He was a Concerto Finalist in the BBC Young Musicians Competition in 2004. “Flautist Adam Walker is a stunning talent…It was not simply Walker‘s display of virtuosity – graceful and apparently effortless – that was astonishing, but his ability to characterise the music so vividly.” The Guardian “…wonderfully evocative performance of Debussy‘s Prélude à L‘Après-midi d‘un faune in which Adam Walker‘s solo flute playing was quite simply superb.” www.musicomh.com Barbican / London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jan Pascal Tortelier

Educational For decades the excellence of Frans Vester’s three collections of studies (easy, middle grade and more advanced) from the “classical” composers of the 18th and 19th centuries, from Frederick the Great and Hotteterre to Gariboldi and Köhler, has been self evident. Peter Lukas Graf Flautist and conductor www.peterlukasgraf.ch Frans Vester Frans Vester’s famous collections of studies are an ideal introduction to the stylistic aspects of music from the 18th and 19th centuries. Selected from the works of famous flautists such as Devienne, Böhm and Köhler, Vester’s compilations of this standard repertoire are quite unique.

These charming Mozart arrangements from the late 18th and early 19th c. are, to this day, enjoying increasing popularity. At the time, their publication solved the issue of having to remember musical themes heard at the opera in order to play them. Today – perhaps it works the other way – these duets may actually introduce the young to the music of Mozart. “In this sense, and apart from the pleasure of making music, these beautiful editions from Universal Edition are highly recommended.” (P. 20th Century Universal Edition’s flute catalogue embraces the most notable early 20th c. repertoire from the heart of Europe (Hungary-Austria-Germany-Switzerland), where, at that time, significant developments in musical history began – changing enormously strong traditions of the musical world. It is frankly an unbelievable collection of master works from composers such as Bartók, Schönberg, Strauss and Martin – a wonderful, momentous and visionary musical language which enriches the flautist’s repertoire. Emmanuel Pahud Principal flautist of the Berliner Philharmoniker and chamber musician
Frank Martin
Deuxième Ballade
In 2008, Martin’s widow found a previously unnoticed manuscript of Martin’s own arrangement for flute and piano or string orchestra, piano and percussion of Ballade, which he had composed in 1938 for saxophone. This exquisite arrangement has undoubtedly enriched the modern flute repertoire. For flute and piano UE 34699 [7-8]

Ballade of 1939 – a mixture of various contemporary musical styles – shows, very clearly Martin’s compositional pathway. This piece occupies a firm position in the modern flute repertoire. Flute and piano (G. Braun / P. Robison) UE 18034 [6-8]
Strauss’s Sonata op.18 for violin was perhaps the most popular of his chamber works. Here Emmanuel Pahud presents an arrangement for flute and piano offering not only members of the audience, but flautists them selves, a personal introduction to Strauss’s early works. For flute and piano UE 33383 [6-8]

The Wind Quintet op. 26 is considered to be early evidence of Schönberg’s progressive work with the 12-note method. Schönberg’s son-in-law, Felix Greissel made this arrangement in 1926 in order to promote further performances of the work. For flute (violin) and piano UE 8375 [8]

Syrinx “La Flûte de Pan” This edition is based on a manuscript discovered in the 1990s. La Flute de Pan was first performed in 1913 by Louis Fleury as an accompaniment to the play Psyché by Gabriel Mourey. This more recent source has made it possible to see the alignment of the music precisely with the corresponding text in the drama. This has been documented through extensive use of pictures and text in the publication. (M. Stegemann / A Ljungar-Chapelon) UT 50173 [5-7] Wiener Urtext Edition

Contemporary I was delighted about the concept of this publication from the very beginning. We have successfully convinced renowned composers to write pieces of high artistic value which, contrary to many contemporary pieces, can be played not only by professionals but also by more advanced students. This book is an exciting step into the world of new music.

Sonatine is considered to be the work with which Boulez entered the musical stage. Impressed by twelve-note music, he based this work on the structure of Schönberg’s op. 9.
