proGramme Parkview Conference Room,

What must the universe think of us? Our early forays into space consisted of shooting explosive metal tubes out of our atmosphere just to see, you know, if they worked. Then we started putting things inside our exploding metal tubes -- dogs, monkeys, alfalfa and, occasionally, men. Not all of the men made it back to Earth safely, and it's a fair bet that almost none of the dogs and monkeys did - which means they are still up there, orbiting our planet endlessly. Dead and desiccated dogs and monkeys. Think about that next time you point at a satellite in wonderment. Of course, along with the ritual sacrifice of animals, we've also sent up experiments -- valid experiments to be sure, to help us sort out what sort of shape the universe is in, to learn more about the environment beyond our planet, to try and discover our place in the universe. We've also sent up quite a few missiles and bombs in our time, which we really can't justify. Not by any means. So imagine… just imagine you are ET and you have been parked in orbit around planet Earth, and you have spent the last 50 years watching this ridiculous parade of waste and detritus we've flung out into space, and wondered just what the hell kind of game is humanity playing? How we can justify the cost of rocketing a rabbit into the black yonder when we can't justify spending that money on the more immediate needs of our planet, and the people living on it? Sure, science is grand and all, and space is the great unknown, but burning our economy for very little gain is surely bordering on the ludicrous. Yes, humanity is ludicrous. Which brings me to our planet's next great phase of stupidity. Iran has developed a space program. (Didn't know that, did you?) Using rocketry based on Soviet, Chinese and North Korean designs (are the warning bells ringing yet?) they sent their first rocket up in 2008, and have been regularly sending payloads up ever since. Of course, many people (ie, presidents, prime ministers, 5-star generals etc.) are worried that Iran's space program is ultimately destined for military purposes (after all, you can never have enough nuclear warheads parked in orbit, can you?), and it seems this is indeed the case, despite Iran's 'official' plans to send a man to the moon by 2025. Apart from launching at least one of its rockets from the back of a military truck (what the?!), Iran is also guilty of sending strange items out into space. In February of this year, in a bold statement of pointless human idiocy to the rest of the galaxy, they sent two turtles, a worm and a rat 100 kilometres into orbit, all of which were supposed to parachute safely back down to Earth. Which didn't happen. Because… like… just how is a worm supposed to pull a ripcord?

AugusT- novemBeR 2010 Townsville, August 2010, 11.00pm I'd like to report a strange light I witnessed over Townsville in midAugust (approximately the 14th). I was standing in my backyard in Oonoonba, having a cigarette, at around 11.00pm. I glanced up into the sky and noticed an orange fireball about half the size of a full moon, which seemed to be stationary. I speculated that it must have been a military jet with afterburners lit, travelling directly away from me. However it seemed to stay in the one place far too long. It was hard to gauge at what altitude this "fireball" was, other than to say it was below the upper-level cloud. It remained stationary for approximately 30 seconds, then suddenly seemed to gain height at an extraordinary rate. The "fireball" grew dimmer the higher it travelled until it was a faint glow on the upper level cloud. It then headed in an easterly direction out over the ocean. I have no idea what this "fireball" was. The weather was cool for Townsville and the sky was partially cloudy, with some mid-level and high-level cloud. The "fireball" made no sound that I could hear.

Hillston and Mossgiel, and our policy is not to stay at school home sites so I drove about 30 kilometres west and tried to sleep in the back of the Toyota landcruiser. I gave up at 2.00am as it was just too cold, so I started driving to Ivanhoe and was up around 160kph when I noticed a rotating unit keeping pace with me for about 10 minutes. I thought it was a windmill at first. I saw my camera on the seat of the car and reached over and switched it on and set the zoom on maximum. The object was moving closer so I stopped, rapidly jumped out and took the photograph (below) just as the object disappeared. I could not tell if there was any noise as my engine was still running and there was no time to tell. The lights on the ground are from my

car headlights as I swung the car to face the object to see if I could illuminate it, but it was further away than I thought. The object would have been around one kilometre away. It looked to me to be about 20 metres in diameter. It seemed to have some depth but it was hard to tell. It looked solid and I believe it was a moonless night so it was very dark. So as soon as the lights went out I couldn't see it again. I remember looking at the stars to see if there was something passing between them and the ground, but I couldn't detect anything. I have driven that road many times and there are no trees of any real height, just saltbush and desert type ground, so it wasn't as if it could have dropped behind an object.

Trigg, Western Australia, 2009 I've seen some interesting lights recently that form in a group of three with a white/yellow hue, that constantly rearrange themselves outside the area of Trigg in Western Australia. For example, two will disappear, then they will reappear.

Mossgiel, NSW, 2006 The sighting took place between Mossgiel and Ivanhoe at 2.00am in 2004 in September. I was late leaving a remote job on a property between

MYSTERY UFO SEEN OVER MEGALONG VALLEY Rex Gilroy

At 6.30pm Saturday May 1st 2010, while walking my dog Andy on Katoomba Golf Course, which lies in South Katoomba on Cliff Drive just east of the Megalong Valley, just on dark I suddenly spotted to the northwest a bright silver object in the distance, high above the gumtrees that line the Cliff Drive boundary of the golf course. I was situated at the far south end of the course and I could see that the object was somewhere high above the northwest end of Megalong Valley. It was moving steadily in my direction. Then another smaller, fainter object appeared from out of the first object to rise above it, a faintly-glowing silvery object from which I detected spoke-like projections extending out of it. Then, slowing down, the large glowing object abruptly changed course to move off at an increasing speed to the southwest, the other object suddenly vanishing as the larger one picked up speed to fly out of sight, obscured by distance trees. The time was now 6.05pm. This was not to be my only sightings of what was surely a UFO, for the shining craft reappeared again, at 6.00pm on Thursday night 6th of May, this time flying from the north on a southerly course at a moderate speed, once again over the Megalong Valley, a little higher than the previous

appearance, and this time without the spoked craft. As I watched, this time from my side gate at my Kamillaroi Road property (which lies east of the golf course), I realised my digital cameras might pick it up. I rushed inside the house, grabbed the cameras, and within seconds began taking photos of the craft as it headed past my home to the west of me, seeming to descend as it approached Burragorang Valley, just south of Megalong. A few shots of the craft that I was able to take as it moved out of view behind trees across the street from me turned out shaky but for two, a long-shot and a close-up. These show a silver-glowing circular craft. The craft has not returned, but the fact that it was descending towards the Burragorang Valley (home of the vast, deep underground American/Australian space base) at a time when so many mysterious goings-on are happening in that valley, is further evidence of the top secret activity that continues to go on there. For weeks now people have been reporting strange lights in the valley, and it is certain that further extensions to the flight centres are still underway below ground.

WORMHOLES IN TIME AND SPACE - REVELATIONS OF A KATOOMBA PHOTOGRAPH Rex Gilroy

Š 2010

For more about the Blue Mountains, underground secret bases and time windows, see "Blue Mountains Triangle - Secret Underground Australian/American Bases and the ET Connection" by Rex and Heather Gilroy. [URU Publications 2007]. Images courtesy Rex Gilroy Š 2010

There are millions of planets beyond our Sun and which are far older than it. There is no reason why countless numbers of these might not support forms of technological life. Yet to contact these worlds beyond our Sun we will need a far more communicative space technology than we possess at present. Scientists speculate that it would take 100,000 years for radio signals from Earth to cross our galaxy, so that if intelligent life exists on these planets, they are so far distant by many more millions of miles that we would need a super technology capable of sending far stronger signals to reach such incredible distances. Actual space travel to such distant worlds seems far beyond our present scientific technology and the time involved at once dismisses such voyages. However, the harnessing of what scientists call 'worm holes' in time and space could be the answer, provided that a means of harnessing these can be found. It seems certain that these 'worm holes' have already been longharnesses by advanced extraterrestrial civilisations elsewhere in our galaxy and beyond, which explains the countless ET visitations to our world. These are of course 'Time Windows', by which beings inhabiting a parallel world in time and space (unseen to us but for digital photography evidence) are able to visit us, and by which means we Earthlings can at times visit the past. Both phenomena are similar in nature, although 'Time Window' contact is instantaneous. In previous newsletters, and in my books 'Australian UFOs - Through the Window of Time' (URU Publications 2004), and 'Blue Mountains Triangle - Secret Underground Australian/ American Bases and the ET Connection' (URU Publications 2006), I have published accounts of people on the Blue Mountains in particular, who have experienced momentary visits back into the past. Take the case of Mr Steve Donovan, who in October 1970 entered Cedar Valley over the 'saddle' between Ruined Castle rock formation and Mt Solitary on its western side. This ridge separates the Jamieson and Cedar Valleys in Katoomba, and

6

is one of the most eerie locales for the mystery happenings on the Blue Mountains (has the Australian/American top secret underground advanced space technology base in adjoining Burragorang Valley got anything to do with these phenomena?). Steve, in those days a camper, was working his way down the steep slope, intent upon crossing the creek to explore the western side of the valley. *** There had recently been a bushfire through here that had burnt all the forest on the 'saddle' and down the west side of this ridge. As I reached the creek and crossed over onto its western side, I looked back at the ridge. It was then that I got a shock, for I could see that the whole slope I had just climbed down was covered in dense forest, just as it had been before the recent bushfire! I also realised that, while the weather had been hot with a clear sky while I was on the ridge, and also as I was climbing down the burnt slope, now that I had reached the western side of the creek the sky was dull and it was now freezing cold! Mist and rain was descending upon me as if out of nowhere. I decided to get out of that valley as soon as possible. Then, as I recrossed the creek to begin the climb back up the 'saddle', I discovered that the green forest had vanished, the burnt landscape of the western slope had returned and the sky was again clear and the weather hot.

'Blue Mountains Triangle' contains many such accounts, and the evidence for American-ET contact which has aided the space scientists there in construction of spacecraft able to explore space via 'worm holes.' As members of the Blue Mountains UFO Research Club can testify, many strange events over the past few years alone, both day and night, have been witnessed in and over Burragorang Valley, about which the relevant authorities maintain a cloak of silence. Many mysterious glowing craft have been seen to fly out of secret openings in that valley, or descend into them at night by our members and also other local residents. That 'worm holes' and 'Time Windows' exist on the Blue Mountains we have no doubt, as from time window photos taken on the Blue Mountains and shown in a previous newsletter, but on Monday December 22nd 2009 at 8.15pm, this author, while photographing valley scenery in setting sunlight (daylight summer time) with a digital camera, captured two bright whiteglowing 'worm holes' of considerable size. As the photo shows, one appears high above Burragorang Valley, just over the north 'saddle' of the Ruined Castle rock formation, and the second one, like that above, is curved, descending behind the western 'saddle's lope above Cedar Creek. Both were transparent as the clouds can be seen through the top 'worm hole', and the far Burragorang Valley Cliff summit can be faintly through the bottom 'hole.' The question is - have these 'worm holes' anything to do with the top secret activities going on beneath Burragorang Valley, or they unrelated phenomena? So many mysterious phenomena have lately been photographed with digital cameras on the Blue Mountains - ie, eerie beings and other images in other dimensions reported in previous issues of our Club newsletters, and now this 'worm holes' photo, that the entire region seems to be one whole 'window,' not only to the past, but also to the stars.

Craig Harris

What follows is a transcript of a 2010 hypnotic regression session of a woman called ‘Michelle.’ Michelle has been a ‘Grey’ in several past lives, and these are her own words.

Craig Harris is a a Past Life and Life between Lives Regressional Hypnotherapist who has been practising for more than 14 years. Craig can be contacted at craigsuw@live.com.au or (phone) 07 5578 2332.

Michelle entered into a Grey ship once, when she was 10. It stayed near her house. She was placed onto a metal table. They just wanted to look at her up close, but only for a short time because her human side would take over with emotions. Even though they don’t understand fear, the Greys see its effect on the human body.

record her emotional experiences each time, and then analyse it when they get back home. They think we are crazy, but they can use these records for lessons when they are learning emotions. They want to learn what to do and what not to do. They don’t want to make the same mistakes they did last time.

Once she had an out of body experience with them. They visited a planet in the Orion constellation. It is one of their three new home worlds. Michelle could only sense the planet through their remote viewing, because she could not breathe their atmosphere. They can breathe ours and theirs.

She helps to translate concepts from her human mind to the Grey mind. In terms they would understand.

They understand our biology and illnesses, and that this year Michelle has not been well. They were told to back off and give her space by her subconscious. On a conscious level she would fear them, but on her subconscious level she knows them very well as friends. They prefer to contact her subconscious mind when she is sleeping. When she was a little girl she would leave her window open at night for her friends. They thought this was illogical because they can enter any physical structure with technology. They physically come into her room, stand next to her bed and telepathically make contact. Sometimes up to three of them. She stays asleep while they all talk. As a child she would consciously talk to them and remember their visits. But that changes when you get older. They can also do it from a distance, outside the house. She tells them what is comfortable for her health. They know they will have to keep their distance for a while. They have followed her soul through other lives, and her present life will be a different experience for them. They

Michelle has been one of the taller Greys. They are the leaders. She was a child of one of the leaders, and she had more of a free spirit. She would make her own rules and not follow theirs. Michelle has had 123 past lives on Earth, and her brother about nine. On the Grey world she has had nine past lives, and her brother has had 25. During that time she was always a tall Grey, and her he was always a wise one. Their world is night time darkness. Not a tropical environment but a bland world of rock because beauty would be a waste. No colours either. They can’t understand why we need colour, or wear colour. Every thing is logic and function. They wear a metallic suit. Their food is bland. They don’t understand why we spend so much time to make ours. They have no music. They could not understand what music was when they first heard ours. Michelle says: I have to teach people. I have to show the Greys lessons. They are aware of the Greys? Yes. Ok, what do they feel about them? They work with them, they understand they need to be monitoring. Especially

7

at the moment, they are not allowed near me. They have to keep their distance. They can watch and they can learn. Their guides can talk to my guides if they have any problems. Instead of coming to me. That they have to learn emotions and lessons. They can only learn these things from us as we do them. So your spiritual lessons come first? Yes, they come second. Do the Elders think it is important for the Greys to know what love is? Yes there are quite a few people around the world teaching them what love is. They have been approached in spirit and asked if they would like to help. In all different ways. Some in spiritual, some in emotional, some in both. Some in biological. They need to learn how we work in all different ways. But we learn from them too. Our governments learn from their technology. They have been all about learning technology, but life is not about that. It’s about the soul. They know we are not ready for their technology. We are not quite civilised enough. We would blow each other up. So in a way they are protecting us. Do the Greys make us frightened on purpose? No, it’s just that they don’t know of fear. Because they don’t know of that emotion. We fear what we don’t know. When we get to know them we won’t have that fear. And they won’t fear us either. Once they learn their emotions. They don’t how we handle certain negative emotions. Some emotions can be quite scary. So they will be starting off with just a little, like children. How to deal with the feelings. They have tried to cut out the negative emotions when cloning from our DNA samples. But they will still have to learn them. You can’t start off in the middle, you can only start off at the beginning. Only a little at a time. If they felt our happy, then to them it would feel like euphoria. They will have to balance and control the levels like we do. To live with their emotions. So they do not get carried away and lead to war. That is what they are learning from us. How not to use emotions. They are smart, they know they will have to introduce a small amount of feelings over several generations. Too much would be catastrophic. They think we are not civilised in technology. We are strong in our emotions and our spirituality. But this with technology could lead to our down fall.

8

Will there be a day that we could have open contact with them? It depends on our culture. If we can accept something different. Without fear and aggression. It may take one hundred years, it mat take longer. We understand the situation in spirit. A soul will be asked if they wish to help by being contacted. And whether they can handle the extra responsibility. On top of their own lessons. If humans were contacted openly then yes, some would agree to help them with their lessons. But the majority would not at this time. One day we will both help each other. (The Greys prefer to contact Michelle in the physical body.) When they change their DNA they will still look the same. That is who they are. They are happy with their body. They did originally have emotions. This was a negative for them. Because they destroyed themselves. Through war they blew up their planet. Realising their mistake they agreed they could not have advanced technology and emotions together. So they removed the emotional DNA from their bodies. It had to be done or they would not have survived at that stage. It has been planned in spirit that we would find each other. That both races will be able to help the other. One from technology, one from emotionally. Within a couple of hundred years they will start to feel what we feel. They will all need to be re-cloned. With each new generation to be born, they will have more emotions. Probably a minimum of five generations. Not everyone will have emotions to begin with. But they will be able to have children again, only cloned instead of being born. They will be able to show them love while they grow. Right now though they don’t understand us. They find us quite amusing and illogical. They don’t understand what tears are or happiness. The Greys do have a spiritual world like us. But they have been separated from it all this time. It will be awakened again slowly. Did the Blondes evolve like humans have? The Blondes have been around for a very long time. They are not as advanced as the Greys, but are close. They are smart. They started just like us. Growing in the wisdom of emotions

and spirit first. Then in technology. And how to balance them both without war. Because they are more spiritual. They can communicate more and understand them. They have nothing to learn from us. They have much to teach us. We have more emotions than them. We feel more then they do. We are the most emotional life form. We are unique. Our Elders do acknowledge that we are challenged in a way. But that the Greys are challenged more. It is harder to learn emotions than it is to learn technology. The inner control is much harder than the outer. In the future it will be possible to have an alliance with the Greys. It depends on how we both go. It would be wise to. There have been wars in the past. The Greys are quite placid compared to some. We are very protected. There are other races that are more aggressive. Their eyes glow red at night. They are less emotional and have nothing to learn from us. They feel aggression. They have reptile skin, like a crocodile. Can you tell me about their eyes? Yes, they are big and black. They have a clear eyelid that covers the eye ball. That protects their eyes from dust and dirt. Their world is a very concrete like structure. No warmth, very cold and sterile. The darkness of their eye is like a sunglass. It helps to keep the light level down. Our sunlight is too bright for them. Their world is much darker than ours. They can remove the black layer. They do this for the children. So they don’t scare them. But when the kids know them well, they put it back up because that’s who they are. It hurts their eyes so they only lower it for a short time. That’s the reason they only come at night too. It’s easier on their eyes. Our daylight would be too painful. Even with the black eyelid. They would need to have more protection. They have hunch-back Greys. They are older wiser teachers. My brother has been one. The teachers will be the ones to teach the rest about emotions. They are more open and understanding, and will find it easier. The Greys talk to my brother at night as well. They like learning from him. He gets contacted about the same amount as me. But he has agreed not to remember any of the contacts. Teachers prefer their own space to think about things on their own.

Radar Observations of Unknown Craft over Bentwaters - August 1956 © Sam Willey Willey, Alienationsam.com The following UFO case was one of many featured in Project Blue Book, a project ran by the United States Air Force between 1952 and 1970 designed to study unknown aerial phenomenon. The events began late at night on August 13th 1956 and extended five hours into the early hours of August 14th 1956. Two radar operators at two military bases in the east of England, one of which was RAF Bentwaters, the scene of the historic and well documented Rendlesham Forest Incident of 1980, repeatedly tracked single and multiple objects. According to United States Air Force reports the sighting could not be explained by erratic weather nor could it be explained by radar malfunction. The objects were very real and to this day have never been explained. The incident occurred as follows The events began at 9:30pm (GMT ) when Airman 2nd Class John Vaccane of the US Air Force at RAF Bentwaters tracked a single unknown object on ground controlled approach radar. The object appeared 25-30 miles east southeast and moved at a constant 295 degree heading across the scope. The object traveled 40-50 miles in only 30 seconds and was calculated traveling at speeds of between 4,800 and 6,000-mph. The target was lost 15-20 miles north west of RAF Bentwaters. Only a matter of minutes later at around 9:25pm a group of around 12-15 objects were picked up on radar 8 miles south west of Bentwaters. The group of objects appeared to move as a group toward the north east at varying speeds. Reportedly the fleet covered a 6-7 mile area on the scope. The blips faded considerably at a point 14 miles north east of Bentwaters and were then tracked approximately 40 miles north east of Bentwaters, when they apparently merged together into one single strong blip which was several times larger than a B-36 aircraft, which was the largest operational bomber in history. The single blip appeared stationary at the point 40 miles from Bentwaters for 10-15 minutes then moved 5-6 miles north east and stopped again for 3-5 minutes. The single object finally moved out of radar range (50 miles) at 9:55pm. The average speed of the

ufO encounter

objects was calculated to be between 290 and 700-mph. At 10:00pm yet another object was picked up about 30 miles east of Bentwaters and tracked to a point about 25 miles west of the station. The object was tracked for a total of 16 seconds. The radar operator estimated the speed of this object to be in excess of 4000 mph, but the time and distance figures indicated a speed of roughly 12,000 mph. According to the Project Blue Book report on this incident, another object was picked up on radar at 10:55pm. The object was picked up 30 miles east of Bentwaters moving towards the west at an estimated speed of 2,000-4,000mph. The object disappeared from radar 30 miles west of the station. At this point someone at Bentwaters GCA station called Lakenheath RATCC station asking the night watch supervisor if he had any 4,000-mph targets on his scopes and described the track of the 4th object. The caller also stated that the control tower at Bentwaters had reported seeing a bright light passing over a field from east to west at a “terrific” speed at around 4,000 feet in altitude. The caller also mentioned that at the same time a pilot of a C-47 aircraft reported a bright light go directly under his aircraft and again the light was reported at going east to west. The night watch supervisor at Lakenheath was sceptical of the reports but had all controllers start scanning radar scopes using full MTI (moving target indicator).

Just after the search was launched one of the controllers noticed a stationary blip on scopes at an indicated position 20-25 miles south west of Lakenheath. The night watch supervisor called the GCA unit at Lakenheath to see if they were also picking up the stationary object and they confirmed the target. As Lakenheath RATCC personnel watched the target it began to move in a north north-east direction at approximately 400-600- mph. Personnel explained there was no build up in speed, it was just constant from start to finish. The night watch supervisor at Lakenheath contacted local AFB command personnel and kept them informed of the events from this point on. After 30-45 minutes the RAF scrambled a De Haviland Venom Night Fighter aircraft to investigate the unknown. F.H.C Wimbledon, who was Chief Controller on duty at the main RAF Radar Station in East Anglia on the night, stated the following about the scrambling of the aircraft -“I was Chief Controller on duty at the main RAF Radar Station in East Anglia on the night in question. My duties

pause the pilot radioed back and said he had lost the target and asked Lakenheath if they still had the object on radar. Lakenheath RATCC informed the pilot that the target had made a swift circle movement and was now behind the aircraft. The pilot confirmed and said he would try and shake it. The pilot then tried a number of evasive manoeuvres but was unable to lose the object. During this time the object was still being picked up on radar and a 500 feet distance was registered between the object and the aircraft.

were to monitor the radar picture and to scramble the Battle Flight, who were on duty 24 hours a day, to intercept any intruder of British airspace not positively identified in my sector of responsibility.” “I remember Lakenheath USAF base telephoning to say there was some thing “buzzing” their airfield circuit. I scrambled a Venom night fighter from the Battle Flight through Sector and my controller in the Interception Cabin took over control of it. The Interception Control team would consist of one Fighter Controller (an Officer), a Corporal, a tracker and a height reader. That is, four highly trained personnel in addition to myself could now clearly see the object on our radarscopes.” The Venom fighter was vectored by RATCC radar to the site of the object which according to the night watch supervisor was stationary at the time at an altitude of 15,000-20,000 feet and was about 16 miles south west of Lakenheath. Soon after Lakenheath informed the pilot that the target was dead ahead of him. The pilot acknowledged the transmission and said he had his radar fire-control system locked on target. After a brief

According to the Project Blue Book report the pilot said he was not able to shake the object and requested assistance. After around 10 minutes the first venom pilot said he was returning to base as he was very low on fuel. According to the Lakenheath night watch supervisor the object followed the aircraft a short distance as the pilot headed south south-west towards London and then resumed a no movement state. F.H.C Wimbledon stated the following - “I then scrambled a second Venom which was vectored toward the area but before it arrived on the scene the target had disappeared from our scopes and although we continued to keep a careful watch was not seen by us.” “The fact remains that at least nine RAF ground personnel and two RAF aircrew were conscious of an object sufficiently “solid” to give returns on radar. Naturally, all this was reported and a Senior Officer from the Air Ministry came down and interrogated us.” Following the aerial chase the object did not leave the area straight away. The night watch supervisor at Lakenheath stated the following “The target made a couple more short moves, then left our radar coverage in

a northerly direction — speed still about 600 mph. We lost target outbound to the north at about 50-60 miles., which is normal if aircraft or target is at an altitude below 5000 feet (because of the radiation lobe of that type radar [a CPS-5])” Project Blue Book reported that the object was lost at around 3:30pm. J. Allen Hynek, who was a well-known and respected consultant to the Air Force regarding unknown aerial phenomenon, made the following remarks about the events - “It seems highly unlikely, for instance, that the Perseid meteors could have been the cause of the sightings, especially in view of the statement of observers that shooting stars were exceptionally numerous that evening, thus plying that they were able to distinguish the two phenomena. Further, if any credence can be given to the manoeuvres of the objects as sighted visually and by radar, the meteor hypothesis must be ruled out.” The Condon Report’s analysis of the case stated the following - “In summary, this is the most puzzling and unusual case in the radar-visual files. The apparently rational, intelligent behaviour of the UFO suggests a mechanical device of unknown origin as the most probable explanation of this sighting. However, in view of the inevitable fallibility of witnesses, more conventional explanations of this report cannot be entirely ruled out.” To this very day the events of that night back in 1956 have never been explained. THE HORTEN HO 2-29 - the future in 1944? With its smooth and elegant lines, this 'flying wing' could be a prototype for the future successor to the stealth bomber, but it was actually designed by the Nazis 30 years before the Americans successfully developed radar-invisible technology. Now an engineering team has reconstructed the Horten Ho 2-29 from blueprints with startling results. First built and tested in the air in March 1944, it was designed with a greater range and speed than any plane previously built and was the first aircraft to use the stealth technology now deployed by the U.S. in its B-2 bombers. Thankfully Hitler's engineers only made three prototypes, which were tested by being dragged behind a glider, and they were not able to build them on an industrial scale before the Allied forces invaded.

From Panzer tanks through to the V-2 rocket, it has long been recognized that Germany's technological expertise during the war was years ahead of the Allies. But by 1943, Nazi high command feared that the war was beginning to turn against them, and were desperate to develop new weapons to help turn the tide. Nazi bombers were suffering badly when faced with the speed and manoeuvrability of the Spitfire and other Allied fighters. Hitler was also desperate to develop a bomber with the range and capacity to reach the United States . The 142-foot wingspan Horten Ho 2-29 bomber was submitted for approval in 1944, and it would have been able to fly from Berlin to New York and back without refuelling, thanks to the blended wing design and six BMW 003A or eight Junker Jumo p004B turbojets. It was believed that the electromagnetic waves of radar would be absorbed by the aircraft, and in conjunction with the wing's sculpted surfaces, the craft would be rendered almost invisible to radar detectors. The plane was covered in radar absorbent paint with a high graphite content, which has a similar chemical make-up to charcoal. This was the same method eventually used by the U.S. in its first stealth aircraft in the early 1980s, the F117A Nighthawk. Thanks to the use of wood and carbon, jet engines integrated into the fuselage, and its blended surfaces, the plane could have been in London eight minutes after the radar system detected it. After the war the Americans captured the prototype Ho 229s along with the blueprints and used some of their technological advances to aid their own designs, but experts always doubted claims that the Horton could actually function as a stealth aircraft. It took 2,500 man-hours and $250,000 to reconstruct the Horten Ho 2-29, and although this replica cannot fly, it was radartested by placing it on a 50 foot articulating pole and exposing it to electromagnetic waves. The team demonstrated that although the aircraft is not completely invisible to the type of radar used in the war, it would have been stealthy enough and fast enough to ensure that it could reach London before Spitfires could be scrambled to intercept it. "If the Germans had had time to develop this aircraft, it could well have had an impact," says Peter Murton, aviation expert from the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, in Cambridgeshire. The reconstruction of the Horten Ho 2-29 was commissioned for a documentary on the National Geographic Channel.

ALIEN AUTOPSY CASEBOOK THE FULL FA CTS FINALL Y REVEALED FACTS FINALLY PHILIP MANTLE

Foreword by Robert Kiviat, FOX TV, Executive Producer of 'Alien Autopsy - Fact or Fiction?' Afterword by Mark Center, leading American Alien Autopsy researcher. There have been many UFO photographs and film/video submitted to UFO researchers down the years but by far the most controversial of them all is the Alien Autopsy Film. London businessman Ray Santilli launched this film on the TV viewing public in August 1995. Was it real or fake? Santilli claimed it showed the autopsy of a dead alien recovered from a crashed flying saucer found near Roswell, New Mexico in l947.No one knew the facts. The first recognised UFO researcher that Ray Santilli contacted some eighteen months before the film’s TV broadcast was Philip Mantle, the then Director of Investigations for the British UFO Research Association. In one of their early meetings over lunch Mantle looked Santilli in the eye and told him in no uncertain words that he would get to the bottom of this film and its origin. Santilli calmly smiled and stated that this was not a problem as the film was authentic.

12

Little did Mantle realise that it would take fourteen years to get to the bottom of it, but with the help of a team of colleagues around the world, he finally did. Now, for the first time, Mantle shares all of his research in one book. Alien Autopsy Casebook will leave you in no doubt aboutexactly what this film is. Read the evidence for yourself and make up your own mind. About the Author: Philip Mantle lives in Pontefract, West Yorkshire England. He has been involved in UFO research and investigation for over 30 years. He is the former Director of Investigations for the British UFO Research Association and former representative for England for the MUTUAL UFO NETWORK. His previous books have been published in 9 different countries and in 5 different languages. He is currently the editor of the internationally distributed newsstand magazine UFO MATRIX.

ANOTHER NT UFO SPOTTED

E.T. CALLING? HERE'S WHAT TO DO

September 20 2010 Northern Territory News, Darwin, http:// tinyurl.com/28e8ezy

http://cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/ 2010/10/04/5229557-et-calling-hereswhat-to-do

Another UFO in the Territory sky has left a man in surprise and wonder -- only weeks after Queensland man Erik Black spotted a hamburger-shaped unknown flying object in Humpty Doo. The latest spotter, Roger, a seafarer for more than 40 years, told Territory UFOlogist Alan Ferguson he saw a 'bright orange light' earlier this month in the night sky over the Timor Sea. 'The object appeared to be a lozenge shaped bright orange light -possibly made up of a row of bright lights, with a slight silvery tail that tapered to a point approximately six times the length of the object,' he said. The man said the object appeared ahead of the ship he was travelling on at a speed of 12 knots 'at about 45 degrees on the starboard bow' '(It) crossed ahead from right to left to disappear behind a cloud. It was travelling more or less from south to north. The object appeared to travel in a straight horizontal path, 40 degrees above the horizon.' Roger said the sighting -- which occurred at 2.15am on September 6 in the Timor Sea on Latitude 11 degrees 26.5' South; 128 degrees 09.8' East -- lasted for 10 seconds, and travelled very fast. 'It was just a narrow lozenge shaped bright orange light, or perhaps a row of lights close together. No sign of any structure. The tail looked more like an exhaust plume or like the tail of a comet, but quite faint and silvery white, tapering to a defined point from the rear of the object. Not bright like the tail of a meteorite or space junk re-entry, nor like an aircraft con trail.' Roger said in 40 years as a seafaring professional on merchant ships all over the world he had 'indeed seen many phenomena in the sky. But this was the only one I can say was definitely different from anything that I have seen before,' he said. 'If it was some kind of top secret aircraft of earth origin, I hope it is on our side.' Northern Territory UFOlogist Alan Ferguson said the sighting sounded 'legitimate'. 'He is adamant 40 years experience of being at sea he thought he had seen it all until this sighting,' Mr Ferguson said. 'Each case needs to be treated on its merits and I do believe that this guy has seen something different that he can't explain.'

Experts have hammered out a simplified game plan to follow in the event that signals from an extraterrestrial civilization are ever detected. The new guidelines for dealing with theoretical radio transmissions from E.T. were adopted unanimously by the International Academy of Astronautics' SETI Permanent Study group last week during a meeting in Prague, the Czech capital. The timing is weirdly coincidental, in that the long-scheduled meeting came amid an international buzz over the United Nations' role in responding to a hypothetical E.T. call. Malaysian astronomer Mazlan Othman, head of the U.N. Office for Outer Space Affairs, said the world body was 'a ready-made mechanism for such coordination,' and quite a few news outlets suggested that Othman herself might be named the point person for dealing with extraterrestrial communications. Othman eventually said she wasn't aiming to become an ambassador to the aliens. But the newly approved protocol does say the U.N. secretary-general would be among the first people officially notified if alien contact is confirmed. I'm stressing the word 'officially' because the protocol also says scientists shouldn't try to hush up any detection of signals they think might be coming from E.T. Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon may well find out about alien detection from a Twitter tweet rather than an official phone call. The earlier version of the protocols was a lot wordier, and called for notifying 10 separate organizations about 'credible evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence.' The revised protocols also make a point of saying that scientists should deal honestly with the news media in the event of a signal detection. Conspiracy theorists might say the oneworld government 'don't need no stinking protocols,' to paraphrase a classic movie scene. And it's true that the protocols are not legally binding. But the SETI League found it comforting that the experts declared their commitment to openness in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Here's the text of the revised protocols, which are posted on the SETI League website:

Preamble The parties to this declaration are individuals and institutions participating in the scientific Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). The purpose of this document is to declare our commitment to conduct this search in a scientifically valid and transparent manner and to establish uniform procedures for the announcement of a confirmed SETI detection. This commitment is made in recognition of the profound scientific, social, ethical, legal, philosophical and other implications of a SETI detection. As this enterprise enjoys wide public interest, but engenders uncertainty about how information collected during the search will be handled, the signatories have voluntarily constructed this declaration. It, together with a current list of signatory parties, will be placed on file with the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA). Principles: 1. Searching: SETI experiments will be conducted transparently, and its practitioners will be free to present reports on activities and results in public and professional fora. They will also be responsive to news organizations and other public communications media about their work. 2. Handling candidate evidence: In the event of a suspected detection of extraterrestrial intelligence, the discoverer will make all efforts to verify the detection, using the resources available to the discoverer and with the collaboration of other investigators, whether or not signatories to this Declaration. Such efforts will include, but not be limited to, observations at more than one facility and/ or by more than one organization. There is no obligation to disclose verification efforts while they are underway, and there should be no premature disclosures pending verification. Inquiries from the media and news organizations should be responded to promptly and honestly. Information about candidate signals or other detections should be treated in the same way that any scientist would treat provisional laboratory results. The Rio Scale, or its equivalent, should be used as a guide to the import and significance of candidate discoveries for the benefit of non-specialist audiences. 3. Confirmed detections: If the verification

13

process confirms by the consensus of the other investigators involved and to a degree of certainty judged by the discoverers to be credible that a signal or other evidence is due to extraterrestrial intelligence, the discoverer shall report this conclusion in a full and complete open manner to the public, the scientific community, and the Secretary General of the United Nations. The confirmation report will include the basic data, the process and results of the verification efforts, any conclusions and interpretations, and any detected information content of the signal itself. A formal report will also be made to the International Astronomical Union (IAU). 4. All data necessary for the confirmation of the detection should be made available to the international scientific community through publications, meetings, conferences, and other appropriate means. 5.The discovery should be monitored. Any data bearing on the evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence should be recorded and stored permanently to the greatest extent feasible and practicable, in a form that will make it available to observers and to the scientific community for further analysis and interpretation. 6. If the evidence of detection is in the form of electromagnetic signals, observers should seek international agreement to protect the appropriate frequencies by exercising the extraordinary procedures established within the World Administrative Radio Council of the International Telecommunication Union. 7. Post Detection: A Post-Detection Task Group under the auspices of the IAA SETI Permanent Study Group has been established to assist in matters that may arise in the event of a confirmed signal, and to support the scientific and public analysis by offering guidance, interpretation, and discussion of the wider implications of the detection. 8. Response to signals: In the case of the confirmed detection of a signal, signatories to this declaration will not respond without first seeking guidance and consent of a broadly representative international body, such as the United Nations. Unanimously adopted by the SETI Permanent Study Group of the International Academy of Astronautics, at its annual meeting in Prague, Czech Republic, on 30 September 2010. These revised and streamlined Protocols are intended to replace the previous document adopted by the International Academy of Astronautics in 1989. Will these protocols ever be put into practice? Most of the scientists involved in SETI say 50 years of searching isn't long enough to judge whether our efforts to detect alien signals are on the right track

14

or not. It may be that advanced extraterrestrial civilizations don't care enough about us monkeys to make contact, just as we don't spend a lot of time letting ants know what we're up to. It may be that intelligence is a volatile thing, and that civilizations self-destruct before they're around long enough to send signals to other star systems. Or it may be that aliens are just boring themselves to death. OUR GALAXY MA Y MAY CONT AIN BILLIONS CONTAIN OF PLANETS WITH THE SAME MASS AS EARTH http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2010/ oct/28/galaxy-planets-mass-earth-life

There may be an Earth-like planet circling one in every four stars in the night sky, according to the first census of alien worlds in our celestial neighbourhood.

The survey is a yardstick for scientists searching for life elsewhere and suggests there could be 50 billion planets with a similar mass to Earth in our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Around a fifth of these distant Earths are expected to lie within their solar system's habitable or 'Goldilocks zone', where the distance from the parent star keeps the

planet's surface at just the right temperature for liquid water to form. The presence of running water on a planet is widely regarded as a prerequisite for the emergence of life and underpins searches for extraterrestrials by Nasa and other space agencies. In total, the astronomers detected 33 planets orbiting 22 stars, and the distribution of the planets showed they became more plentiful the lower their mass. By extrapolating from the census findings, the team worked out the odds of a star being orbited by smaller planets than those they could detect. They estimate that 23% of sun-like stars are circled by an Earth-like planet, 12% are orbited by more massive 'super-Earths' and around 1.6% are circled by planets similar to the gas giant, Jupiter. 'For the first time we have carried out a planet census among the sun-like stars in our neighbourhood of the galaxy. And now we know ... what fraction of the sun-like stars harbour planets of different sizes,' said Geoffrey Marcy, an astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley. 'It means we can look up at the stars at night and know that something like a quarter harbour a planet of nearly Earth's size,' he added. The findings are reported in the journal, Science. The results conflict with researchers' models of how planets fall into orbit around their stars. It had been thought that after planets were born from cosmic dust and detritus, they spiralled in towards their parent star but left swathes of empty space close in, said Andrew Howard, who led the study. 'We found lots of small planets very close to their stars, where the models say there should be nothing,' he said. 'It means that our popular model of planet formation has problems.' It will be some time before scientists can

be sure there are truly Earth-like planets in our cosmic backyard. The Berkeley team detected planets by their mass alone, but know nothing about their sizes. This makes it impossible to answer crucial questions such as whether the planets are wet and rocky like Earth, or are inhospitable gas balls or giant water worlds. Clarification is expected to come from NASA's Kepler space telescope, which is searching for Earth-sized planets around more than 156,000 stars. In June, Kepler scientists reported that they had spotted 706 possible alien worlds as they passed across the face of their parent stars. Based on their census, Howard and Marcy believe Kepler will find between 120 and 260 'plausibly terrestrial worlds'. MYSTERY OF TUNGUSKA METEORITE SOLVED Anton Yevseev, http://english.pravda.ru/ science/mysteries/25-10-2010/115495tunguska_meteorite-0/

102 years after the fall of the famous celestial body in Tunguska taiga, scientists finally managed to identify the crash site of one of its fragments and examine the unusual composition of the substance of this space creature. The study was conducted using a unique instrument -GPR. As a result, it was proved that it was not a meteorite, but a comet. The mystery of the Tunguska meteorite has long attracted the attention of researchers from around the world. Perhaps no visitor from outer space in the history of the mankind created so much noise, both literally and figuratively. The most surprising is the fact that in some hundredodd years that have passed since that event, scientists have failed to solve this puzzle. What happened in the Podkamennaya Tunguska River back in 1908? The witnesses say that on June 30 at about 7.00am something resembling a giant ball flew over the territory of Central Siberia in the north-western direction. Its flight was accompanied by sound and light effects, and ended with a powerful explosion followed by a felling of forest between the rivers Kimchu and Hushmo -- tributaries of the Podkamennaya Tunguska. The explosion occurred at 7:14am local time. It was accompanied by a powerful earthquake which was registered by most seismological stations of the world, and air waves. It was noted that the echo of the explosion at Tunguska was heard over 800 kilometers away from the epicenter, the blast felled 2100 km² of forest, and within a radius of 200 km windows of some houses were broken. Soon after, a magnetic storm began which lasted 5 hours. Here's how this event is described by a witness, local resident Semyon Semenov: 'I was swinging my axe when the sky in the north was divided into two parts and a fire appeared in it above the forest, which

ufO encounter

covered the entire northern part of the sky. At that moment I felt so hot, as if my shirt was on fire. I wanted to tear and throw off my shirt, but the sky slammed shut and there was a strong blow. I was dropped off the porch and blown away. 'After the strike came a tapping, as if rocks were falling from the sky or guns fired, the ground trembled, and when I lay on the ground, I feared that the rocks would break my head. At a time when the sky opened up, a hot wind swept from the north, like from a cannon, which has left traces on the ground in the form of tracks. Then it turned out that many of the windows shattered, and the iron tab for door lock in the barn was broken.' Somewhat later in the night on June 30, an intense glow of the sky, night shining clouds, and unusually colourful dusk were observed in dozens of settlements in Western Europe and Russia. By spectral observations made in Germany and England, this glow was not a part of the aurora, and was of some different nature. In studying this phenomenon, French astronomers first suggested that on June 30 the Earth clashed with a cloud of cosmic dust. Later this hypothesis was supported by several other prominent scientists, in particular B. I. Vernadsky. However, he thought that perhaps it was not a simple cloud of dust but a frozen cloud, that is, a fragment of the comet's nucleus. However, most astronomers thought that the Tunguska event was the result of the falling of a giant meteorite to Earth. The first expedition to the site of the disaster was sent only in 1921, but its members failed to get there. Only in 1927 a research team led by Leonid A. Kulik was able to reach the epicenter of the explosion. The most interesting thing is that they have not found a crater left by a meteorite impact on Earth. Another oddity of the Tunguska event was that the forest was knocked over a large area close to the presumed site of a meteorite, but at the very epicenter of the explosion it remained standing. It seemed that the 'alien' exploded in the air and did not reach the planet's surface.

Over the subsequent years, researchers have not managed to find a meteorite crater or fragments of the celestial body itself. Many scholars have asked a logical question whether it was a meteorite. There were hypotheses that the explosion was not made by a celestial body, but by

Earth's marsh gas that escaped from within (though the traces of its presence in this place were also not found), or that the cause of the accident was secret experiments of Nikola Tesla with electricity. However, all these theories also have not been confirmed. The first steps toward unravelling the mystery of Tunguska were made in 2007 by a group of Italian researchers. Their expedition conducted geological surveys of the bottom and banks of Lake Cheko, located a few miles from the center of the explosion, and determined that this pool was a conical hopper with a fairly great depth of 50 meters. All this suggests that a piece of the Tunguska meteorite fell there. Other candidates for the role of 'craters' were nearby swamps Bublik, Suslov and Cranberry funnels. In 2010, an expedition by Vladimir Alexeev with the Troitsk Innovation and Nuclear Research Institute (TRINITY) set off to the area of the fall of the meteorite. Scientists brought ground-penetrating radar -- a unique instrument capable of lighting the ground to the depth of 100 meters. As a result, the examination of Suslov crater found that the crater resulted from a severe impact of a celestial body on the surface of the Earth. The bottom of this funnel was structured as follows: the top layers were modern permafrost, below were damaged layers, and finally, deeper, the fragments of the cosmic body were discovered. Preliminary analysis showed that it was a huge piece of ice that apparently broke away from the comet's nucleus. The famous 'tailed stars' consist of very unusual ice formed with water frozen by space, methane and other gases with a mixture of solid particles. The kernel that weighs hundreds of billions of tons is followed by a multi-kilometers long tail, consisting of rarefied gases formed by evaporation of the ice by the sun. It turns out that when approaching Earth, icy nucleus of comet shattered into fragments, which were scattered by the explosion several kilometers away. Having fallen on the surface of our planet, they formed several craters, which include Suslov funnel examined by the group of Alekseev. The tail of a comet that broke off scattered through the atmosphere, causing a very strange glow of the sky, which was observed on the night after falling of the celestial body. Also, scientists were able to study traces of the matter of non-terrestrial origin detained in the resin of trees in the epicenter of the explosion (they still grow there). The researchers concluded that the substance was very similar to cosmic dust which is a part of the comet nucleus. This once again convinced them that the Tunguska 'stranger' should be called not a

15

meteorite, but a comet. Thus, the theory suggested many years ago by Academician V. I. Vernadsky about a comet nature of the Tunguska meteorite has now received actual confirmation. It is interesting that it took scientists nearly a hundred years to solve this mystery. But as they say, better late than never.

ALIEN FANT ASY FANTASY OFF THE PLANET http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2010/ 11/10/192981_ntnews.html

A man claiming to have been abducted by two female aliens -- a blonde and an Asian -- will be one of the guest speakers at a UFO conference in Central Australia early next year. Peter Khoury will be among the speakers invited to the three-day event at wellknown UFO hotspot Wycliffe Well. His abduction is claimed to be the first with DNA-tested biological evidence after a blonde hair was recovered in the aftermath. Wycliffe Well Holiday Park will host the much-anticipated conference from March 18-20 next year. It is the second conference to be proposed in the NT following local UFOlogist Alan Ferguson's proposal to hold one in Darwin. Organiser Arc Van der Zalm said people would not be disappointed with the calibre of speakers. The list includes Rex Gilroy -- who claims to be the father of Australian cryptozoology (the search for animals that are considered to be legendary or otherwise nonexistent by mainstream biology). Mr Van der Zalm has owned the Park since January and said he had seen half a dozen 'amazing things' in the relatively short time he had been there. He said that just last week 'we had two sightings in two nights from two different people'. The area's history is steeped in UFO sightings. During WWII, when the area was an Army market garden, servicemen kept records of the 'weird un-identified flying objects they would encounter', including daytime sightings. HAPPY BIRTHDA Y, BIRTHDAY ISS Timofei Belov, http://english.pravda.ru/ science/tech/02-11-2010/115627iss_birthday-0/

The International Space Station is ten years old today, November 2. The greatest experimental platform has been inhabited on an ongoing basis since the year 2000 after construction began in 1998, and has been home to 196 cosmonauts from around the world. The International Space Station is the fruit of a policy of collaboration after the Space race between the USSR and the USA in the second half of the twentieth century,

16

The first part to be launched in November 1998 was the Russian module Zarya and the original projection was a two-year construction process followed by ten years of experiments. Nowadays, scientists are prolonging their prognosis for a further ten years, considering that the ISS will be operational at least until 2020, an extension of a decade on the original plan. In January 1999, the US module Unity was joined to Zarya, being carried by discovery and 18 months later, the Russian habitation module, Zvezda, saw the station take shape. The station began to accommodate space tourists (the first was Dennis Tito in 2001). Over its first decade, the ISS saw over 150 spacewalks, received 67 Russian vehicles to 34 American spaceships and docked with modules from Japan and the European Space Agency. The plan in the near future is to add modules, creating a living and working space of 1,217 cubic metres. The station's six-man crew conducts experiments in the area of biology, chemistry, medicine, physiology, physics, astronomy and meteorology, as well as testing spacecraft systems for future missions. The ISS orbits at between 278 and 460 kilometres above Earth and travels at an average speed of 27,744 km/h IRAN RAMPS UP SP ACE PROGRAM SPACE http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40110102/ ns/technology_and_science-space/

Iran has its sights set on putting an astronaut on the moon by 2025, after becoming the first Islamic nation to put its own payload into space last year. But the grand goal of getting to the moon may be among the least of the benefits Iran expects to reap from its expanding space program. Iran's motivations for a space program are

most likely practical: developing possible ballistic missile technology and building international prestige as a message to friends and enemies alike, analysts say. 'They will clearly use dual-use technology for a military buildup, and as long as they at least dabble in human spaceflight, they get advantageous press coverage on that as well,' said Joan Johnson-Freese, professor of National Security Studies at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. Iran launched its first domestically built satellite in February 2009 and promises more satellite launches in 2011. It also has offered to help any other Muslim countries with developing their own space programs, according to a FAQ recently compiled by Tiffany Chow, a researcher at Secure World Foundation, a watchdog group based in Washington, D.C., that tracks space security issues. Such political signals may serve Tehran's purpose even if the country lacks the technical capabilities to back up its intentions, analysts said. 'Given the current state of Iran's launch capabilities, it is unlikely that they'd be able to develop a human spaceflight program and successfully send an Iranian to the moon by 2025,' Chow pointed out. Several earlier launch attempts by Iran appeared to fail despite the country's claims otherwise, according to the Secure World Foundation FAQ. The rocket technology involves a mix of North Korean and Soviet missile designs. The first launch attempt involved a twostage rocket named Safir ('Ambassador' in Farsi), with a dummy satellite, Aug. 17, 2008. The rocket failed shortly after liftoff, according to outside analysts. Confirmed success finally came with the launch of the Safir-2 rocket Feb. 3, 2009. That rocket placed an Omid satellite weighing some 44 to 60 pounds (20 to 27 kilograms) into low Earth orbit. The cube-shaped satellite is almost 16 inches (40 centimeters) on each side. Another launch attempt, this past February 2, involved a Kavoshgar ('Explorer') sounding rocket designed to climb just 62 miles (100 kilometers). The sounding rocket is designed to collect data rather than transport cargo and had a living payload consisting of two turtles, a worm and a rat that were supposed to parachute back down to safety. No solid proof of the launch's success ever emerged. Iran had played up the event by launching the rocket from the back of a military truck rather than one of the country's four designated space launch sites. The Defense Minister, Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, oversaw the launch and issued a warning that Iran would not tolerate 'any unpeaceful use (of space) by any country.' Such portrayals by Iran of its launches are in stark contrast to 'repeated delays in their

space program and failures not discussed,' according to Charles Vick, senior technical and policy analyst at GlobalSecurity.org. Iran announced it will launch its 89-footlong (27 meters) Simorgh rocket, also known as Phoenix, which has a liquid fuel propulsion system capable of carrying more than 220 pounds (100 kg) to an altitude of almost 311 miles (500 km). The Simorgh rocket can carry a new generation of Iranian satellites such as the Mesbah 'Lantern' cube satellite, which measures almost 20 inches (50 cm) on each side and weighs between 132 and 165 pounds. Mesbah-1 was originally designed and built by Italy and slated for launch by Russia. (Russia had built Iran's first commercial satellite, Sinah, and launched it Oct. 27, 2005.) But Russia reported that the Mesbah-1 satellite never arrived for launch, and in July 2009 it announced its refusal to launch any more Iranian satellites. Italy similarly refused to help. Mesbah-1 disappeared and has since been replaced by Mesbah-2, built by Iran largely using the Italian design. 'Some of Iran's domestic launch capabilities are indeed inspired by, and to some extent based on, foreign models and systems,' Chow told SPACE.com. 'Based on recent Iranian claims, though, it appears their newest launch vehicles and satellites are indigenously designed and constructed.' Iran's launch vehicles rely heavily upon North Korean and Chinese rocket or missile designs, which are in turn often derived from Soviet missiles, analysts say. 'Direct evidence of assistance, education and hardware transfer from the Chinese to the Iranian and North Korean defense and space (industries) has been witnessed on large scale within China's military industrial infrastructure,' Vick said in an e-mail. North Korea has been focusing mostly on missile development, as opposed to space, given their failures to achieve sustained orbit for any satellites, Vick noted. Meanwhile, Iran's ballistic missile program has been moving like 'gangbusters,' he added. But Vick compared the intentions behind China's five-year plan and Iran's three-year plan for space to the Apollo moon program of the 1960s. The Apollo and other U.S. civilian programs helped push ahead basic sciences and military technologies to keep the United States'several generations ahead of our adversaries,' Vick explained. Johnson-Freese suggested Iran sees a space program as a 'win-win from both the technical and techno-nationalistic political perspectives,' considering how missile and rocket development go hand-in-hand. Whether or not that gets them to the moon may be beside the point. 'The bottom line is, I think Iran's human spaceflight plans are mostly talk, but any part that isn't will be a bonus to them,' Johnson-Freese said.

ANCIENT HOT SPRINGS SPOTTED ON MARS JPL, http://www.universetoday.com/77090/ ancient-hot-springs-spotted-on-mars/

Evidence of a past 'hot spring' environment on Mars has shown up in images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Scientists say light-colored mounds of hydrated silica on the side of a volcano are likely deposits from steam fumaroles, or hot springs, which may have provided a habitable environment on the Red Planet about three billion years ago. Concentrations of hydrated silica have been identified on Mars previously, including an ancient hot springs environment that the Spirit rover stumbled across in 2007. 'The heat and water required to create this deposit probably made this a habitable zone,' said J.R. Skok from Brown University, lead author of a paper about these findings published online today by Nature Geoscience. 'If life did exist there, this would be a promising type of deposit to entomb evidence of it - a microbial mortuary.' While it is not direct evidence of life on Mars, it adds to the mounting evidence of past habitable environments for at least microbial life on the planet, and is the most intact ancient hot springs region ever found. This specific spot in the Syrtis Major volcanic region on Mars would have been hospitable to life when most of Mars was already dry and cold. Skok said, 'You have spectacular context for this deposit. It's right on the flank of a volcano. The setting remains essentially the same as it was when the silica was deposited.' The small cone rises about 100 meters (100 yards) from the floor of a shallow volcanic caldera named Nili Patera and covers about 50 kilometers (30 miles) of Syrtis Major, which is near Mars equator. The collapse of an underground magma chamber from which lava had emanated created the bowl, and subsequent lave flows tell a story of how the cone formed. 'We can read a series of chapters in this history book and know that the cone grew from the last gasp of a giant volcanic system,' said John Mustard, Skok's thesis advisor at Brown and a co-author of the paper. 'The cooling and solidification of most of the magma concentrated its silica and water content.' Silica can be dissolved, transported and concentrated by hot water or steam. Hydrated silica identified by the spectrometer in uphill locations - confirmed by stereo imaging - indicates that hot springs or fumaroles fed by underground heating created these deposits. Silica deposits around hydrothermal vents in Iceland are among the best parallels on Earth. Murchie said, 'The habitable zone would have been within and alongside the conduits carrying the heated water.' The volcanic activity that built the cone in Nili Patera appears to have happened more recently than the 3.7-billion-year or greater age of Mars' potentially habitable early wet environments recorded in clay minerals identified from orbit.

SOLAR SHIELD TO PROTECT POWER GRIDS FROM SUN STORMS http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/ 40089463/ns/technology_and_scienceinnovation/

NASA has devised a new tool in the battle against massive eruptions from the sun: an early warning system to protect electrical grids on Earth from extremely powerful solar storms. The new project, called Solar Shield, is designed to predict the severity of powerful sun storms at specific locations on Earth to help power companies plan responses and limit the potential damage to their equipment.

The chief target for NASA's Solar Shield are huge sun eruptions called coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, which can shoot off billions of tons of plasma and charged particles. The sun is currently going through a more active phase of its 11-year solar weather cycle. It has been emerging from a prolonged lull in activity and is expected to hit the peak of the current cycle in 2013. When the magnetic field associated with a CME encounters the Earths magnetic field, the two merge and an enormous amount of energy is transferred to the geomagnetosphere. This resulting current can affect astronauts or satellites in space, as well as commercial power grids. If the CME is strong enough, the grids can become overburdened or damaged. The resulting blackout could last anywhere from hours to months, depending on the amount of damage sustained. Strong CMEs are classified as low-frequency/ high-impact events, meaning that while they are rare, their consequences are farreaching, researchers said. A 2008 workshop by the National Research Councils Space Studies Board predicted that a 'severe geomagnetic storm scenario' would have societal and economic costs of up to $2 trillion in the first year alone, and recovery time ranging from four to 10 years. The project aims to minimize the effects by providing both short- and long-term predictions regarding impending CMEs. Today, scientists can tell when an ejection is headed towards Earth, but the data is

very generalized. Different power nodes are affected by the resulting magnetic storms in different ways. Part of this depends on the time of day; systems are more vulnerable during non-peak usage hours. Location also factors in. High latitude locations experience more dramatic impacts than their low latitude counterparts. Another factor is local geology; the resulting currents are affected by the ground conductivity. So each node faces a different level of risk, which Solar Shield aims to calculate. But how do they do it? It goes something like this: Once a coronal mass ejection is registered, data from the sun-watching observatories like the SOHO spacecraft and NASA's twin Stereo satellites allow the team to create a 3-D model and provide a relatively long-term prediction as to its arrival time, ranging anywhere from 24 to 48 hours. While the CME travels through space, the team uses the computers at Goddard's Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) to create generalized predictions. As the stream of particles moves closer to Earth, it passes NASA's Advanced Composition Explorer a space weather monitoring satellite about 30 to 60 minutes before reaching our planet. The ACE satellite collects real-time data, enabling the team to quickly refine and narrow their predictions. NASA then notifies the Electric Power Research Institutes Sunburst program with their results. Pulkkinen said the Solar Shield project is still in the experimental stage and more data meaning more solar activity observations will be needed to refine it. But he hopes that more individual power companies will be able to turn to the EPRI to receive both forecasts and real-time information for the approaching storm. Each node could then take the action it deems appropriate, based on localized predictions, NASA, he added.

FOO FIGHTERS ON THEIR BAND NAME http://www.clashmusic.com/news/foofighters-on-their-band-name

One of the biggest rock groups on the planet, Foo Fighters have been given cause to regret their choice of name. Speaking ahead of their British shows next summer, Dave Grohl revealed that had he given it more thought perhaps the band would have been called something more appropriate. 'Around the time that I recorded the first FF tape (that became the first record), I was reading a lot of books on UFO's. Not only is it a fascinating subject, but there's a treasure trove of band names in those UFO books!' he said. 'So, since I had recorded the first record by myself, playing all the instruments, but I wanted people to think that it was a group, I figured that FOO FIGHTERS (WW2 term for UFO's) might lead people to believe that it was more than just one guy. Silly, huh?' Continuing, Dave Grohl insisted that a more appropriate name could have been chosen. 'Had I actually considered this to be a career, I probably would have called it something else, because it's the stupidest band name in the world.'

imagination? Or does it provide living proof that dinosaurs still exist today in farflung and obscure little corners of the world. The Ropen (Demon-flyer) has terrified the people of Papua New Guinea for thousands of years, a monster of the skies that swoops down on its unsuspecting prey, often at night, and carries them off to its lair. The world is full of tales of mythical beasts (the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, the Yhetti) and expeditions costing millions of dollars have been carried out, often with the same result: little or no evidence, so the myth lives on. Not so with the Ropen, or Dimorphodon Pterosaur, the flying reptile which is supposed to have died out 65 million years ago with the rest of the dinosaurs, because, according to American-based researcher Terrence Aym, 'Eyewitness reports - collected by determined exploration teams seeking strong evidence of the creatures - have led serious researchers to the conclusion that two distinct animals exist'. Meet the Ropen and the smaller Duah, a relative. Eye-witness reports from teams of researchers go hand in hand with local folklore, telling of terrifying flying beasts with long beaks crammed with razorsharp teeth, a long tail with a flange on the end and huge bat-like wings. Now graphic real-time video evidence has been added, shot by intrepid researchers Jim Blume and David Woetzel, who have explored Papua New Guinea and several Pacific Isles. Scouring the region for their prey, they encountered what they were looking for: flying dinosaurs with wingspans of ten to fifteen feet (eye-witnesses say they can be much larger) and two different species which inhabit the dense forests and mountain regions of one of the remotest and least visited parts of the globe.
