Master of Education in Teacher Leadership

UD combines educator development centers to expand services

Online graduate degree program focused on equipping teachers to be leaders in the classrooms and in their schools. See page 21.

The University of Delaware recently created the Center for Educational Leadership, Teaching and Learning (CELTL), uniting professionals from the Delaware Academy of School Leadership (DASL), UD’s Professional Development Center for Educators (PDCE) and the Southern Delaware Professional Development Center (SDPDC). With this merger, the Center for Educational Leadership, Teaching and Learning now has a unified mission to facilitate ongoing professional learning opportunities for educators that maximize student growth through the use of research-based practices. “Our vision for CELTL is to become an eminent professional learning organization for educators in Delaware, the region and across the nation,” said Carol Vukelich, dean of UD’s College of Education and Human Development. “These three centers have served the Delaware K-12 education community for more than a decade. Merging into one cohesive unit allows us to more effectively leverage our collective expertise to support our colleagues in K-12 schools,” said Jackie Wilson, director of CELTL.

Resources and services include: • Professional support to classroom teachers in core content areas • Partnerships with teachers to solve problems of practice • Grant-funded professional learning opportunities • Research-based professional learning programs in specific disciplines • Leadership coaching and professional development opportunities for school leaders Wilson plans to expand CELTL’s reach regionally and nationally. Educators interested in partnering with CELTL or who are looking for more information about CELTL’s services should contact Emily Poag at emilyp@udel.edu or 302-831-1279.

With our household in need of some additional financial support, I decided to return to my ‘first love,’ and it was the right time to reactivate my RN licensure.” “The online format of UD’s RN Refresher Course was great. Class accessibility was so easy, and I also enjoyed the ability to ‘replay’ the instructors as needed in the lecture videos. And I loved taking my textbooks to the beach and reading them there while listening to the waves! The support of the faculty, the online class discussions, and the online class overall were wonderful.” “To complete the clinical nursing hours, I was able to find a participating hospital facility that was not too far away from where I live. monique neal Paralegal Certificate program graduate “I began college with the goal of pursuing law school. My path deviated, and I spent much of my career as a teacher in the prep boarding school world.” “Having earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Delaware, I returned to UD to pursue the Paralegal Certificate.” “The program is rigorous and demands one be dedicated and steadfast, but the instructors are committed to student success, and they are quite giving of their time and expertise. The evening classes, the legal practitionerinstructors, the Wilmington location, and the academic rigor all created a ‘True Blue’ UD experience. I have had many doors open to me since completing the program.” “I enjoy the dynamic, team-driven nature of worker’s compensation and personal injury law. Every day presents a new challenge and, usually, a new success. My Paralegal Certificate has allowed me to do traditional paralegal/ law firm work, as well as project management.” Pictured here with a photo of her mother’s 1957 UD graduating class, Neal adds, “Along with my twin brother and niece, I am proud to be a UD ‘legacy.’ Our late mother Gwendolyn Roberts was among the first black Americans to attend and graduate from the University of Delaware.” Monique Neal completed the University of Delaware’s Paralegal Certificate Program and has since completed a law firm internship and is now working as a paralegal at of one of Delaware’s oldest law firms.

Does your workplace safety program measure up?

Do news stories of workplace incidents make you wonder if your workplace is as safe as it could be? The ideal workplace safety program should empower employees to recognize and identify hazards—and offer ways to avoid those hazards on the job. Ask yourself: • Do I know what to do if someone in my workplace experiences an on-the-job injury? • Do I know why employees violate safety rules even when they know it’s not safe to do so? • Do I want to learn how my company can save thousands of dollars every year just by making a few simple changes? • Do I want to learn how to identify and implement the OSHA regulations that apply to particular hazards in my workplace? • Do I know the true costs of an accident—including hidden costs? • Do I know what it takes to set up an effective health and safety program and how to present that information to company leaders? • Do I want to enhance my current safety knowledge or prepare for opportunities in the safety and health field? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the Certified Occupational Safety Specialist® (COSS) program is for you. The COSS program blends safety management development with regulatory training and focuses on how safety regulations apply to everyday workplace scenarios. After completing this program, you will return to your job with a greater understanding of the safety considerations that affect your roles and responsibilities.

What members say... rewards of volunteering “The rewards for volunteering are in many ways adding more to my life than a bank could hold. I am surrounded by people with like interests. I have new goals every day. My self-esteem has improved as well as my health and general well-being.” Continuing to experience delight “We are committed to bring the fullness of our life experiences to share with others. I find new opportunities to serve in ways that I never dreamed possible.” “Osher provides the opportunity to learn things I’d like to know about, to meet people I would otherwise not have met, and to benefit from both. I participate in the program because I want to stay active intellectually and physically, and Osher provides for both.” great camaraderie “It’s the excitement of regaining curiosity about all things great and small, a new challenge, a celebration with many ‘wow’ moments, great camaraderie, knowledgeable instructors and shared laughter and memories.” “Each semester’s new catalog is a treasure. I find new and interesting course offerings and meet new friends and, of course, get to catch up and socialize with old friends!”

Liisa Trala UD osher Lifelong Learning institute member, Dover “When you hear the word ‘school’ or ‘classes,’ maybe your mind immediately thinks of writing essays or taking exams. Well, mine did, but that's not the case at OLLI. Learning is fun, exciting and completely test-free. Another great perk is the new friendships I've made.” “My experience with the OLLI program started when a friend invited me to sit in on a class. I did and was graciously welcomed as a visitor. When the next semester’s catalog came out, I was amazed at the wide range of classes available. I signed up, and have been a part of Osher Lifelong Learning since then.” “I've had the pleasure of being an oil painting instructor at OLLI. It's so great to share my love and enthusiasm for oils with other members. I love seeing them grow and develop that 'sparkle' in their eyes. What a great experience.” “I hope if you are 50+ years old you will give OLLI a try. The enjoyment, fun and excitement of being an OLLI member is boundless. Besides attending classes of your choice, there are trips, special events, and numerous activities that you can be a part of. There is fun around every corner.” Liisa Trala of Townsend, Del., has been member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Delaware since 2012. Initially signing up for art classes, she later began sharing her knowledge as an art instructor, serving on the OLLI council, teaching art and serving on the member relations and special events committees.
