Heartful thanks for all you do!
—Dimity Carlson
THESTUARTSOCIETY THANK YOU for the privilege of serving as your Stuart Society President this year. It has sometimes been challenging and I have from time to time been sleep deprived but It has always been a meaningful, stimulating and rewarding experience and I am delighted to have had this opportunity. Two things in particular have made my job so worthwhile. One is the Museum. The very small bit (in the big picture of things) that I did was because I appreciate and want to support The Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. We are so fortunate to live in a city of our size that has such a rich cultural environment. Even more awesome is knowing that our Museum is the founder, in front and at the center of all this artistic vibe. Best of all, we are getting better and better! The second thing is You. Some of you I met for the first time and many of you I got to know better. I worked with you, laughed with you, puzzled things out with you, and consumed too many calories with you. At meetings, you were a sea of encouraging and smiling faces and I forgot to get nervous in front of you. So many of you volunteered for committees, hosted an Affaires d’Art, took on a task that needed doing, made a donation and/or attended an event. Your support fulfilled our purpose to promote the welfare of the Museum. Oftentimes, I would see one or more of you visiting our galleries, special exhibitions and museum-hosted events and it was good to know Stuart Society members were actively fulfilling our mission to participate in Museum activities. How could one not enjoy my position when I was surrounded by such a strong, committed group of leaders as I was? My fellow Officers, Board Members and Event, Standing, and Ad hoc Committee Chairs were enthusiastic, dedicated leaders who generously shared their time, skills and resources tirelessly with The Stuart Society for the benefit of the MFA. I was further inspired by the volunteer spirit found in each of the ladies featured in the Portraits article in this issue of The Scene. Each is a former President who has continued to serve The Stuart Society in many ways. Other former presidents have wonderfully done so as well; these ladies just took on significant responsibilities this year. At least twice recently, a relatively new member has pointed to one or another of them and said, “She’d make a good president” and I replied, “Yes, she would. Indeed, she was!” Two ladies I would like to mention by name are Carol Russell and Maggi McQueen. Carol preceded me as President. She taught me so much and continues to offer encouragement. Maggi follows me and we are in for a treat! She will be an amazing President! Thank you both! And thank you, Stuart Society Members, for all you do. I am a raving fan of yours! Thanks, as well, to everyone who attended and participated in Stuart Society events all year long! You make a difference! Warmly,

ART AT THE MFA Kristen Shepherd Director of the MFA DEPICTING A QUIET STREAM IN THE HUDSON RIVER VALLEY, Edward Gay’s Under the Birches captures the impression of a bright, beautiful summer day. Two children, framed by the boughs of a large birch tree, gather berries amidst a cluster of wild flowers. In the distance, a verdant clearing seemingly merges with the sunny, cloudless, sky above. An early example of Gay’s work, Under the Birches, typifies his fascination with the rural landscape. It is an idyllic composition which speaks to the integration of contemporary European practice in American landscape painting. Utilizing highly specific details, Gay created a work that seamlessly fuses the tenets of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in England with those of the Hudson River School. Gay, born in Ireland, but raised in Albany, New York, was well aware of the artistic practices occurring both at home and abroad. At a young age he began training with New York artists James Hart and George Boughton. He became a member of the National Academy of Design and traveled extensively throughout Europe in the 1880s and 1890s. These travels—coupled with his appreciation of the rural American landscape—became the focus of his painting. Under the Birches is a recent acquisition by the MFA, having been chosen at the Collectors Circle Choice Gala this past April. It complements other landscapes in the MFA’s collection including those by Asher B. Durand and George Inness.

Moscow by Amor Towles for my book club.
My favorite color is: blue.
Current SS position: Nominating Chair.
I’m obsessed with collecting: I like to collect art.
I was SS President in the year: 2005-2006.
My other favorite museum is: the Musee d’Orsay In Paris.
My favorite artist is: Claude Monet and Edgar Degas.
The last book I read was: A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. I highly recommend it!
Is the Mona Lisa under-, over- or rated about right? Rated just right for the compelling depth of her eyes and mysterious expression. Everyone must see it in person once, but it's not one I need to see again and again like other paintings I love.
Art I wish I could hang in my home: Monet's Water Lilies or Degas' Blue Dancers.
Is the Mona Lisa under-, over- or rated about right? I don’t think the Mona Lisa is overrated. I was surprised by the size of it the first time I saw it and while it’s not the most remarkable piece of art that I have seen, it draws thousands of people into the Louvre, which is a good thing.
My favorite color is: red and hot pink. I’m obsessed with collecting: I am not quite obsessed but I do like to collect Limoges boxes and Herend animals. My other favorite museum is: Musée d'Orsay or the Musée du Louvre. The last book I read was: Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline. Is the Mona Lisa under-, over- or rated about right? Over-rated. This summer, I plan to: relax and enjoy my two sets of grandchildren. My name: Glenn Mosby Current SS position: This year I served as Art in Bloom Reservations Chair. I was SS President in the year: 2010-2011. My favorite artist is: Dottie Walters. She was an artist who lived in Atlanta, GA. She was my neighbor when I was growing up, introduced me to art, and painted portraits of my three children. I have several paintings by her in my home. Art I wish I could hang in my home: a piece of art that belongs to a friend of mine. It is a 6
This summer, I plan to: go to Park City, Utah.
This summer, I plan to: do some golf getaways with my favorite golf partner, Ed, and I always am "up" for a spontaneous visit to NYC to see our 5-year-old granddaughter. My name: Chris Hilton Current SS position: Affaires Reservations Chair I was SS President in the year: 2009-2010.
My name: Margaret Amley
My favorite artist is: Vincent van Gogh.
Current SS position: My last job was Program Chair (with Past President Margaret Bowman) for the 2017 Art in Bloom 20th anniversary. I am happily a member of the audience at SS meetings without an official position. I was SS President in the year: 2012-2013. My favorite artist is: Hard to choose one but I love Auguste Renoir. A piece of art I wish I could hang in my home is: Renoir's Woman Reading. My favorite color is: peachy coral.
Art I wish I could hang in my home: Bedroom in Arles by Vincent van Gogh. My favorite color is: pink I’m obsessed with collecting: art, of course! My other favorite museum is: Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (Boston). The last book I read was: A Common Struggle by Patrick J. Kennedy and Stephen Fried. Is the Mona Lisa under-, over- or rated about right? Rated about right. This summer, I plan to: Move into our new condo at Tierra Verde in late May; enjoy an Alaskan cruise; and renew our wedding vows.
I’m obsessed with collecting: Golf ball markers from different courses and pretty golf shirts. My other favorite museum is: without a doubt The Frick Collection in NYC. The last book I read was: A Gentleman in S T U A R T S O C I E T Y. O R G • V O L U M E X X X I X , I S S U E 8 , M A Y 2 0 1 7

My favorite artist is: My grandmother Zinszer, she was a prolific painter, clay thrower, designed and handmade quilts and afghans, put a huge barn loom in the middle of her living room - she was a world traveler, collector of antiques, and never missed going to an art museum....large, small, in between. A piece of art I wish I could hang in my home is: I have a deep abiding love for our National Park Service and as an amateur photographer, I would love to have as a "visitor" to my wall, Ansel Adam's Clearing Winter Storm - Yosemite National Park.
