How do you prove the unprovable? Do we really need to try? This issue of UFO Encounter skirts along the edges of that conundrum, offering proofs to a world that is unwilling to care.

If you haven't already noticed, humanity operates on trust and faith -- we trust that the plane we've just strapped ourselves into can actually fly. We have faith that the governments of the world really have our best interests at heart (bah!). It seems we don't really want to know how the world actually works. What is life really about? Don't know, don't care. Where did we come from? Don't know, don't care. How does a television work? So long as the mind-numbing reality shows keeping coming, we don't care… Around the world billions of people pray to a bewildering array of deities, deities that can have no hope of being proven to exist -- let alone proving which deity is the 'right' deity. Perhaps people consider that UFO researchers are also worshiping at a shrine, that our god is a shiny metal disk.

Astronomers might need belief to keep their world in order, because until they can get a good close-up photo of a black hole, the existence of one is pure speculation. Geologists need to believe that the centre of the Earth is made of molten rock, because until they can dig their way down that far, they're working on blind faith. The world needs to believe that life doesn’t exist outside our planet, because that would mean we aren't that special, after all. And we are special. We really need to believe that…

AprIl- SeptemBer 2009 Chermside, April 25 2009, 9,00am

Forestdale (Logan Qld), July 21 2009, 00:57 am

On Anzac day of 2009, at around 9.0010.00pm, (can't quite remember) a friend and I where in a backyard in Chermside, Brisbane. We looked up to see a very large boomerang-shaped craft flying fairly high, well above the light patches of cloud. It made no sound at all and was flying a lot faster across the sky than a normal aircraft would. We later compared it with a normal plane's speed and size, and it confirmed that we saw something strange. It was a bit scary.

I happened to stare outside from my room for some reason, (I might call it a very brief nightwatch and I am a member of UFO Research Queensland Inc), and noticed a very bright white light. It seemed to be about 3-5mm in diameter, and was at a direction of NNE at a low angle. The height was much lower than commercial planes. There was no noise and no flashing lights. Then the light moved slowly upward for about 1cm and changed direction slightly to left and disappeared. It lasted for less than 10 seconds. I kept monitoring for about 30 seconds but never saw it again. The sky was clear. This was my second sighting in my life.

Alice Springs, July 15 2009, 6.00pm Around 6.00 pm on Wednesday evening, 15 July, myself and my girlfriend were riding our motorbike out of Alice Springs, heading south. We noticed a white shape, like a bright cloud, over in the westerly direction, toward the Pine Gap area. I joked and said "it must be visiting the Americans!!" We watched for about 15 minutes, we stopped and took two photographs with an 8 megapixel camera and a zoom lens. When we got home we zoomed in again and got some photos [below].

Paddington, July 23 2009, 12.20am I saw a very bright white/yellow light around a kilometre away from me at my home in Paddington Brisbane tonight at about 12:20am. It stayed still over the Auchenflower or Milton area for about 30 seconds, as I observed it from my balcony. It had rays of light shining from the main point and that weird red and blue colour

(the one you get in 3-D glasses) formed. It then started slowly moving to the west behind some trees and started coming towards me. It quickly came closer to me until it was about 100-200m away from the trees blocking my view and then most of its lights cut out. It then travelled SW behind the Rosalie Marist School hill. I could see a different shade of black around it (saucer?) and no constant flashing light like all planes and helicopters are supposed to have here aren't they?

Boodua (Qld), August 8 2009, 6.20pm On 8th August 2009 I was out in a paddock on a farm at Boodua, Queensland photographing an echidna. At approximately 6:20pm, while waiting for the echidna to move I glanced up at the stars. While looking near the Southern Cross a star of similar brightness to the major stars of the Southern Cross appeared to move. I steadied myself in case I was wobbling around but the star continued to move in an arc nearly around the top of the Southern cross (the left arm of the cross this night). The angle of the arc increased and as this occurred the 'star' dulled and then winked out of view. I would describe the movement as similar to using a compass to draw a circle. There was no apparent noise associated and no flashing lights. In total I may have seen it for all of ten seconds.

As my husband and I were sitting on our back steps, we saw a bright star like object moving at plane speed going from north to south. We watched it for several minutes as it passed over our house with no sound or flashing lights. All of a sudden it went dim and disappeared, which is the only reason my husband doesn't still think it's a helicopter.

Cloncurry (far west Qld), August 9 2009

Nerang (Gold Coast), August 10 2009, 7.23pm

I would like to make a report on a light that has been in the sky since the 9 August 2009 north west of Cloncurry. The night 9 August, a light of flashing red and green lights was on the horizon, below the stars. It dropped vertically down very suddenly and stopped, and still the lights were flashing. It was very clear. It was doing a north-south east-west movement, for a time of about one minute, in which it appeared to be like two lights together going around each other. Myself and a friend were watching it, from a house in Cloncurry and kept watching it till 3.30 am. The light slowly moved to the left vertically upwards. Every half an hour it would move further vertically and stop for half an hour. Each night it appeared further away from where we watching. It always appeared in the same area every night but further away. I phoned the weather station in Mount Isa and they were not able to pinpoint what it was. They suggested it may be a light from the mines or an army activity. The lights we saw were very clear and bright on the first night. Every night it has appeared doing the same configurations, but further away. On the 25th of August, myself and three witnesses saw the light moving to the left from a motel in Cloncurry. Steady but slow, and on a horizontal position on the horizon.

I observed a number of orange-red UFOs to the west. They didn't move much at all but faded to darkness one at a time over a period of less than a minute.

be the Southern Cross. At the very moment he said this they moved and changed formation to then appear as two lines of three objects each as in this diagram:

Forestdale, August 13 2009, 10.03pm I was putting a rubbish bin on the kerbside for collection when I saw an orange light (about 1-2mm in diameter) in the north east. It was visible for less than 10 seconds, so I could not manage to record (video camera) it on my mobile phone. At the same time there was a small airplane, very possibly from Archerfield airport, flying near over the house, so there may be another report on this issue.

Cairns, August 24 2009, 7.00pm We live in Cairns North Queensland, and at about 7.00pm on Monday 24th August 2009, my husband and I were sitting eating dinner with our family when the phone rang. It was our neighbour, who told us to quickly go outside and have a look up in the sky. My husband ran out and then yelled back at us all to come and see. What I witnessed as well as about ten others in the neighbourhood were six star-like lights in the sky that were bigger and brighter than Venus. They appeared in a pattern like that of a hexagon, and my father stated that he thought it might

RICHARD JONES

Australian Police UFO Disclosure Project

With a background in computers, an interest in the paranormal, and a job that has him working closely with the police, the birth of the Police UFO database project by Brisbane man Richard Jones seemed almost inevitable. His work on this project began in early 2007 when he suspected that if there were UFOs, police officers might have a higher chance of seeing them on the job. He was right. While creating this unprecedented database of UFO reports from Australian police officers, Richard found it to be just the tip of the iceberg. He has also compiled a collection of police UFO investigation cases exposing that the police have been quietly investigating UFOs since the 1950s. Police are more than just UFO witnesses - they feature as a massive UFO data collection force. Consequently, it's only fitting that Police officers all over the world are becoming stars in the UFO disclosure process, pressuring those inthe-know to come clean for the benefit of humanity. Indeed police officers are becoming a very important part of this process and their testimony holds particular weight as high-calibre observers. It's natural for law enforcement agencies to solve mysteries. Now, they can help solve what may be one of the greatest mysteries of all time

Over a period of approximately 25 to 30 minutes, we watched each of these objects continue to change formation, moving sometimes with extreme speed and then other times slower, but at the same time faster than any aircraft we have ever seen. No noise was emitted from these objects. Most of the time they moved in pairs but as a team of six. One appeared to be a little lighter and at one point this object appeared to move up to the top object and almost merge. They also appeared too far into the atmosphere to be an aircraft or space junk, simply because they looked as though they were putting on a show for us. We called the

Air force, the Navy, the police and the local airport to see if there was anything unusual occurring at this time, and were told there was nothing on radar. We are at a loss to be sure about what these six lights that seemed to mimic stars actually were, and wonder has anyone else seen such an event recently

Tallebudgera (Gold Coast Hinterland), August 29 2009, 7.15pm I live right up the back of Tallebudgera Valley on the side of a mountain. About two hundred metres further up from us the road ends in a dead end, a horseshoe shape of towering cliffs. Around 7.15pm on Saturday 29th, I looked out the back windows that face the cliffs, and noticed a really bright light coming over the top of the mountain from the south. We often have planes flying around as Coolangatta airport is not very far away, though we don't usually see planes coming over from the south. I immediately thought it was a plane or helicopter, but then noticed it had none of the blinking lights they have. I opened the window to see if I could hear it, but could hear nothing. It seemed to be travelling in my direction, so ran downstairs and outside to see if I could see what it was or if I could hear it once I was out there. I noticed that the closer it got to me, the smaller and fainter it seemed to get, then realized it wasn't that it was getting closer,

it was going straight up. I watched it for probably 30 seconds -- it wasn't fast, just steady, until it just seemed to change from a bright white light to a red glow, then it completely disappeared. My husband came outside and we sat there for about half an hour - we saw two satellites and a shooting star, none of which resembled what I had seen. We discussed all the things we thought it could have been -- he suggested a flare, but it wasn't fast, just a steady speed. It didn't go up then come down, it wasn't a plane, no blinking lights at all, not a satellite, too close, too big and too bright, it was just as bright and big as Jupiter is at the moment, but moving, and as I said, went straight up until it disappeared.

Surfers Paradise (Gold Coast), September 5 2009, 9.00am This morning (Saturday) around 9.00am, an usual object was seen flying directly out to sea from Surfers Paradise. I put the binoculars on it and it had a silvery side and a dark side it almost resembled a chair.

Elliminyt (Vic), September 9 2009, 10.25pm I wish to report a UFO sighting at about 10.25pm in the SSE sky at Elliminyt, near Colac Victoria. This is not the first time I have seen this. One night last summer I also saw the same thing. It was a very bright light in the sky, which moved around, up, down and sideways. It changed colours from blue to red and

white. I didn't take a photo, it was so far away I don't know that it would show as anything but a bright light anyway, but it had my attention for a good 15 minutes, I went inside so I don't know how long it stayed around.

Gympie, (Qld), 2008 (reported September 2009) It was Summer 2008 and I was lying outside on a the ground watching the sunset and talking to my girlfriend when I saw a bright light appear on the horizon. I took no interest in this light until it began to move straight up into the sky. I followed with my eyes in amazement as I watched this bright light start at the horizon and then shoot straight up into the sky, disappearing within 20 seconds. Still no one believes me to this day that I saw a UFO.

Moreton Bay, November 2002 (reported August 2009), 2.00am At the time there was no wind, no moon, balmy, and a storm was slowly approaching from the south. I was drift fishing alone when I observed a huge metallic disc [at least two kilometres in diameter], moving from south to north at about 20 knots. It produced a low buzzing noise and I estimate its height at around 1000 metres. I watched for 30 minutes as the craft moved overhead and north towards Bribie Island. It displayed twelve bright red lights in four triangles underneath. I will gladly swear this is true AWESOME.............

ufO encounter

the story of From 1992 until 2002, I had what I've heard called recurring dreams. I started having strange dreams about the same place. A large area, dotted with strange buildings. The dreams were all similar in how they began. I'd get out of bed, go outside, and meet a non-human being, then get into a UFO. It would take me, and other people, to the 'area' with the strange buildings. From this point onwards, once arrived, no two dreams were the same. When these dreams started, it was a novelty, a mystery. They were so realistic, so vivid, I began writing them down. I started a dream diary. After months, then years, these 'dreams' became a little more than disturbing. I still had 'normal', random dreams, but also had hundreds of the recurring dreams. I can draw, and I did many sketches of the 'area'. I eventually filled more than three exercise books. I have tried to make sense of these strange dreams. I felt a little overwhelmed and sought professional help. I was informed I have a 'sleep disorder', and that I'm 'a bit serious'. I was tested, for chemical imbalance mis-fires of the brain, epilepsy, brain damage, psychosis of some type, and whether I felt 'special' because I had these dreams. Three events came before the dreams. The first two I have heard called missing time. Both of these times I was in Cairns, Queensland. Both times there was myself and three other people present. The first time myself and three friends stopped on the way home from town in Martin Munroe park, near a raised platform there. We all recall nothing after that until waking up in our beds at home. The second time, three friends and I stopped at the channel bridge at the end of Mann Street, around 6.00pm. The next memory we all have is of three hours later, in a park nearby, and we were all not feeling well. Like the first time, after a short discussion about it, we dismissed it. Then in September 1991, myself and my girlfriend at the time went for a walk into the bush at Perseverance Dam (near Esk) in south Queensland. We stepped off the track we had been on, and our next memories are of us standing in a small clearing on a hillside, near to the track we had been on. Very strange sensations left us both feeling sick and drained. This was another episode of missing time, but the difference was that this time I remembered what had happened. Very,

ufO encounter

very strange memories that I could not in fact admit had happened. For many years I could not accept the memory of what I had seen. I remembered that when we stepped off the track at Perseverance, a strange thing happened. A very loud noise, which seemed to penetrate the body, came from somewhere, and suddenly I couldn't move. Before my eyes, a strangely shaped UFO silently descended, to stop just above the ground. As unrealistic as it seemed, this happened right before my eyes. What was far worse than this unbelievable thing was that I knew what was happening. The moment I saw the UFO I recognised it. I knew it, because I had seen it descend exactly the same way previously. As all this clashed in my head, I suddenly became aware that a figure was standing very close to me, just within my peripheral vision. If I could've flinched, I would've, as it raised its arm and pointed something at my right temple. My vision immediately blurred into red and black, and a large painful buzzing filled my head. I was still semi-aware, but my vision was affected, so I could barely see. I felt no movement, but through my swimming vision saw I was inside the UFO. There were other people lying down across from me. I could see out through the walls of the UFO, like it was tinted glass. Again with no feeling of motion I saw it was moving. After how long I couldn't say, a small speck in the distance grew into a massive seed-shaped UFO, floating in space, dull grey, no features. I remember only thinking 'a city of rooms in the air'. The next thing I knew, I woke up, standing in the middle of the bush. I couldn't move, and I started to panic. Suddenly I could move, and I almost fell as I staggered, my head spinning. I looked around, and saw my girlfriend standing behind me, her eyes wide and unseeing, like in a trance. I tried to speak but was still pretty dazed, and could hardly hear my

S

own voice. She didn't respond. I put my hand on her arm and she suddenly gasped and almost fell, now awake, looking around bewildered. She said, "I feel really weird." Touching her arm I could feel her pulse racing like mine was, and it suddenly hit me what had happened. I looked around and the UFO was gone. I grabbed her hand, almost pulling her behind me, and we went back along the track we'd come down. My girlfriend became very upset, but didn't recall anything at all. Both of our eyes turned green overnight, and stayed bright green, for about three months. A year after this, the 'dreams' started. But to me, what was more disturbing than vividly realistic dreams about a bizarre place, was how sometimes I 'woke-up' in them. I had been having the dreams for three months when this happened. I had 'wokenup' in the dreams before this, but none had been so disturbing. After being taken to the 'area' in this particular dream, I had entered a large building and was passing through one room into another, in a line of people. My vision was drawn to my right by the sound of running water. I saw the far end of the room open into a ribbed tunnel, angling down. I 'woke-up', because I recognised the tunnel. The line of people kept walking, and buffeted me aside, out of line. I recall walking towards the tunnel's mouth. As I stared down that tunnel, with a shock, I realised I knew it. I remembered that I had gone down it, knew where it led, and had been down it many times, the first time as far back as three years earlier. This element was the hardest for me to accept. I seemed to have memories of a place that couldn't possibly be real. The dream had been so realistic that I had doubted I was dreaming, but knew I had to be. My support base was very small, and I couldn't bring myself to speak about it for a long time. Now I find it easier.

BURRAGORANG VALLEY UNDERGROUND BASE INVESTIGATION Rex Gilroy

On the night of Friday 17th April, 2009, Heather and I, together with William Johnson and Kim and Ian Tracton, drove out in darkness to McMahon’s Lookout, which gives a commanding view of the Burragorang Valley and the northern offshoot of Lake Burragorang [ie the backwaters of Warragamba Dam]. After arriving at the lookout around 8.00pm it was not long before we were to witness incredible happenings in the valley below us. The time was 8.30pm when, after seeing a dense mist and cloud cover was obscuring the underground base area, our attention was drawn to a single, round white glow coming from beneath

the surface of the lake, close to the northern shoreline of the backwaters below us. As we watched the object my binoculars caught sight of a glow emanating from the north-east corner of the shoreline below us, which coming from a Cliffside, lit up tree trunks on their eastern side, penetrating out into the lake to shine over the circular object glowing beneath the surface. This glow from the cliff base [an obvious underground base opening] gradually faded away, leaving the glowing disc-shaped object, which continued glowing beneath the lake surface. This glow would at times vary in intensity.

Then, at 9.33pm, two more disc-shaped objects, both white-glowing, appeared to fade into view on the west side of the first disc to form a straight east-west alignment. At this point also, each object was suddenly linked to the north shore by white-glowing underwater light shafts, then another underwater beam, glowing from the cliff base at the north-east corner of the lake linked all three objects. These connecting light rays faded away after about 20 minutes. As we continued watching this light display, at 10.11pm the three glowing discs, all continuing to vary in intensity, appeared to me to be submerged saucer craft and we all discussed this possibility.

[above: daytime photo of the valley]

[above: A glowing disc came into view just off the western shore of this promontory where it glowed for a time before fading away. Was it the same single disc that moved across the lake, or another one? ]

ufO encounter

Then at 10.33pm the discs on the west side of the first observed one began to fade away, soon leaving the first [east end] disc to continue glowing alone. This disc’s glow periodically faded then brightened alternatively. At 10.45pm this single glowing disc began moving slowly southwards, eventually to stop at a point roughly in the middle of this extension of the lake continuing to alternatively fade and brighten. It then eventually completely faded away. Then, at 11.26pm what may or may not have been the same disc, suddenly glowed into view close to the western shore of the lake, where it continued to do so until 11.45pm when it too faded away. It was also about this time that I spotted a goldglowing light, which had appeared from

behind the mist and clouds covering the western side of the valley where the underground base main saucer openings are located. Directing the others to this object, we watched as it continued east out of sight, our view obstructed by the nearby forest. Was it an ordinary light aircraft, or something from the ‘base’? In any case we abandoned our Skywatch, which had in fact been a ‘lake watch’, excited at what we had been witness to. ***** So what can be the explanation of the three glowing underwater saucershaped objects? I maintain they were flying craft, perhaps involved in some underwater manoeuvres.

It would appear that the lake waters are being employed as underwater ‘flying saucer nests, probably for underwater movement and also takeoffs, and even underwater landings. It is a point of interest that, over the years, at least from the Warragamba Dam end, people have reported having seen ‘saucers’ emerge from the lake to fly off into the sky, thus suggesting that underwater activities involving flying saucers from the great Burragorang underground advanced spaced travel technology base, have been going on for a great many years, and that we were very lucky to have been on hand at the right time and location to witness some of these activities.

[above right: Close view of the north-east corner of the section of lake where the three 'saucers' at one point were connected to the northern shore by light shafts, with another extending through them from the north-east shore, where another light was shining out from a cliff base opening.] [above left: Following the disappearance of the two glowing discs on the west side of the first one to appear, this saucer began moving beneath the water to the centre of this section of the lake, where it afterwards vanished.]

Royal New Zealand Air Force Officer

1974 UFO SIGHTING In recent years I have been fortunate enough to learn of UFO sightings by a former RAF wing Commander and an RAF Flight Lieutenant. But in l994 while I was with the British UFO Research Association (BUFORA) a sighting landed on my desk from an officer in the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF). It referred to an incident in l974. The officer’s name was Anthony Chatfield, from Renwick Marlborough in New Zealand, and his account in full appears here for the very first time: In January 1974 I was an instructor of recruits in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Early in that month I was on duty at night and was in charge of what was then the Airman Cadet School (now known as the General Service Training School). Two new flights of recruits had arrived earlier that day and, as with a large number of young people away from home for the first time, excitement was high and sleep was hard to come by for those young people. As a result a lot of my time that night was spent patrolling the various barrack blocks and dormitories getting these young people into bed and making them stay there. This was akin to one of the seven labours of Hercules. After about 5 or 6 attempts to maintain some sort of order I decided to get the whole lot of them outside and give them a chance to burn off their excess energy by having them running around the weapon training area. This was simply a patch of grass about 100 meters by 200 meters adjacent to the barrack block the recruits were domiciled in. I had the whole 60 or so running around the outer perimeter of the weapons training area. It was a fine warm night with a stiffish sort of breeze which made it a pleasant night for a gently jog. After about 10 minutes or so one recruit approached me and asked me what it was that was flying along the top of the hills immediately to our north. This is a range of hills called the Richmond Range, and vary in height from about 1,500 feet to 4,500 feet. The distance from RNZAF Woodbourne to the UFO was about 6 to 7 kilometres. but even at that range it was pretty big. There was no sound and the object was travelling on a southwesterly direction at, I guess, around 200250 miles per hour. The best way I can describe the object is that it reminded me

10

of an old fashioned barbell of the type that circus strongmen used in days gone by. There were 2 large globes glowing with the same sort of light one sees from a fluorescent light, and they seemed to be joined together by a gold glowing bar. The light seemed to come from within and one

Philip Mantle © find no logical explanation as to what the object was that I and 60 or so cadets saw. I know full well that the RNZAF had nothing even close to the size of the beast that I saw. At that time the biggest aircraft that the RNZAF possessed was the C130 Hercules, and the big ‘Jumbos’ of Air New Zealand never came down here as the runway at Woodbourne is too short. In any event a ‘Jumbo’ would not have been flying that low at night without having a lot of hysterical passengers on board without someone hearing about it. I saw this thing at a distance of some 7 kilometres, which is slightly less than four and a half miles, and with the weather conditions prevailing at that time I am cast iron certain as to what I saw.

globe seemed to be smaller that the other, although this could have been due to the angle it was viewed from. The weather conditions at the time were as follows: low broken cloud with a large area of clear sky with a light to strong northwesterly breeze. Visibility was excellent. The object was in view for about 3 minutes, and when it passed behind a cloud the light from the object could be seen showing through. I feel I must mention that I spent a good deal of my life working in and around aircraft having served for 5 years in the RAF as an airframe mechanic. I worked on all kinds of aircraft including Spitfires, Hurricanes and Ansons, and this craft went against all the rules of aerodynamics that I was privy to. It had no lifting surfaces, like mainplanes, that I could see. No rudder or fin, no navigation lights and no flashing strobe light. Friends have suggested that it might have been a ‘lost’ weather balloon, but this is complete nonsense. Weather balloons do not glow and they do not fly against the wind. This thing was also huge. There was a moon and the night was quite bright. The time of the sighting was around 23.30, and although I enjoy a drink I was not allowed to drink whilst on duty and I was stone cold sober. As I have stated I have spent a lot of time working in and around aircraft and I can

I contacted Mr. Chatfield and asked him for permission to use his real name if I published the account, to which he was more than happy to agree. This is a truly fascinating account from a very experienced member of the armed forces. There is however an interesting postscript to this account. I had another letter from the witness and he provided a rather interesting piece of information: A brief thought concerning my last letter was that about 3 or 4 months later, when I was discussing the sighting with a colleague, I went and got the ‘Incident Book’ that all duty NCOs have to fill in on completion of their tour of duty. I was surprised to discover that the page on which I had recoded the sighting had been removed. I asked about this but no one could throw and light on the matter at all. The page had not been ripped out or torn but quite neatly cut. What happened to that page I simply do not know. It was shortly after this that I discovered that the Civil Aviation Authority has a printed form issued to all Air Traffic Control Centers throughout New Zealand specifically for UFO sightings. Food for thought don’t you think? Food for thought indeed. I think it is fair to say that when someone of this witnesses experience reports such a sighting that it deserves serious attention. Despite the best efforts of the debunkers there are some UFO sightings that simply cannot be explained and this one I feel falls firmly into that category. COSMOS UNDER FIRE!

Sheryl Gottschall

The August/September 2009 issue of Cosmos Magazine (issue 28) devoted 21 pages to a special feature entitled "Mass Delusions" which among other things claimed to "explore delusional behaviour, from the global financial crisis to alien abductions" and claimed to explain that it is the way our brains are wired that causes "some people to believe in UFOs, apparitions and homeopathy". The opening sentence of the feature began with the question "why do people believe in phenomena such as UFOs, alien abductions, psychic surgery and ghosts, when the evidence is so scant and unconvincing?" What?! The evidence may be unconvincing to some - but SCANT? I think not. Obviously Wilson de Silva, editor provocateur, is living under a mushroom. Scant evidence of the UFO phenomenon? He's got to be kidding. The article goes on to infer that we're all suffering from collective delusions complete with "false or exaggerated beliefs that arise spontaneously, spread rapidly in a population, and temporarily affect a region, culture or whole nation." This mass hysteria, which apparently we suffer from, contains many factors that "contribute to the rise and spread of such collective delusions, such as rumors, extraordinary public anxiety or excitement, shared cultural beliefs or stereotypes, and amplification of these by the mass media, as well as reinforcing actions by authorities such as politicians, the police or the military." Huh? But wait - there's more. Carl Sagan, now deceased born again UFO supporter turned skeptic (no he hasn't reincarnated), is quoted as saying that "the scientific method and the clarity it brings can help us overcome our fuzzy thinking.Thinking critically and clearly," he says, "is the means‌by which deep thoughts can be winnowed from deep nonsense." The article goes on to quote Sagan as arguing "it is far better to grasp the universe as it really is, than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring." Well right back at you Carl. Next in de Silva's list of quotees is retired stage magician, skeptic and founding member of CSICOP, James Randi, who states "that real science searches for the truth through rigorous methods; it strives to leave no questions unanswered; it provides solid evidence any other researcher can reproduce. Criticism and questioning is encouraged and constantly leads to an evolution of science in the face of new evidence." (cough, splutter) Who can disagree with that, if it actually ever occurred. All I ask is that people like Randi and his skeptical following stand in front of a mirror when they spout such insights. But is the real argument here whether science, and inevitably scientists, are doing what they proclaim, or is the real issue about

ufO encounter

the psychology of those with different perspectives not being able to escape the instinctual need to harass, debunk, bully and inevitably ostracize people in the UFO community who think differently and challenge their rusty herd mentality? To explore this, let's ask ourselves how a skeptic might handle a claim about UFOs from a magician. What if the UFO community held up an opinion from such a person to support an argument for the reality of UFOs? Don't you think they might ask how the opinion of a stage magician claiming to be a "scientific investigator who exposes the falsities of pseudoscience" (see www.randi.org) can be offered to shed

light on anything of a paranormal nature? I think they would. No strike that. I KNOW they would and they'd scoff loudly in the face of those who entertained such "silliness and delusion". Meanwhile, back in the real world, it seems de Silva remains unaware of credible witness testimony when it comes to the UFO phenomenon, although he does present a mascot photo of Edgar Mitchell with the caption "Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell has claimed there is a US government cover-up about alien visitations" but that's as far as he appears willing to go in debunking a witness who holds three science degrees, one of which is a PhD, plus four honorary degrees in engineering (see www.edmitchellapollo 14.com/edmbio.htm). Perhaps if Dr Mitchell had a background in magic, de Silva might go further. The feature goes on to include the debunking of Crop Circles, stating, "it's hard enough to conceive why intergalactic aliens would opt to write in grain fields rather than public parks or on a piece of paper." This is where Randi chimes in with his thoughts that, "the irrefutable evidence, of course, is that crop circles are hoaxes, perpetrated by pranksters, artists and children." Predictably, Randi points to "the adventures of Doug Bower and Dave

Chorley, who came forward in the early 1990s to admit they were behind the original crop circles that kicked off the craze in Britain." He seems to have conveniently forgotten that the crop circle phenomenon came to public attention in the 1970s, and botanical documents containing descriptions of such formations date back to the 1800s. This only covers the English speaking world so we have no idea how long such things may have existed in locations like China, South America or Africa. It goes without saying that obviously hoaxes exist. We also know that teams of people will go out into the fields and create this land-art for reasons not associated to hoaxing per-se. Whatever the driving force there seems to be a phenomenon within the phenomenon that makes us want to talk to each other in this manner. Now THAT'S weird! But I digress. Apparently getting a skeptic to look at the evidence for genuine formations is a hard act to fulfill as David Guest, plant pathologist and agricultural scientist at the University of Sydney, proclaims there is no documented evidence to be found anywhere. Has Guest actually asked for this documentation or merely made a flying visit to the website of BLT Research in Massachussetts, the worlds largest crop circle site, that uses scientific methods to test plant samples. My guess is it was a quick visit followed by a declaration of debunking. Honestly, after reading this feature, which also explores the so-called "delusional" results of homeopathy and chiropractic manipulation, one wonders how long this magazine will remain in circulation when its contents fly in the face of the public who are living better lives because of these modalities. Cosmos is obviously written by skeptics with a cause -- or is it a vendetta? Either way skeptics need to realize that it is THEY who are the minority group here. As they have clearly demonstrated through their own behaviour, their fragile psyches would be the first to crumble into a jibbering heap if ET did make open contact. I don't know if they realize it but from my perspective skeptics appear to be stuck and unwilling to move forward in this great learning curve we call life. Their behaviour is dishonest, uncivil, discourteous, unhelpful and invalidating to others. The skeptical approach aims to destroy the social bonds that naturally form when we behave in the opposite manner. It's as if they subconsciously realize this and lash out at others as a form of compensation. If they were honest enough to look deeply within themselves they might realize it is they who have isolated themselves from the greater tribe of humanity. In their effort to ostracize others through their condescending behavior they have actually ostracized themselves, and inevitably suffer the consequences of their invalidation. Ultimately they have become their own victims.

IS THE "SMOKING GUN" OF ALIEN RESEARCH IN HAND? Dan McWilliams Š Today the field of UFO/alien research is little different from the imaginary world of Harry Potter. A small minority of "wizards" accept at least the possibility, if not the reality, of otherworldly existence. Wizards are opposed by a vast majority of "muggles" with attitudes about the unknown or unacceptable that range from vapid disinterest to seething outrage. The middle ground is a contentious war zone because both sides lack definitive proof of their position. Wizards have countless examples of "almost" solid proof, while muggles insist that "extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof." Well, guess what? The required extraordinary proof is now claimed to be a proverbial "smoking gun" in the hands of researcher Lloyd Pye, a wizard wellknown to fans around the world from many appearances on television shows and radio interviews. Pye presents his extraordinary claims and defends them in a new eBook called "The Starchild Skull Essentials." "I've been collecting information about the Starchild skull for ten years now," Pye explains. "Piece by piece from here and there, never actually seeing it as a congealed whole. But when I sat down to write this new eBook, gathering it all together into one tight knot just blew me away. I realized as never before how incredibly powerful the totality of it is. It actually establishes 'proof' that the Starchild could not possibly have been a human deformity. It really is the 'smoking gun' of UFO and alien research." Pye's report of extraordinary evidence to support his extraordinary claim is certain to be fighting words for the mass of muggles who tend to attack the credibility of anyone who challenges their reigning paradigms, so Pye knows his assertions will be met head-on. "Oh, sure, scientists and other defenders of the mainstream faith will balk at first," Pye acknowledges. "But this time they have no leg to stand on. This time they lose, we win." His assurance stems from the fact that genetics is at the heart of his proof. "DNA analysis is utterly precise," he explains, "as precise as math. In fact,

12

genetics is the mathematics of biology. It leaves absolutely no room for argument by anyone. If 50 people say a person committed a crime and DNA says they didn't, they'll walk. That's the power of genetics, to provide us with the amazing proof we can now unleash on an unsuspecting world." Admittedly, the mass of photographic evidence in Pye's eBook can appear overwhelming to untrained eyes because it all seems so convincing. "It's convincing because it's real," he insists. "There is no smoke and mirrors here, no photoshopping, nothing but unaltered photo after photo after photo proving again and again exactly how far away the Starchild skull was from normal humans. Taken as a whole, stacked up like cordwood, these facts can be intimidating, but they are also undeniable. I guarantee they are."

Pye's claim of proof of at least one alien being living and dying on earth 900 years ago is as extraordinary as they come, but he is surprisingly sanguine about it. "I've known since 2003, when a primer-based DNA test was performed on the Starchild's DNA. That test established that it had a human mother and a non-human father, but in 2003 we couldn't prove how far away the father was from a normal human. Without that evidence we were hamstrung, unable to make any definitive claims about it. Now, though, all of that has changed. Now we have a test that can prove our case beyond any scientific doubt."

That test is an extremely sophisticated DNA analysis technique pioneered by 454 Life Sciences of Branford, Connecticut. It permits the recovery of an entire genome, which is all of the DNA strands of a living being. In humans that is roughly 3.0 billion base pairs. "What we'll do," Pye explains, "is compare every base pair in the Starchild's DNA with those in humans, chimps, gorillas, and even Neanderthals, which are nearly sequenced right now. When we can do that, we'll be able to show as precisely as a mathematical formula exactly how far away the Starchild's DNA is from all of the others." How far does Pye expect the Starchild's DNA to stray from normal humans? His answer is blunt and volatile. "It can't be anywhere near humans. Chimps are 3% different, while gorillas are 5%. Neanderthals could be anywhere between chimps and humans. Yet when you see the evidence of Starchild differences stacked up like cordwood in the new eBook, you realize it has to surpass a gorilla! The Starchild is not even close to being human." This statement seems impossible because the Starchild's DNA proves it had a human mother, but Pye has a surprising answer for that. "Most people think hybrids have to be the result of a sexual union. That's not true. Sophisticated genetic engineering can create a being with alien nuclear DNAtransplanted into a human female egg, and the resulting being would have human mitochondrial DNA from its mother and nuclear DNA from either an alien father, or even a pair of alien parents. In genetics anything is possible." Is Lloyd Pye correct in making his extraordinary claims? Does he have the requisite extraordinary proof? He says he does and he says it is available for anyone to evaluate in his new eBook, "Starchild Skull Essentials." If anyone is inclined to take him up on his challenge, he offers a free sample at http:/ /www.starchildproject.com/starchild _ebook.htm. INVESTIGATION FRUSTRATION

The James Ward UFO Photograph Philip Mantle

Most UFO investigators will tell you that being involved in this subject often involves long periods of boredom before something ‘interesting’ grabs your attention. UFO sightings, despite what the tabloid media might have you believe, are not reported by every drunk that staggers home from the pub at night. UFO investigators can wait for a long time before something worth investigating comes their way. More often than not most UFO sightings can be explained rather quickly, but when that occasion does arise when you potentially have something worth dragging yourself away from the TV for, it can also be most frustrating. This applies to an alleged UFO photograph taken by James Ward. I live just outside of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, and my local newspaper is the Wakefield Express. On page 15 of their edition dated Friday January 9th 2009, ran the headline ‘WAS THIS A UFO HOVERING OVER US?’ It went on to say that a mysterious object was spotted over Kirkthorpe Common. A shocked nature enthusiast by the name of James Ward snapped what he thought was a flying saucer. Mr Ward is quoted as saying “It seemed to hover for a few minutes, and then sped off. I was very shocked and surprised. It was a saucer shape and very metallic and had no lights.” The photograph was reproduced in colour in the newspaper along with a request for readers to contact them if they had seen anything themselves. I contacted the Wakefield Express and they reluctantly supplied me with an email address for the photographer, James Ward. It wasn’t long before I sent Mr Ward an email requesting further information and he responded in brief: “Hi Philip. I will give you the full statement of what I saw. It was about 3.30pm, just finished taking photos and as I was turning to my right I saw an object hovering above the tree line, At the time I was shocked because I could not hear anything coming from the object and it was silent and if I wouldn’t of [sic] turned around at the time I wouldn’t of [sic] seen it. The object was saucer shaped very shiny with no markings. It hovered there for a short time and then it sped upwards. I felt very sickly and lots of static on my

ufO encounter

clothing. That’s all I really can tell you. Hope that’s ok....thanks. James Ward.” Brief, but to the point. Mr Ward gave me his permission to reproduce his photograph and we planned to meet up, visit the location where the photograph was taken and conduct an interview. In the meantime Mr Ward gave me his address and I wrote to him and supplied him with a UFO sighting report form in order to gather a few more details. On the form in question, which was promptly completed and returned, the date the alleged UFO photograph was taken is given as Wednesday January 7th 2009 at 3.30pm. The sighting is said to have lasted for ten minutes and there was an unusual ‘static electric’ smell associated with the sighting. Another brief description of the sighting is given by Mr Ward which is reproduced here in full: “I was walking and taking photos of wildlife when I turned to my right to take a shot of an open field and the tree line, and there was a silver metallic object hovering

©

above the tree line about 100m (metres) from where I was stood. The object looked like an upturned silver plate, about the size of a small car and no sound. The object stayed in its place above the woodland for 10 mins and then shot upwards very fast. Afterwards I felt sick and there was a lot of static electricity and time seemed to fly. Afterwards I have been getting weird dreams and headaches. I have visited the site afterwards and seen nothing unusual” The camera used was a Kodak easy share 5 megapixel. And the weather was reported as being still, cold and dry. This is now where the frustration comes in. Despite promises from Mr Ward to meet up and allow an interview, this has not happened. My last email to him was returned. So, in his absence I turned to photographic image analyst Winston Keech. Mr Keech’s credentials in this field are: he is a BSc systems design CNAA MCI (microelectronics, computing and instrumentation) -- this has formal

modules in optics, information theory, data and signal processing — engineering technologist/specialist, engineer Rolls Royce, advanced mech tech military/civil ... specialist in stress design and computer modeling. Systems analyst IBM. Audio/Video signal processing system development programmer (CTO) Darknoise Technologies ltd. (cd/dvd protection and A/V recording spoiler technology). “ This is what he had to say about the Ward UFO photograph: “I’ve spent a couple of hours on the photo for you and here are my initial findings: “It appears to be a genuine photograph, judging by the filename schema and resolution it is most likely taken on a Samsung mobile phone or Samsung pocket camera. As the depth of field is wide and the resolution low (1megapix) this would suggest a small aperture/high F number lens. As there is no exit data with the image file, this is all I can surmise. Because the background trees are slightly out of focus, whereas the mid frame trees are in sharp focus, this would imply that this camera had auto/ manual focus, which most mobile phones do not have. So, whereas the resolution/performance is consistent with a mobile phone, the focus indicates that this may be either a high range mobile or a small lensed compact pocket camera. The lack of significant high contrast fringing would indicate that this is (for the predicted camera type) operated at no or small to moderate zoom. The lack of exit data is more normal for a mobile phone though. Starting with the original photograph that has increased red and

green channel levels, a stage 1 focus enhancement, raised gamma and moderate contrast enhancement ... to bring out hidden detail and give a more natural view: Analysis of noise distribution would indicate that the object/craft feature is a real object in the image -- it is unlikely to have been added digitally. Not knowing the point at which the shot was taken, it cannot be determined that this is not a reflection or total internal reflection in any transmissive sheet/screen between camera and object. However, because the relative focus accuracy is similar to a point at or some short way beyond the foreground trees, I feel reflection can be ruled out. High gamma and differential edge detection show no signs of any supporting wires - although it must be stated that the high sky backlighting level could easily prevent the camera detecting thin wires. All I can definitively say is that there is no evidence in the actual photo. “So, it seems to be a real photograph, of something, apparently taken at dusk causing the camera white balance to over saturate the blue channel. “Object size: Using the clear focus range as an estimate of its distance from the camera, it seems that the object is somewhere near the foreground tree line and no more than twice the camera to foreground tree distance. As the tree would appear to be approx 60ft in width, and occupies 213 pixels width of the image versus the object, which takes up 32 pixels width, then the object is roughly 32/213 x 60ft which implies a width of 9.0 ft ... if at the furthest extent of that level of focus accuracy ... at the midrange trees horizontally, then this would make the object (by similar estimate) 32/48 x 60ft wide = 40ft wide. Without any point

14

for triangulation or identifiable details seen behind the object, this is the best estimate. The height to width ratio of the object is 14/32 by pixel measurement. “Close up detail of the object: (wakegray6wavegammahi.bmp, below left) is a zoomed crop of the object. The image has been converted to greyscale (to reduce colour noise and increase tone definition) it has then had differential sharpness optimised by a 6 level polygonal wave filter algorithm to help clarify detail. The gamma level has then been increased for further contrast clarity. This would seem to show a triangular shaped object with a significant edge detail and dark feature at each corner. Although somewhat blimp shaped, there seems no evidence of an underslung basket. The object displays no blurring of details, which would imply that it was stationary when photographed. The slight fringing against a relatively bright sky background would imply that it is of reasonable contrast ratio with the sky and possibly slightly lustrous. ”(wake6wavegammahi.bmp) is the same image in colour with rgb colour level adjustment. This shows the same edge detail and triangular shape, along with a circular feature at the centre of the triangular section.... I hate to say this, but it looks very much like artist impressions of the tr3-b astra. Philip, this is all I can get out of one photograph with limited resolution and no other technical details. I hope this was of use - hopefully some of this may make sense against the witness statement. Win Keech”. Win Keech seems to be confirming in his analysis that we are not dealing here with a frisbee or a car hubcap but something quite large. Could this photograph be the genuine article? The frustrating part of this investigation lies with the witness and photographer James Ward. Recent emails to James have been returned and requests in writing to grant an interview have gone unanswered. This is more frustrating as I live only a short drive from him and the location where the photograph was taken. Any UFO photograph is only part of the story. The full details from the photographer are just as important as the photograph itself. In the meantime while I try to obtain a detailed interview with Mr. Ward the photograph itself has been sent for further analysis, this time in the USA. This photograph remains ‘interesting’ if nothing else, but it does serve to show how frustrating it can be when trying to investigate the UFO phenomenon. SPACESHIP

EARTH EARTH CALLING...

During the month of August, 2009 a total of 25,880 messages were collected from the public by the Australian Cosmos magazine website in an initiative to celebrate Australia's National Science Week and the International Year of Astronomy. Done with the support of NASA, the CSIRO, and Australia's Science Minister Kim Carr, it was a way of making people aware of our annual celebration of science, now in its 12th year, and get them thinking about the value and importance of science generally, and astronomy in particular. The messages were collected by the project from places as far flung as the Vatican City, Afghanistan and Antarctica, and NASA then converted them into binary code and beamed them into space at noon on Friday August 28 with the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex at Tidbinbilla. The transmitted messages were sent at 7.145 Gigahertz at 18 kilowatts in the direction of Gliese 581d, an exoplanet only recently discovered to be in its star's habitable zone. Gain from the antenna transmission source will increase this greatly: the signal is equivalent to using the combined transmission power of 300 billion mobile phones. The message will arrive around December 2029 - and the transmission will take two hours. Gliese 581d was selected because it is believed to be covered by a large and deep ocean and is the first serious 'waterworld' candidate discovered beyond our Solar System, hence being able to support life. No newsflash for the UFO community that life might exist elsewhere besides planet Earth, but extremely important to observe that no less than 1000 newspapers in different languages reported the initiative and more than 9,917 blogs around the world discussed it and linked to the site. There were also thousands of tweets in French, Russian,

Indonesian and any other language you can think of. Cosmos magazine reported that visitors to the site reached 254,620 in the 13 days the site collected messages, and visitors read 1.25 million pages, from messages left by participants to articles on exoplanets and astrobiology. Putting aside for the moment that this was a HUGE publicity stunt by the editor, Wilson de Silva, to prop up flagging sales of the magazine (did I say that out loud?), the exercise demonstrates the clear and overwhelming interest by members of our population in life outside this planet and our interest in communicating with it. This is probably not what the cover-up merchants want to know but hey, too bad. If ET is listening, now would be the time to step up any initiatives to strike up a conversation with the common earthman in the street. Will we get a response from ET? Scientists believe they will have to wait decades to find out - but we already know the answer, don't we. Following is a sample of messages registered on the Hello From Earth site. If nothing else, humans have a wonderful sense of humour: I think the surest sign that alien intelligence does exist is that none of you have tried to contact us yet. Amanda. Please tell us how you don't get dizzy in your spinning UFOs -- I get sick looking at Merry-Go-Rounds. Are you Aliens good looking? Billy. Portland, Australia Hey Aliens, like most good Aussies I'm wasting time at work by writing this message. Does your race resemble Alf at all? Coz that would be cool. Catcha in 2029! Matt. BUILDING BL OCK BLOCK OF LIFE FOUND ON COMET Reuters August 18 2009 http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/technology/ 5834080/building-block-of-life-found-oncomet/

The amino acid glycine, a fundamental building block of proteins, has been found in a comet for the first time, bolstering the theory that raw ingredients of life arrived on Earth from outer space. Microscopic traces of glycine were discovered in a sample of particles retrieved from the tail of comet Wild 2 by the NASA spacecraft Stardust deep in the solar system some 390 million km from Earth, in January 2004. Samples of gas and dust collected on a small dish lined with a super-fluffy material called aerogel were returned to Earth two years later in a canister that detached from the spacecraft and landed by parachute in the Utah desert. The initial detection of glycine, the most common of 20 amino acids in proteins on Earth, was reported last year, but it took time for scientists to confirm that the compound in question was extraterrestrial in origin. "We couldn't be sure it wasn't from the manufacturing or the handling of the spacecraft," said astrobiologist Jamie Elsila of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, the principal author of the latest research. "We've seen amino acids in meteorites before, but this is the first time it's been detected in a comet," she said. Chains of amino acids are strung together to form protein molecules in everything from hair to the enzymes that regulate chemical reactions inside living organisms. But scientists have long puzzled over whether these complex organic compounds originated on Earth or in space. The latest findings add credence to the notion that extraterrestrial objects such as

meteorites and comets may have seeded ancient Earth, and other planets, with the raw materials of life that formed elsewhere in the cosmos. "The discovery of glycine in a comet supports the idea that the fundamental building blocks of life are prevalent in space, and strengthens the argument that life in the universe may be common rather than rare," said Carl Pilcher, the director of the NASA Astrobiology Institute in California, which cofunded the research. Glycine and other amino acids have been found in a number of meteorites before, most notably one that landed near the town of Murchison, Australia in 1969, Elsila said. BRIT AIN RELEASES BRITAIN SECRET UFO FILES 18 August, 2009 Courier Mail, http://tinyurl.com/ndgcpa

Lemon-headed aliens, scrambled fighter jets and mysterious lights over a cemetery are among details of some 800 UFO sightings released by British authorities. But another intriguing finding to emerge from the 19811996 archives was a surge in reports at the time of UFO-related blockbusters such as 1996's Independence Day,not to mention the British television run of The X-Files. Among the most striking stories released yesterday was an account by the deputy commander of a U.S. Air Force base in England. He was baffled by what he'd seen: bright, pulsing lights in the night sky.Britain's defence ministry couldn't explain it either, but concluded that the unidentified flying object posed no threat. The British National Archives released the government's complete file on the "Rendlesham Forest Incident" of December 1980, one of Britain's most famous UFO sightings. It was among more than 4,000 pages posted online yesterday documenting 800 alleged encounters during the 1980s and 1990s. Over the past three years the Ministry of Defense has been gradually releasing previously secret UFO papers after facing Freedom of Information demands. The Rendlesham file contains U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Charles Halt's first-hand account of the event, which has been public knowledge for many years. The file includes the conclusions of a British government investigation and a letter from a former defense chief urging officials to take UFOs more seriously. Halt reported that two

servicemen had noticed "unusual lights" about 3 a.m. in the woods outside the gates of RAF Woodbridge, a U.S. base in eastern England. He wrote that patrolmen sent to investigate saw "a strange glowing object" in the forest. The metallic, triangular object "illuminated the entire forest with a white light," he wrote. The next day, investigators found depressions in the ground and unusual radiation readings. That night many personnel - including Halt himself - saw a pulsing "red sun-like light" in the trees that broke into five white objects and disappeared. The Ministry of Defence could offer no explanation for what the Air Force officers had reported seeing, but also found no evidence of "any threat to the defence of the United Kingdom." Nothing had registered on radar, and "there was no evidence of anything having intruded into U.K. airspace and landed near RAF Woodbridge." A 1983 letter in the file proposes a possible explanation involving a combination of the nearby Orford Ness lighthouse, a fireball and bright stars. Case closed, as far as the ministry was concerned. But not everyone was convinced. A 1985 letter from Lord Hill-Norton, former head of Britain's armed forces, to thenDefence Secretary Michael Heseltine, complained that the "puzzling and disquieting" episode had never been explained properly. Hill-Norton said if the sighting was genuine, "British airspace and territory are vulnerable to unwarranted intrusion to a disturbing degree." The alternative explanation was that "a sizable number of USAF personnel at an important base in British territory are capable of serious misperception, the consequences of which might be grave in military terms." Britain's defence ministry has charted UFO sightings since the 1950s, when a Flying Saucer Working Party was established. More files are due to be released by the archives through 2010. More mysterious was a UFO "attack" on a cemetery in Widnes, northwest England, in July 1996. A police report said a young man - "a sensible sort of lad and genuine" reported seeing a UFO firing beams of light into the ground. A police officer sent to the scene found a smoldering railway sleeper. "It does look rather odd," reported the officer, whose name was blacked out in the document. The files include a little grist for conspiracy theorists.

The head of the ministry's UFO desk wrote briefing notes in 1993 reporting a spate of sightings in southwest England and speculating whether they might be connected to Aurora, a secret U.S. spy plane whose existence has never been officially admitted. Atop one of his letters, someone scrawled: "Thank you. I suggest you now drop this subject."

the trees as the UFO passed by," the minister said. "I took photographs of the circular object with my camera. I would share the photograph with you as soon as I come back to Bhopal," he told HT over the phone.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's next prime minister might be nicknamed "the alien," but it's his wife who claims to have had a close encounter with another world. "While my body was asleep, I think my soul rode on a triangular-shaped UFO and went to Venus," Miyuki Hatoyama, the wife of premier-in-waiting Yukio Hatoyama, wrote in a book published last year. "It was a very beautiful place and it was really green." Miyuki, 66, described the extraterrestrial experience, which she said took place some 20 years ago, in a book entitled "Very Strange Things I've Encountered." When she awoke, Japan's next first lady wrote, she told her now ex-husband that she had just been to Venus. He advised her that it was probably just a dream. "My current husband has a different way of thinking," she wrote. "He would surely say 'Oh, that's great'." Yukio Hatoyama, 62, the rich grandson of a former prime minister, was once nicknamed "the alien" for his prominent eyes. Miyuki, also known for her culinary skills, spent six years acting in the Takarazuka Revue, an allfemale musical theater group. She met the U.S.-educated Yukio while living in America. MP MINISTER SA YS SAYS UFO DAMAGED CROP 3 September, 2009 Hindustan Times, New Delhi, http:// tinyurl.com/m4rttc

The latest entrant to the list of people in Madhya Pradesh who claim to have sighted unidentified flying objects is state Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Ramkrishna Kusmaria. Kusmaria said he spotted a UFO in Sukha village in Damoh district, about 275 km east of state capital Bhopal, while on an official tour. Kusmaria said he clearly saw the object in the sky, and it was emitting sharp sparks. "The object caused damage to the standing crops in the area. I saw papaya fruits fall off

For rookie astronauts flying aboard the International Space Station, the food is good, the rocket thrusters are loud and there's an odd tang in the air - apparently from outer space. "It's a very, very different environment than I expected," Discovery shuttle pilot Kevin Ford, a first-time spaceflyer, said from orbit late Friday. One of things Ford wasn't ready for is the weird smell.

The files reveal a 1996 spike in UFO sightings: 609 that year, up from 117 the year before. JAP AN'S NEW FIRST JAPAN'S LAD Y SA YS RODE LADY SAYS UFO TO VENUS

SMELL OF SP ACE SPACE SURPRISES ROOKIE ASTRONAUTS

Kusmaria's story, however, has landed the district officials in soup, as villagers have already started claiming compensation for crop damage caused by the UFO sighted by a no less than a minister. Superintendent of Police D.K. Arya said he was aware of the incident. But he said since he had not yet visited the spot, it would be difficult for him to comment on the UFO. District Collector R.A. Khandelwal rushed to Sukha village on Wednesday to assess the extent of crop damage. Several people have claimed seeing UFOs in the state in the last year or so. Ram Srivastava, a retired professor of Holkar Science College in Indore, said there had been nearly half-a-dozen similar claims in the state recently. He said, "Often there is optical illusion or gravitational whirlpool in which solar wind gets trapped that gives an impression of a UFO.

"From the [spacewalks] there really is a distinct smell of space when they come back in," Ford said from the station in a Friday night news conference. "It's like... something I haven't ever smelled before, but I'll never forget it.You know how those things stick with you." In the past, astronauts have described the smell of space as something akin to gunpowder or ozone.

Could this finally be it - 40 minutes of undisputed proof that we are not alone? Scientists at the Purple Mountain Observatory in Nanjing, China believe it is a real possibility that this footage of an unidentified flying object is the evidence we have all been waiting for. They have confirmed 40 minutes of footage of the object was captured during this summer's solar eclipse -- and that research has already started on a year-long investigation to find out what it is. And the scientists were not the only ones to capture the walnut-shaped object on camera. The clear, daylight sighting occurred over Deqing in Guandong Province. Dozens of students claimed to have seen the object sailing through the air during a rooftop observation of the July 22 solar eclipse. At least nine of the students photographed it.The UFO was also seen to change colour and shape, with the students claiming it initially appeared to be a glowing blue colour, but later darkened. Yesterday Chinese media outlet Sina.com reported that the Purple Mountain Observatory and Chinese Academy of Sciences claimed: 'China had discovered near the sun, by observation staff, an unidentified object. Its physical nature remains to be further studied. Currently manpower is being organised to deal with this data, complete the data analysis and reveal the scientific results. This will take at least one year's time to finalise.' FIRST UKRANIAN COSMONAUT, PA VEL PAVEL POPOVICH, DIES SEPTEMBER 30 2009 Paul Stonehill

The legendary Soviet cosmonaut and the first Ukrainian cosmonaut, Pavel Romanovich Popovich, passed away today. He was a member of the first "Gagarin" team of cosmonauts, a team of brave space explorers. Pavel Popovich passed away just five days short of his 80th birthday. He was Number

"Four" cosmonaut in the history of manned space flights. He was also an important person in the history of Soviet Ufology, and greatly helped promote UFO research in the dark days of censorship and stifling ideology, when "UFOs" were a forbidden subject for unauthorized research. Popovich was a kind, generous, brave person. He had also witnessed a UFO during his flight over the Atlantic Ocean. FRIENDLY UFO EMITTING LIGHT BEAM REPORTED BY RUSSIAN WOMEN October 2009 Michael Cohen, http:// www.allnewsweb.com/page9199492.php

A number of residents of the Russian city of Kamnsk-Uralsky have reported seeing a UFO hovering above commercial buildings in the town centre. The UFO was allegedly emitting, from time to time, a beam of light with seemingly unworldly qualities. Lyubov Tetueva, an IT professional, was walking her dogs at 11pm on September 17, along with two other female acquaintances. She noticed a 'very visible, dull, grey sphere' moving in the sky above them as they walked past the city library. The sphere appeared to the witnesses to be about half a metre in diameter. The UFO looked as if it was surveying local buildings, moving from one to another, slowing down and speeding up at times. When the UFO came close to a building it would emit a strong beam of light towards its subject that would completely illuminate a large section and then go right through its walls. 'If I wasn't with friends I would have thought I was hallucinating' noted Lyubov who reported the incident to the 'Kamensk Newspaper" Lyubov had difficulty sleeping that night. The next day at work she discovered others had also seen the object in another part of town and all noted the unusual beam of light. Descriptions of the object differed however.

'UFO' BLIP LEA VES LEAVES AIRPORT OFFICIALS FOXED March 21 2009 http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/

An unidentified flying object blipped on the city radar in the wee hours of Thursday, a little after mysterious objects were photographed hovering in the London sky.The blip that lasted for 15 minutes on the Bay of Bengal left airport and IAF officials foxed. While some suspect an unscheduled aircraft strayed into Indian airspace, others termed it a UFO. The Directo-ate General of Civil Aviation has ordered an investigation. The unidentified aircraft or object was spotted on the airport radar at 3.45am on Thursday. Sources said there was only a Cathay Pacific overflight scheduled for the time and in that direction. “But the flight showed a separate blip. What’s more, we had communication problems with the Cathay Pacific pilot during the time the mystery blip was on screen,” said an air controller. IAF clarified that it had no exercise scheduled over the Bay of Bengal at that hour, and that none of its aircraft in the region were airborne then.Though the blip may have been due to either a snag in the 11-year-old radar or the reflection of moonlight from a school of fish, what worries security agencies is the possibility of unauthorized aircraft entering Kolkata region. “If a foreign aircraft had ventured into Indian airspace, it is IAF’s role to scramble and counter it,” an AAI official said. The London sighting on Thursday has hyped interest in the Kolkata UFO. Given the 5.5hour time zone difference between India and UK and the 11-hour flight time, science fiction buffs drew a link between London’s ‘flying saucers’ and the mystery blip at the airport.
