Fractal Geometry
Lecco, Italy 2019
The abandoned quarry, with its severe fractures and natural folds on the ground, served as the inspiration for the design of the master plan. The concept of fractal geometry was incorporated into the design process, which was shaped by the abovementioned unique characteristics of the plot.
The project aims to provide a unique destination for the nearby community and the residents of Lecco to relax, exercise, and pursue new business ventures.
The new buildings and green spaces will facilitate fluid movement between worker and visitors, creating a harmonious environment.

Concept
By analyzing the natural folds and substantial fractures in the abandoned quarry, we were able to identify four red guidelines to serve as a basis for our design. The thinner, straight lines represent paths and streets, while the horizontal line with a curved end indicates the intended position for new buildings.
Fragmentation
Through the superposition of three orthogonal grids, based on the red guidelines from the concept, we were able to determine the fragmented forms that shaped our master plan.
Green spaces
The total area of green spaces accounts for over 70% of the total area.
Circulation
The circulation system is based on the red guidelines from the concept, with a particular focus on the primary roads. The secondary paths are connected to the primary ones and follow the natural folds of the quarry, resulting in shapes inspired by nature.

Connecting Bridge
The bridge serves as a connection between the two main buildings of the project and defines a pathway to the cliff and the Hotel.
Main Square
This central space provides access to key features of the project, including the market, business incubator, and restaurants.
Productive Social Spaces
Thought of as a space with multiple functions to improve productivity where everyone can have better breaks between tasks. We studied the best way to locate the furniture and casework to improve the socialization and overall health of the worker.
Open workspaces
The Business Hub features open workspaces as a central feature to enhance productivity and promote a sense of inclusivity among colleagues. The ‘tree’ columns, which serve to define the space, contribute to a sense of openness and a connection to the surrounding nature.

Casa Cantoniera
Spinone al Lago, Bergamo, Italy 2019
The Cantoniera di Spinone al Lago design aimed to create a welcoming atmosphere for the small community of Spinone al Lago and its visitors. To achieve this goal, we defined three strategies:
- Using nature and the local environment as a “starting point.”
- Incorporating cross-building art exhibitions as a common thread to connect all the spaces.
- Prioritizing accessibility.
By implementing these strategies, we were able to bring new life to the Cantoniera by constructing a new building and restoring the existing structure. The result is a series of inviting spaces where people can relax, discover new art forms, and enjoy the beautiful views of the lake. These spaces are meant to be used and enjoyed by travelers, residents of Spinone al Lago, and neighbors alike.

Floor plan - Basement
The exhibition area displays art and is defined by a series of wooden slats positioned strategically outside the new structure. The transparency of the structure emphasizes the importance of including and showcasing the surrounding nature of Val Cavallina and Lake Endine.
Floor Plan - Level 1
The lobby serves as a gateway to the history of the Cantoniera House through the display of art and old objects found in its abandoned storage. The two rooms on either side function as art exhibitions and workspaces, while the central room serves as a common area. Visitors can access the panoramic terrace on the roof of the new addition through the lobby.

Third Floor
The new roof features a series of exposed beech wood beams that enhance the warm ambiance of the top floor. Custom-built furniture made of local wood is used to efficiently utilize small spaces.
Panoramic terrace
This component serves as the accessible roof of the new structure and is intended for temporary exhibitions.
First Floor
Custom-built furniture, made from local materials, helps to define the spaces and promote well-being and social interaction among those residing in the hostel.
Basement
The kitchen of the new Cantoniera house are located on the sides of the room, while the central space is reserved for everyday living and socializing.

Martinelli Square, which served as a forum for the Roman city in ancient times, was the point of convergence of the Cardo Maximus and the Decumanus Maximus
In an effort to revitalize this historic square and restore its former glory, the project aims to create a new public space that will improve commercial activity, provide opportunities for local artists, and be enjoyed by the residents and tourists of Como.
The new structure, which is inspired by classical architecture, is a hypostyle hall with a square plan divided into six naves by tall columns. Its position aligns with the axis of the Decumanus, serving as a standard line for the internal system and establishing order in the surrounding space. In addition, circulation elements have been added on the left and at the back, providing access to Level 0 and the “Elevated Square”.

The Talent Maker City (TMC) building is designed with inclusivity and resilience as its primary objectives. This includes considering all community members’ skills and perspectives and actively seeking partnerships with organizations that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Ensuring universal access is a priority throughout the building to ensure that all individuals have equal opportunities. Additionally, the TMC building will embody the value of resilience, which is essential to the Talent, OR community after the 2020 Almeda Fire damaged part of the Historic Centre. This will be achieved through the use of fireresistant materials and sustainable building systems.
Ultimately, the goal of the TMC building is to create a collaborative and adaptable structure that effectively serves the Talent, OR community, and future generations.

Schematic Design
The design process has involved gathering information from the Design Team and incorporating standard input and feedback sessions with the TMC Team, who serve as the primary decision-makers in the design process. In addition to considering input from the TMC Team, the Design Team also considered the feedback of community members in Talent.
The design process began with the redesign of the Legacy Floorplan. It continued with the exploration of various forms through various studies focusing on using fire-resistant materials. In addition, the Old Town Design Standards of Talent were also considered in the design process, including the selection of specific materials, the percentage of glazing on the front street elevation, and the impact on adjacent historical buildings such as The Malmgren Garage, which inspired the shape of the TMC’s facade.
The Historical Malmgren Garage inspired the shape of the facade. All the drawings on this page are produced by the applicant.
Solar Studies
Through research, it was determined that summer temperatures can reach above 110 degrees Fahrenheit in Talent, OR. This information aided the design team in determining the most effective shading system to mitigate the summer heat, including options such as awnings, fins, and a large cantilevered overhangs.
Solar studies produced by the applicant.
Site Section and Views
One of the main objectives in the design of the building’s front street facade was to capture pedestrians’ attention. We aimed to design a front elevation that was open, welcoming, and shielded from direct sunlight while complying with the Old Town Building Code and utilizing fire-resistant materials in light of the 2020 Almeda Fire that caused widespread destruction in the Talent Community.
