Nutrition and Healthy Aging: Age-Related Disorders Such as Heart Disease, Diabetes, Cancer and Dementia Nasir bashirelahi, PhD
What is the role of nutraceuticals in healthy aging and disease? What do you need to know about the human microbiome and probiotics? Participants will learn what is cutting-edge in the field of nutrition involving human health and disease. With average life expectancy increasing without a proportionate increase in quality of life, this course provides insight into this emerging disparity. At the end of this course, participants will be able to: • Explain nutraceuticals and their role in promoting healthy aging • Describe the critical role of the human microbiome This presentation is appropriate for dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants.

Tuesday, August 1 • 10 a.m.–noon
Teledentistry Anthony J. Mendicino Jr., DDS
• Identify the roadblocks discussed in teledentistry • Identify the successes discussed in teledentistry • Illustrate a real time teledental demonstration
The use of telemedicine and teledentistry is a promising option for both patients and providers. Teledentistry in particular has the potential to increase access to care by linking patients with specialists in any part of the country for consultation and/ or treatment. This becomes beneficial for rural patients who may have travel issues and may live hours away from a hospital or specialist.
This presentation is appropriate for dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants.
This lecture will review the equipment and technology required to carry out a telemedicine/teledental consult, using the Finger Lakes Community Health teledental program history as an example. The roadblocks we encountered and the “behind the scenes” components that made the program a success will be shared. We will also do a real-time demonstration. At the end of this course, participants will be able to: • Recognize the equipment and technology required for a telemedicine/ teledental consult
Dr. Anthony Mendicino received his undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester, and his dental degree from the State University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He completed a general practice residency at the Veterans Medical Center in Buffalo, NY. Dr. Mendicino has 26 years’ clinical experience in community dental health. He serves as the dental director as well as a dentist for Finger Lakes Community Health, overseeing dental services at eight fixed sites as well as an extensive mobile dental program across Western New York State. Dr. Mendicino was the recipient of the Dr. Gary Ogden Rural Health Practitioner of the Year award in 2012 from the New York Association for Rural Health.

The New Marijuana and Its Impact on You, Your Family and Your Dental Practice Harold L. Crossley, DDS, PhD
At this time, 23 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana in some form. Several states have decriminalized the possession of marijuana in small amounts. Eight states have legalized marijuana for recreational purposes. Some of these marijuana users will be treated by the dentist and staff. Once the “high” from marijuana wears off, are there lingering effects? Are there any drug interactions between marijuana and drugs administered in the office? Why is the marijuana of today more dangerous and more potent? What is “synthetic” marijuana? Are there legitimate medical uses for marijuana? This presentation will discuss some of the concerns about marijuana use, its bearing on dental
treatment, and a pharmacologic basis for medical uses. At the end of this course, participants will be able to: • List some medical conditions treatable with marijuana • Describe the pharmacologic effects of marijuana • Define “synthetic” marijuana • Describe the growth characteristics of marijuana This seminar is appropriate for dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, office staff and spouses. Must be 18 years of age or older to attend. No exceptions.
Harold L. Crossley, DDS, PhD is professor emeritus at the University of Maryland Dental School. He later was awarded master of science (1970) and doctoral degrees (1972) in pharmacology. The University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore awarded Dr. Crossley his DDS in 1980. His role as liaison between the classroom and his dental practice produced a practical approach to understanding the pharmacology of drugs used in the dental office. Dr. Crossley has co-authored a number of articles and four books dealing with a variety of topics within the field of pharmacology. Other areas of expertise include the pharmacology of street drugs and chemical dependency. Dr. Crossley serves on the Maryland State Dental Association’s Well-Being Committee, was a member of the University Interdisciplinary Committee for Drug Abuse Education and served on the Governor’s Commission on Prescription Drug Abuse. He is an active member of Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society, the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists and an honorary member of the Thomas B. Hinman Dental Society. He was the recipient of the 2008 Gordon Christensen Lecturer Recognition award presented by the Chicago Dental Society and the recipient of the 2012 Award of Distinction presented by the Academy of Dentistry International for his efforts in Continuing Dental Education. He has been a consultant for the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and other law enforcement agencies since 1974. Drawing on this unique background, Dr. Crossley has become nationally and internationally recognized as an expert on street drugs and chemical dependency as well as the clinical pharmacology of dental drugs.

polishing—all of which are essential clinical components to achieving longlasting esthetic restorations.
Direct posterior composite restorations are among the most frequently performed restorative procedures, yet dentists often struggle with placement techniques, options for consistently generating ideal inter-proximal contact and post-operative sensitivity. There are several key elements that determine the success of direct esthetic restorations—including tooth preparation, material choice, placement technique and curing method. This presentation will review and update clinicians on how each element can play a critical role in the creation of a consistently successful restoration.
At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to: • Analyze resin composite material properties • Discuss “then and now” composite characteristics • Explain adhesion, current products and their function in modern day dentistry • Determine techniques for handling and placement of modern adhesives and composites • Determine techniques for generating ideal anatomic interproximal contacts • Apply polishing and sealing techniques for long-term durability
This program will also review current concepts on adhesive dentistry with a focus on the Universal Adhesives. These new products allow clinicians to choose how and when to use phosphoric acid, which may help create a strong and durable bond and help mitigate postoperative sensitivity.
This seminar is appropriate for dentists.
This program is funded in part by an educational grant from Dentsply Sirona.
Additional topics include proper composite selection and placement techniques, the importance of light curing, anatomical contouring, and finishing and

• Review proper impression-taking techniques and troubleshoot common errors • Discuss provisional crown materials and provisional cement choices • Discuss and demystify definitive cementation options with emphasis on the right cement for the right clinical situation
The single-unit crown procedure has a significant impact on the profitability of a restorative dental practice. by addressing the critical steps in the single-unit crown procedure, clinicians can deliver greater efficiency, predictable clinical outcomes, enhanced auxiliary staff usage and overall patient satisfaction. To achieve a strong foundation and longterm success, clinicians need a solution that simplifies the procedures of preparation, provisionalization, impression making and cementation. Discussing the steps of the single unit crown procedure will help provide a complete solution for overall restoration success, reliability and longevity.
This seminar is appropriate for dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants.
This program is funded in part by an educational grant from Dentsply Sirona.
Using a case-based approach, this presentation is designed for the entire dental team. At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to: • Discuss the benefits and possible materials for a matrix impression • Review preparation design with emphasis on matching design with substrate
