ABOUT THE COMPANY

BODYVOX

Led by Emmy Award-winning choreographers Jamey Hampton and Ashley Roland, BodyVox is known for its visual virtuosity, distinctive wit, and unique ability to combine dance, theater, and film into breathtaking productions rich in imagery, athleticism, and humor. Since its founding in 1997, BodyVox has toured to critical acclaim on stages around the world, developed nine award-winning films, 18 original shows and three operas, featuring more than 200 original dances.

Based in Portland, Oregon, BodyVox’s movement surges from a fascination with the endless possibilities of the human body in motion, informed by years of cross-training and layers of experience. Hampton and Roland are distinguished artists on the world stage, formed by their years working as creators and performers with innovative dance companies MOMIX, ISO Dance, and Pilobolus. BodyVox builds upon this tradition of excellence with a unique voice that is equally influenced by its Northwest roots and world view.

Adding to its full-evening shows and repertory pieces, BodyVox’s films have won numerous awards in national and international festivals. Modern Daydreams — composed of Treadmill Softly, Islands in the Sky, Unleashed, and Deere John — won the prestigious American Choreography Award for Outstanding Achievement in Short film in 2002.

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY

JAMEY HAMPTON (Artistic Director) has had a storied career in dance, theater, television, and film that has spanned four decades. Born in Portland, Oregon, he was a distinguished athlete in high school, receiving varsity letters in track and football. He attended Dartmouth College, where he was a competitive ski racer, rugby player, as well as rowing stroke on the freshman crew team. Dartmouth was also where Jamey began dancing in earnest, meeting Pilobolus Dance Theater while pursuing a BFA degree in theater. After Dartmouth, he danced with Pilobolus around the world for five years. He then helped form and danced with MOMIX from 1982-87, followed by ISO Dance from 1987-1995. In 1997, he formed BodyVox with his partner, Ashley Roland. Now in its 21st season, BodyVox is a vibrant and singular dance company known to audiences worldwide for its ebullient and deeply imaginative work.

ASHLEY ROLAND (Artistic Director) is a true American original. With an unparalleled imagination and an acuity in both choreography and theatrical effect, she creates work that is unbridled and unabashed, resonating deeply with audiences around the world. After attending North Carolina School of the Arts, Ashley helped form MOMIX, setting off on a string of international tours that took her to Paris, London, Tokyo, Rome, New York, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, and virtually every major city in the world. In 1987, she formed ISO Dance with her partner Jamey Hampton. ISO toured the world for seven years with a robust schedule, which included choreography for international fashion shows, arena rock productions, videos, and print ad campaigns. Ashley has collaborated with the preeminent dance photographer of our time, Lois

Greenfield, on thousands of still images. She co-founded BodyVox in 1997 with Jamey Hampton. Now in its 21st season, BodyVox reflects everything that Ashley is: Endlessly creative and truly unique.

ELENALUISA ALVAREZ (Performer) started her dance career in Peru with the Municipal Ballet of Lima. In college, she was mentored by Galina Panova before participating in the Masa program with KCDC in Israel. Returning to the U.S., Elenaluisa joined Bowen McCauley Dance Company and Vaught Contemporary Ballet, where she had the honor of performing at the Kennedy Center. She spent one season with Wonderbound in Denver before moving to Portland to join BodyVox. She has performed works by David Ingram, Lucy Bowen, Katie Vaught, Mats Ek, Rami Beer, Albert Galindo, Ilana Goldman, Sarah Tallman, and Garrett Ammon, among others.

SALVATORE BONILLA (Performer) is a Puerto Rico native who started their dance training in Mableton, Georgia, at their high school, and went on to receive a BFA from Meadows School of the Arts at SMU in 2017. They have done works by Adam Hougland, Bill T. Jones, Jose Limón, Ohad Naharin, Hofesh Schecter, and Joshua L. Peugh, and danced with Dark Circles Contemporary in Texas for a couple seasons while attending school. After a brief period living in Europe and exploring different techniques, they now reside happily in Portland with a new dance community.

BO BRINTON (Performer) was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and raised in Tucson, Arizona. He began his training at Arizona Ballet Theatre under the direction of Cecily Bressel and Norman Walker, and was awarded scholarships to attend summer programs at American Ballet Theatre in New York City and Alonzo King LINES Ballet in San Francisco. He continued his training at the School of Dance at the University of Arizona, where he learned and performed a variety of works choreographed by George Balanchine, Elizabeth George, and James Clouser. Upon graduating from the University of Arizona in 2016 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance, Bo accepted a position with Artifact Dance Project in Tucson, Arizona. The following year, he joined José Mateo Ballet Theatre in Boston for the company’s final repertory season. He then spent three seasons with San Diego Ballet, where he danced soloist roles in classical and contemporary works by artistic director Javier Velasco. Bo is excited to return for his second season with BodyVox!

ALICIA CUTAIA (Performer) is a celebrated dancer, instructor, choreographer, fire performer, and harness aerialist. She earned her BFA as a double major in classical ballet and jazz with honors from Point Park University in Pennsylvania. Cutaia’s training was furthered as a scholarship recipient at Hubbard Street Dance, North Carolina Dance Theater, and River North Dance Company. She has worked with and performed pieces by many renowned choreographers from all over the world including Lauren Edson, Jamey Hampton, Ashley Roland, Ron De Jesus, Gina Patterson, Lar Lubovitch, Louis Falco, Michael Foley, Keisha Lalama, Joel Hall, Lou Conte, Daniel Gwirtzman, Lynn Taylor-Corbett, Daniel Ezralow, Choo-San Goh, Alan Hineline, Harrison McEldowney, Kevin O’Day, Frances Patrelle, David Storey, Margo Sappington, Christian Holder, and Bianca Sapetto. Cutaia has spent more than 15 years touring internationally with professional

dance companies, acting as rehearsal director, costume manager, and company dancer with Eisenhower Dance Detroit, as well as a company dancer with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Giordano Jazz Dance (Chicago), and BodyVox. Along her journey, she fell in love with circus performance and became a professional fire dancer and harness aerialist, which she has performed in Portland and around the world.

ANNA ELLIS (Performer) excels at portraying bold, athletic, and theatrical roles. At age 7, she began dancing at Maranatha School of Dance in Fort Myers, Florida. After graduating from high school, she performed and toured with multiple companies in Texas, Mississippi, Illinois, and California, from 2011-2017. A few of those years were spent traveling around the country, creating dance films and performing in the music video SOS by Joseph. During that time she was also an instructor/choreographer at Pacific Ballet Conservatory and Riverpointe Dance Academy, where she served as co-director for several years. She moved to Portland in June 2021 and is thrilled to be with BodyVox for her second season.

THERESA HANSON (Performer) was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida, where she grew up dancing at Pofahl Studios. She continued her dance career with Dance Alive National Ballet in 2009 and advanced to soloist in 2012, performing repertoire such as Bolero, Rite of Spring, Scheherazade, Carmina Burana, and Balanchine’s Allegro Brilliante. Theresa moved to Orlando, Florida, in 2016, working as a commercial dancer and actor, including performing for Universal Orlando. In 2018, she moved to Portland and joined PDX Contemporary Ballet for one season before joining BodyVox. She is grateful to return for her fourth season!

DANIEL KIRK (Performer) is a founding member of BodyVox, with which he dances, tours, and has choreographed. With Eric Skinner, he co-founded the skinner|kirk DANCE ENSEMBLE, a contemporary dance company based in Portland, Oregon. Daniel has choreographed and performed for the Oregon Symphony, Inland Pacific Ballet, and was a founding member of Oregon Ballet Theatre. Daniel has extensive performance experience both nationally and internationally. His technique ranges from classical ballet to contemporary to innovative theatrical and aerial work.

MITCHELL ROSE (Filmmaker) is a frequent collaborator with BodyVox — they have now created 12 films together. But prior to becoming a filmmaker, Mitchell was a choreographer specializing in comedic work. The New York Times called him, "A rare and wonderful talent." Eventually he was drawn more to visual media and entered the American Film Institute in Hollywood as a Directing Fellow. Since AFI, his films have won 57 awards and are screened around the world on television and in locations as diverse as the Getty Museum and the CBS JumboVision in Times Square.
