Following a 17-13 campaign in 2010, the University of Evansville women’s volleyball team is set for its 2011 slate, which is set to begin on August 26. Head coach Mike Swan is entering his ninth season at the helm and is excited about what lies ahead for the Purple Aces. Swan returns an experienced squad of ten players, including five starters. While the team will miss graduated senior Emily Wandersee, the Purple Aces have plenty of experience coming back. Seniors Brooke Maher and Ellen Sawin lead the way for UE. Maher, an outside hitter, led the team with 331 kills last season. Her average of 3.48 per set was sixth best in the Missouri Valley Conference. Sawin was one of just two players, along with Kaisi Nixon, to start all 30 matches a season ago. The setter averaged 9.81 assists per set, sixth best in the league. Also competing for a starting spot will be sophomore Jenn Murphy. She appeared in 17 tilts as a frosh, notching 103 assists, second on the team. Outside hitter is a position of great depth for the Aces. Along with Maher, juniors Jessica Knackmuhs and Hannah Wilson, sophomore Lauren Seyller and freshman Ashley Ring will fill out the spots. Wilson saw action in 30 matches as a junior making a start on 17 occasions, recording 259 kills. Knackmuhs made 19 appearances putting up 43 kills. Seyller and Ring are both newcomers to the Purple Aces. Seyller is a transfer from Ohio University while Ring comes to UE from Edgewood HS in Madison, Wisc. Senior Kaisi Nixon brings back experience at the middle hitter position. She started all 30 contests in 2010, leading UE with 91 blocks. She is joined at that spot by Rachel TenHoor and Meagan Holmes. TenHoor played in 26 matches as a freshman while Holmes, a native of Lawrence, Kan. will begin her collegiate career. Evansville returns three defensive specialists, including April Lubrecht, Katie Klages and Caitlin Wickes. Klages found her way into all 30 matches as a freshman, recording a team-high 482 digs. Lubrecht appeared in 25 contests in her junior campaign, notching 216 digs while Wickes saw action on eight occasions. The Purple Aces open the season with weekend tournaments in Greensboro, N.C. and Valparaiso, Ind. Following a midweek contest against Murray State, UE host the Dunn Hospitality Invitational. Participants include Southeast Missouri State, UIC and Arizona, a 2010 NCAA Tournament participant. The Aces will face another NCAA team, Cincinnati, on Sept. 20. Missouri Valley play commences on Sept. 16 at Bradley. The 18-game slate features eight matches against 2010 NCAA postseason squads as four MVC schools advanced to the tournament including Northern Iowa, Creighton, Wichita State and Missouri State. After playing five of its first seven conference contests on the road, the Purple Aces wrap up the year with five of their final seven matches at the Carson Center.

Eight years ago, the University of Evansville set out to rebuild a volleyball program and entrusted the process to an experienced coach who had proven he knew how to win. In the years following the hire, Mike Swan has built Evansville into a Missouri Valley Conference contender and established himself as one of the sport’s top coaches. “Rebuilding in the MVC is a much longer process than I expected because the MVC is so strong,” Swan said. “In the last two or three years, we have been able to find our niche in recruiting because girls want small environments with strong academics. Because of everything UE provides, we have had strong recruiting classes the last few years.” It didn’t take long for Swan to see that the Evansville campus and community was a match for him as a professional and in his everyday life. The 2010 season marked Swan’s longest coaching tenure at one school. “Evansville just proves to be a great fit for me,” Swan said. “It continues to improve, and I feel more confident that this is a great place to be in and the right fit for me. I consistently have great assistants to help challenge the players, which is also an extra bonus. “With the small environment and the friendships I have made with the coaches and the community, I continue to love it here at Evansville,” Swan said. “It just has so much to offer for me personally.” When first arriving at Evansville in January of 2003, Swan inherited a team that had just won five games the previous season. Although it would be a major obstacle in Swan’s career, he quickly turned the program in a new direction. After two seasons with the Aces, he more than doubled Evansville’s 2002 win total. Before his time at UE, Swan had proven that he was a winner. While at Morehead State, Swan was named the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2001 and led the school to second-place OVC finishes in both 2001 and 2002. In his final three seasons with the Eagles, Swan’s teams were averaging over 20 wins per season and posted regional rankings during his last two campaigns at MSU. Swan’s defensive mindset also played a tremendous role for Morehead State as the school was ranked among the nation’s leaders in digs per game in four out of Swan’s five seasons as head coach. Twice Swan took the Eagles as high as second in the nation in digs per game, including his final season when the team averaged 21.4 digs per game. Prior to taking over the helm at Morehead State, Swan spent a season at NCAA Division II American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts, where the Yellow Jackets recorded a 23-10 mark in 1997. A native to the state of Indiana, Swan was called upon to resurrect a program that had fallen on hard times in his home state. Swan brought his golden touch to Manchester College and guided a school that had only won two matches one season before to its second-highest victory total ever after three seasons. Swan also directed the teams at Huntington College to new heights during his eight-year tenure with the Foresters. As head coach, he guided Huntington to national prominence at the NAIA level. In 1993, Swan led the program to a 36-9 overall record, No. 11 national ranking and an appearance in the NAIA national championship tournament. Named conference “Coach of the Year” in seven out of his eight seasons at Huntington, Swan’s highest honor came after the 1993 campaign as he was named Mid-East Region Coach of the Year. Swan’s head coaching career began at Southwood High School in Wabash, Indiana, where he led the Knights to a 115-37 mark in six seasons and helped Southwood reach the state semifinals in 1983. A product of Lagro, Indiana, Swan graduated from Manchester College in 1979 with a degree in Secondary Education. He is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and has a Level II certification through the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA).
Purple Aces assistant coach Josh Wielebnicki is set to begin his second season at the University of Evansville. He joined the Aces’ staff last season after serving as the top assistant at Western Carolina in 2009. In his first season at UE, he helped the team get off to a blazing 11-1 start to the year and helped the squad finish the season with an 11-1 mark in non-conference play. At Western Carolina, he worked primarily with outside hitters and defensive specialists, along with directing program camps and managing fundraising efforts. Wielebnicki also headed the recruiting for WCU, bringing in one of the best recruiting classes in the Southern Conference for 2010. “I am excited and eager to have Josh on staff here at UE,” said head coach Mike Swan. “He is a very likeable guy with the type of volleyball background I was hoping to find, and since he was already familiar with the Missouri Valley Conference, I knew this was a perfect choice. He is going to bring enthusiasm and great experience to our program.” Prior to working at Western Carolina, Wielebnicki served as both a student manager and student assistant coach at Missouri Valley Conference rival Illinois State. While there, he helped see the 2007 Redbirds to a runner-up finish in the MVC and later advance on to the 2007 NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection. Wielebnicki also played collegiately at Illinois State, where he served as co-captain and vice president of the Illinois State men’s club volleyball team and helped the Redbirds to a third place finish at the Division I-AA national tournament in 2008. Wielebnicki began his college career at Lewis University, playing two season of Division I volleyball before transferring to Illinois State in 2006. A native of suburban Chicago, Wielebnicki graduated from Illinois State in 2008 with a degree in history.
Stephanie Budde enters her first season as the program’s graduate assistant coach. “I am really happy to announce Stephanie as our new assistant coach,” said Swan. “She was a very successful setter at the Division I level and has experience coaching with Sports Performance in Chicago, likely the premier club in the country. “ “I wanted someone with a setting background and with her ties to the Chicago area she will be invaluable in our recruiting efforts,” added Swan. “She is a great hire for UE and our program.” Budde comes to Evansville after a season-long stint as the head coach of a club team, 17 Runbird, at Sports Performance, which she guided to a ninth place finish at nationals. Budde also gained coaching experience while a student-athlete at Central Michigan University, working summer camps and clinics throughout her four years. As a player, Budde was a two-year team captain and a second team All-MAC selection in 2008. She was recognized as a Dick Enberg Award finalist and finished her career ranked 10th in total assists by a Chippewa. Budde also attended the 2009 National Team tryouts in Colorado. A native of Joliet, Ill., Budde majored in health fitness and minored in psychology at Central Michigan University, receiving her degree in 2010. While at UE, she will be pursuing her masters in health administration.
