At the University of Evansville, studentathletes get the full college experience, including a great education. With a 14:1 student-ratio and average class sizes of 18 students, UE offers more than 80 areas of study. Evansville also gives students the opportunity to study abroad at its British campus, Harlaxton College, located in Grantham, England. With so many things to offer, it is no surprise that UE is continually recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of “America’s Best Colleges in the Midwest” and “Best Values in the Midwest”.

Evansville is located in Southwestern Indiana and has a little something for everyone. With a population of 125,000 and a metropolitan area of 280,000, Evansville is the 3rd largest city in Indiana. Evansville is located between many major cities, including Louisville, Nashville, St. Louis, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati. The local business community is strong and holds many internship and career opportunities for UE students upon graduation. People of all ages can find their place in Evansville with a large assortment of venues and events. The city’s great venues include Victory Theatre, The Centre, The Entertainment District, and the brand new downtown arena, Ford Center. A few of the major events hosted in Evansville are the Fall Festival, Freedom Festival, and various concert and sporting events.

nsville University of Evansville student-athletes have many opportunities to volunteer and give back to local organizations. Studentathletes accumulated over 2,600 hours in community service last year alone. The swimming & diving teams have participated in several local service projects, such as the “Just Read! program at local elementary schools, which is sponsored by the Missouri Valley Conference.

Facilities Roy and Mary Wyttenbach Pool is located in the Carson Center of UE’s campus and serves as the home of the University of Evansville’s Swimming and Diving team. The pool has 6 lanes and also features a 1m and a 3m diving board. The locker room is currently undergoing a $108,000 renovation. The upgrade includes new flooring, carpeting and locker installation. New showers and a lounge area will also be In the off-season, the added for the Aces train in UE’s weight teams. room under direction of Joe Hermes, head strength & conditioning coach. The Aces also incorporate dry land training, using medicine ball workouts, circuit training, and cardio conditioning to improve their strength and endurance in the pool.

Academic Support Success in the classroom is important for student-athletes. The University of Evansville offers the use of the Beeler Family Athletics Academic Center, which offers study resources for student-athletes. The Beeler Center gives athletes full access to computers, printers, and wireless internet as well as a quiet place to study 24 hours a day.

Athletic Training The UE athletic training staff makes sure that each player is in top physical condition before competition ever begins. The athletic trainers work with each athlete to prevent injuries and rehabilitate athletes quickly so they can get back into the pool as soon as possible.

Weight Room Head strength & conditioning coach Joe Hermes is dedicated to improving UE athletes in all aspects of physical development. “The goal of our program,” said Hermes, “is to consistently train each day with the drive to overcome individual, mental and physical weakness through appropriate player-specific programs.”

Academics The University of Evansville ranks among the best academically and therefore the Aces pride themselves on their education. Last season’s squad received multiple academic awards and national recognition for their academic efforts. Individually, three male team members were chosen to the MAC scholar-athlete team, while ten women were named to MVC scholar-athlete team. Christina Schmidgall and senior Colin Gray received the prestigious title of Capital One/CoSIDA AtLarge Academic All-American. As a team, both men’s and women’s squads earned the CSCAA Scholar All-America Award for their work in the classroom.

2011-12 Season Ou The University of Evansville swimming and diving team is looking forward to a strong showing in the 2011-2012 season. Having depth within the team will be a key tool in being successful this season. The Aces will welcome 20 newcomers to this year’s team, adding on to the already strong roster. The Aces look to the core group of upperclassmen to help guide the new teammates and lead the teams to winning seasons. Head coach Rickey Perkins explained that this season the team is focusing on individual effort in order for the team to be successful as a whole. “This year we have really stressed the idea that every swimmer must have a strong “I-statement” before they can help push the team,” says Perkins. “I want each individual to take it upon themselves to do the little things correctly and focus on what they can do individually to help the team. Only after pushing yourself to be the best swimmer, individually, can you then motivate the team to be the best team as a whole.”

Women’s Team The women’s squad is coming off a successful 2010-11 season that saw eight MVC Swimmers/Divers of the Week, two NCAA Zone C qualifiers and six swimmers named to the all-MVC team. After a fourth-place finish in the 2011 Valley Championships, Perkins is looking to keep improving and working for an even better placing this season. Perkins will be looking to senior swimmer Alex Howard’s strong leadership to be the push that the team needs to succeed. “Alex encourages her team. She doesn’t try to boss them around, instead she pushes and drives them by setting an example in herself,” comments Perkins on Howard’s contagious motivation. Last year, Howard was a top swimmer for the women, earning Swimmer of the Week on January 18 while finishing with 10 first place finishes on the season. She set a new UE record in the 100-back, breaking Erin Amason’s 2001-02 time. Perkins expects 2011 MVC Co-Diver of the Year Sadie Wells to have another successful season on the boards. Wells returns after winning 14 diving events on the year and earning MVC Diver of the Week five times last season.

Men’s Team

After joining a tough Mid-American Conference two years ago, the men’s team has risen to the challenge and strengthened as a program. Last year, Andy Balczo and junior Alex Seward made history as they became the first UE men to ever be named MAC Swimmer Of The Week. This year, Perkins looks to Seward, senior Jake Harrington and junior Kyle Tiemann to lead the men’s squad to another strong season. All three have shown notable leadership qualities in the past, and Perkins believes that they are ready to step up and be the driving force behind an already competitive men’s team.
