Basic Groove Variationen
Basic Groove Variations
The following variations of the basic groove (see The New Flute, p. 24) should be practised, at first, without the flute. Play the variations looping each single bar. Use a metronome on beats 2 and 4. Your main goal is to execute the rhythm with clockwork precision. Always remember: you are imitating a digital machine – the mesmerizing effect of beatboxing will appear when your beat is convincingly groovy.

Level 1 – Bronze
Level 1 – Bronze The T’ sound is quite similar to the regular flute tonguing. Start by playing all notes assigned with a T’ as strongly articulated accents. Later on change them into a clear hi-hat sound and add more hiss, but without interrupting the melodic line.

In bar 21 you may keep the low D ♭ key depressed for the whole bar, also the low C key on the first beat of bar 22.

This old disco classic should not be played too fast. The riffs in bars 7 to 10 must be sung very loudly, so the listener can hear them well. Should you decide to play this piece without singing, always play the notes that have beatbox syllables above them. Bars 7 through 21 can be played an octave higher.

Flute-beatboxing is the most impressive when the listener is already familiar with the melodies. Therefore I have selected some well-known classics and arranged them for beatbox flute. Your creativity is needed here: you can repeat, combine and omit segments at your own will. For presenting them as performance pieces, you can start with a few bars of beatboxing and bring in the melody later on. Or, you can play the melody alone first and add a beatbox groove later on.
