Summer Programs SHAKESPEARE IN ITALY
LATIN IN ROME
Shakespeare in Italy focuses on Shakespeare and the place that inspired him the most, Italy. The professors lead the students through reading, discussing and enacting the most compelling works of William Shakespeare, including Julius Caesar, The Merchant of Venice and The Taming of the Shrew, amid the enchanting and breathtaking Italian settings of Rome, Venice and Padua. The emphasis is not only on enabling students to read with greater insight but also to become more polished writers and speakers, preparing them for success in college.
Latin in Rome seeks intermediate and advanced students of Latin who desire to refine and deepen their understanding of the language and the Romans who spoke it. Throughout the program, you will study passages from Cicero, Vergil, Livy, Pliny, Tacitus and others to enhance visits to sites in Rome and Naples. Most of the places visited will be immediate subjects of the tutorial sessions, where grammar becomes a map to a familiar place and vocabulary a newly discovered old friend. This program is not simply a summer tour, but a college-level Latin course.

For students curious about a career in art, this oneweek camp is a great opportunity to experience an environment similar to college art classes.
The UD Summer Math Academy introduces high school students to advanced mathematical topics and gives them experience with the mathematical enterprise. Workshops will cover topics in combinatorics, number theory and algebra, but much of the learning will take place in evening problem sessions. Emphasis will be on helping students learn to think logically and rigorously, to prove theorems and to write their results clearly and thoroughly. TO THE CLASSICS Arete: An Introduction to the Classics engages the questions of excellence and the noble life through exploration of essential texts of Western civilization, including those of Plato, Shakespeare and Faulkner. With this broad perspective, students see the trajectory of how ancient ideas continue to shape and inform contemporary thought. Daily lectures by University of Dallas faculty are discussed in depth in small-group seminars where students explore the ideas in the readings and develop a final paper. Students view films, visit celebrated art museums and attend a live Shakespeare production.
