aking on a house no one knew what to do with was a challenge TV presenter and personality Helen Skelton couldn’t resist – even though her husband Richie wasn’t a fan of the property. “It came on the market in June 2019 and he refused to even go and see it with me,” says Helen, who has recently been working on Channel 5’s Life on the Farm and BBC One’s Countryfile. “He considered it too small, and too much of a project. After that we must have seen every house for sale in our price bracket in Yorkshire, but nothing compared. It has a massive garden, and I had a vision of our sons growing up surrounded by all of this space. Plus, I knew the house had been loved and I could make it our own.” The couple were living in a new build nearby at the time, but it was always meant to be a temporary solution. “I went on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins and when I got out, Richie told me he’d put in an offer on the house as he knew nothing else would satisfy me, which was a lovely surprise,” she laughs. After getting the keys in February 2020, the couple quickly began to make plans. “It was obvious the downstairs needed to be one big, open space, so we had the wall between the kitchen and the living room taken down, plus a couple of others. We also took out the ceiling that had been put in at some stage and went for a vaulted roof to give us more height,” Helen says. When it came to the design, Helen wanted someone to help focus her ideas and was adamant that as far as possible, she wanted to use local tradespeople and quality suppliers. “I did the whole Pinterest and Instagram thing, but I didn’t want the rooms to look like everyone else’s,” she explains. “I like quirky details and interesting materials. I found Kelly Roden at Meliora Kitchens, Bedrooms and Bathrooms in Doncaster on Instagram and we just hit it off. She and her husband Leon are a young, dynamic couple – and they’re based in Yorkshire. They put huge amounts of care and attention into their clients and are endlessly patient. I’m sure Kelly must have been tearing her hair out at times.” When it came to creating the kitchen, a large island was a must for Helen. “Being brought up on a farm, the space was always busy,” she says.
