Texas. All students participating in Arete and the Summer Math Academy will live on campus to enhance the camaraderie that inevitably develops in a learning community. The Music and Art Academies are day programs with a residential option.

Faculty Whether studying in Italy or Texas, all programs are led by university faculty through small-group discussions and tutorials. The emphasis is not only on enabling students to read with greater insight, but also to become more polished writers, speakers and thinkers, preparing them for success in college while forming the long-lasting friendships that inevitably develop in a learning community. Our professors, instructors and staff on the Rome campus are building on 50 years of experience in Italy. Our scholars are teachers, guides and, in some cases, residents of Italy.
