Program Notes Symphony in C Major Maksym Berezovsky Born October 16, 1745 in Hlukhiv, Ukraine; died March 24, 1777 in St. Petersburg, Russia After training as a singer during his childhood in Ukraine, Maksym Berezovsky became a leading vocal soloist at the imperial court in Saint Petersburg while still a teenager. He was able to study composition there with two Venetian composers who had been lured to Russia by the opera-loving Catherine the Great, and he was later sent to continue his education in Italy, where he became the first known student of East Slavic origins to receive formal music training in Western Europe after he enrolled at the Accademia Filarmonica in Bologna. While in Italy, Berezovsky became the first composer from his part of the world to write an Italian opera seria, using a warhorse of a libretto by Metastasio. (More than 70 other composers wrote operas using the same text, including Vivaldi and Gluck.) Berezovsky’s Symphony in C Major, also the first from a Ukrainian or Russian, might have originated as the overture to that opera, since it conforms perfectly to the three-part formula for an Italian sinfonia (their term for overture), a forerunner of the Classical symphony in three or four longer movements. Berezovsky was regarded highly enough in Italy that his opera was staged at least twice before he left in 1773, and presumably it was at this time that a copy of the C major symphony/overture ended up in the Vatican archives, where it was only rediscovered in 2002. Sadly, he encountered a much icier reception when he returned to Saint Petersburg, perhaps as a result of the Empress’s bias against Ukrainians and preference for foreign composers, and he is believed to have taken his own life four frustrating years later, at the age of 31.

Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor, Op. 23 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Born May 7, 1840 in Kamsko-Votkinsk, Russia; died November 6, 1893 in St. Petersburg, Russia The piano concerto that Tchaikovsky composed during the winter of 1874-75 was his first work for soloist and orchestra. He was not a virtuoso pianist himself, so he arranged to show the score to Nikolai Rubinstein, the leading conductor and pianist in Moscow and a fellow faculty member at the Moscow Conservatory. Years later, Tchaikovsky summarized Rubinstein’s blunt feedback in a letter: “My concerto, it turned out, was worthless and unplayable.” Tchaikovsky wasn’t always the most self-confident composer, but this time he stood his ground, vowing to “publish the work exactly as it stands.” To secure a first performance, Tchaikovsky went outside Rubinstein’s circle and solicited the famous German conductor and pianist Hans von Bülow, who loved the work and asked for a set of parts that he could take with him on tour. Thus it came to

pass that this landmark Russian concerto first reached the public in Boston, in October of 1875. Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto begins with an audacious introduction, heralded by a four-note horn theme. The piano soloist enters with a majestic series of chords, but that grand gesture actually turns out to be a form of accompaniment to support a soaring melody from the violins. The notable (and sometimes baffling) aspect of this work is that this priceless introductory material never returns. Instead, the fast body of the movement strikes up a melody that Tchaikovsky once heard sung by a blind Ukrainian beggar. The middle movement continues the charming incongruities. It begins with a graceful flute solo over pizzicato accompaniment, flowing at a relaxed tempo marked andantino semplice. Flecks of off-key harmonies prepare the antics of the manic contrasting section, speeding by at a breakneck prestissimo pace and quoting a popular French song. The finale also references outside music, with the bouncy main theme adapted from a Ukrainian folk song.

Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Op. 74 (“Pathétique”) Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky In 1892, Tchaikovsky endeavored to write a “grand symphony” and nearly completed one in the key of E-flat before scrapping it that December and redirecting some material to the Third Piano Concerto. He then started fresh in February 1893 with what became the Symphony No. 6 in B Minor. Addressing his nephew, Tchaikovsky explained that “the form of this symphony will have much that is new, and, by the way, the finale will not be a noisy allegro, but, on the contrary, a long, drawn-out adagio.” Tchaikovsky died just nine days after he conducted the premiere of his Sixth Symphony. In that interval, he wrote to his friend and publisher Petr Jurgensen that the symphony “produced some bewilderment” among the audience, and he thought it would help to add the subtitle “Pathétique,” suggested by his brother Modest. That French word—the same descriptor Beethoven applied to his Eighth Piano Sonata—suggests music of deep feeling and pathos, without the stinging connotations of the English word “pathetic.” The second performance, staged weeks later at a memorial service, garnered a very different response: In the wake of the composer’s abrupt and mysterious death at the age of 53, listeners began to project onto the music a tragic personal narrative rife with suicidal overtones, associations that linger to this day. The Sixth Symphony begins ominously, with a slow introduction featuring bassoon and low strings. Their rising and falling motive morphs into the main theme of the movement’s fast body, and later, with the motive’s contours flipped to fall first and then rise to a state of equilibrium, it elongates into the contrasting theme, providing an island of repose within this unsettled movement. The Allegro con grazia second movement features the irregular time signature of 5/4 (five quarter-notes per measure). This “limping waltz” flows with surprising

smoothness and grace considering the irregular meter, attesting to Tchaikovsky’s special knack for dance music that served him so well in his ballets and operas. The third movement spins through a dizzy introduction to reach a jolly march tune that starts in the clarinets, setting a course that culminates in a bombastic conclusion. Had this marked the end of the symphony, it would have put it in a class with Tchaikovsky’s Fourth and Fifth, which both progressed from fateful minor keys to valedictory major keys along the lines of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. But the Sixth Symphony charts a very different path, reaching its emotional crest in a slow and mournful finale. The first poignant chords reestablish the brooding mood from the symphony’s initial introduction, making that link explicit by returning to a texture of bassoon and strings. The melody attempts a long climb into a more optimistic resolution in D major, only to snap back into B minor, and then the low brass instruments intone a mournful knell. One last gasp of the descending melody follows, fading to a whisper from the cellos and basses. It’s no wonder that audiences have clung to the idea that Tchaikovsky was foreshadowing his death with this symphony. He couldn’t have written a more impactful swan song. — Program notes © Aaron Grad, 2019

The National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine Volodymyr Sirenko, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Theodore Kuchar, Conductor Laureate Formed by the Council of Ministers of Ukraine in November of 1918, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine is considered one of the finest symphony orchestras in Eastern Europe. Its first conductor was Oleksander Horilyj, and Natan Rachlin was the Artistic Director of the Orchestra from 1937 until 1962. Stefan Turchak, Volodymyr Kozhuchar, Fedir Hlushchenko, Igor Blazhkov, and Theodore Kuchar subsequently conducted the Orchestra as its Principal Conductors. Other conductors who worked with the NSOU include Leopold Stokowski, Igor Markevitch, Kurt Sanderling, Evgeny Mravinsky, Kiril Kondrashin, Evgeny Svetlanov, and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. Soloists who performed with the NSOU include Artur Rubinstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Isaac Stern, David Oistrakh, Sviatoslav Richter, Mstislav Rostropovich, Emil Gilels, Leonid Kogan, Gidon Kremer, OlehKrysa, Monserrat Caballe, Jose Carreras, and Juan Diego Flores. The NSOU was entrusted with the premier performances of the works of the following composers: Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich, Aram Khatchaturian, Boris Lyatoshynsky, Valentyn Silvestrov, Myroslav Skoryk, and Evgen Stankovych. The Orchestra has gained international recognition over a remarkably short period of time. After an appearance in Moscow, Dmitri Shostakovich commented: “This orchestra has as distinguished a group of performers as one would be likely to find anywhere. The ensemble of the orchestra is of the highest level. In

addition, the various soloists and instrumental groups within the Orchestra play exceptionally and complement each other beautifully—as would the greatest of the world’s symphony orchestras.” Since 1993, the NSOU has released more than 100 sound recordings that include both Ukrainian and international repertoires. Most of these recordings have received the highest international acclaim. In 1994, the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC) rated NSOU’s recording of Boris Lyatoshynsky’s Symphonies No. 2 and No. 3 as The Best Recording of the Year. The CD of Silvestrov’s Requiem for Larissa was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005. The CD of Bloch and Lees’ Violin Concertos was nominated for a Grammy Award four years later. The NSOU has performed in successful concert tours throughout Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Belarus, China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, England, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates. “A program rich with energy and unusually adventurous placed the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine in a highly favorable light when it gave its only Sydney concert during its Australian tour on Friday. This is an orchestra with many virtues. Its strings can conjure up a vibrant songfulness; the woodwinds have a fruity, penetrating ripeness; the brass could endanger the walls of Jericho; the percussion might wake the dead.” — The Sydney Morning Herald Since April of 1999, Volodymyr Sirenko has been the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the NSOU. Since June of 2006, Alexander Hornostai has been its Managing Director and Producer. www.nsou.com.ua

Volodymyr Sirenko Volodymyr Sirenko was born in the Poltava region of Ukraine. Through his conducting success, he has been compared by the international press to other brilliant conductors. Straight No Chaser Straight No Chaser has had an amazing decade. Ten years after turning a collegiate hobby into a recording career that has taken them around the world on tour, the a cappella group tells its story through music on One Shot. Their seventh LP features 16 genre-spanning songs, and 10 entertaining conversational interludes, as the members of Straight No Chaser trace their unlikely rise from an undergraduate singing group at Indiana University to a beloved Atlantic Records act with a devoted international fan base. Along the way, Straight No Chaser has sold more than 1.6 million albums in the U.S. and amassed more than 100 million YouTube views thanks to tightly arranged songs, impeccable vocal harmonies, and a healthy sense of humor. Yet Straight No Chaser’s success was never a given—these singers worked hard to make the most of an unexpected opportunity when they signed with Atlantic and released their first album, Holiday Spirits, in 2008. Recorded mostly in Bloomington, Indiana, with producer Steve Lunt, the track list for One Shot reflects that sense of now or never, starting with opener and first single Motownphilly/This Is How We Do It, an energetic mash-up of Boyz II Men and Montell Jordan. Straight No Chaser made Jordan’s This Is How We Do It a staple of its repertoire in college. Motownphilly, with its lyrics about chasing improbable success, captures the way the singers felt as undergrads. “The lyrics from the Boyz II Men song fit our experience: We dreamed about this and now we are doing it, performing all over the world,” says Randy Stine, an original member. It took a few years. After the founding members of Straight No Chaser graduated in 1999, they got jobs, found love, and made lives for themselves as

new undergrads replaced them in the group on campus. Then, in 2006, Stine posted a clip on YouTube of Straight No Chaser singing The 12 Days of Christmas at a 1998 performance, and it went viral. Atlantic Records Chairman and CEO Craig Kallman saw it and contacted the guys to see if they would be interested in reuniting to make an album. It wasn’t necessarily an easy decision. “It was scary to jump into because we were giving up life as we knew it,” Stine says. “I envisioned it as a boat leaving the pier,” he says. “Either you’re going to jump on and make the boat or you’re not. And I thought, ‘Even if the boat sinks and I have to swim back to shore, so be it.’” Far from sinking, the group has only picked up speed on the way to making One Shot. “Every year it gets better and better,” says Tyler Trepp. “We keep surprising ourselves in a good way, and it just keeps growing.” Along with Stine and Trepp, the current lineup features Walter Chase, Jerome Collins, Seggie Isho, Michael Luginbill, Charlie Mechling, Steve Morgan, and David Roberts. They all have a hand in choosing songs that mirror the singers’ widespread musical tastes, ranging from R&B and old-school funk to folk and classic rock. In addition to Motownphilly/This Is How We Do It, the group tackles Ricky Martin’s Livin’ La Vida Loca, Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way, James Brown’s Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag, and Percy Sledge’s When a Man Loves a Woman, a soulful ode to the singers’ significant others. There’s also a take on Loverboy’s Working for the Weekend, Johnny Cash’s version of I’ve Been Everywhere, and a yearning for the comforts of family life on a richly harmonized version of Simon and Garfunkel’s Homeward Bound. “We all rallied around that song because it really spoke to life on tour,” Stine says. “We are loving what we’re doing, but there’s always a bit of you that’s missing home. Especially with all of us being parents now, it’s that much tougher when you leave.” So much of what Straight No Chaser has done over the past 10 years is the stuff of dreams: They’ve collaborated with Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Dolly Parton, to name a few. They’ve performed on national TV early in the morning, on Today; and long after dark, on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. They’ve toured North America, Europe, and Australia, and consistently rank among Pollstar’s top 100 touring acts in North America. “We literally have to pinch ourselves every day that this actually happened,” Collins says. “Now we’re 10 years still in the game, and we’re still a successful act. We started this just for fun and now we’re doing it as a career.” They have no intention of stopping—it’s just too much fun. “We’re going to ride this train,” Trepp says. “Each tour is something new, and we’re always surprised at the things we get to do.”

BÉLA FLECK & THE FLECKTONES featuring Victor Wooten, Roy “Futureman” Wooten, and Howard Levy Groundbreaking, Grammy-winning quartet Béla Fleck & The Flecktones will be celebrating its 30th anniversary with a North American tour. Banjoist Béla Fleck, harmonica and keyboardist Howard Levy, bassist Victor Wooten, and percussionist/drumitarist Roy “Future Man” Wooten, have been creating some of the most forward-thinking music during their long, storied career. While all manners of genres come into play—from classical and jazz to bluegrass and African music to electric blues and Eastern European folk dances—the result is an impossible-to-pigeonhole sound all their own, a meeting of musical minds that remains, as ever, utterly indescribable. Simply put, it is The Flecktones: music made only when these four individuals come together. “All the different things I do come together to make a new ‘hybrid’ Béla,” Fleck says. “Everybody else in the group is doing the same things, collaborating with different people and pursuing a wide variety of ideas, so when we come together and put all of our separate soups into one big stockpot it turns into a very diverse concoction.” Fleck first united the Flecktones in 1988, ostensibly for a single performance on PBS’ Lonesome Pine Special. From the start, there was a special kinship between the four musicians, a bond forged in a mutual passion for creativity and artistic advancement. Three breakthrough albums and a whole lot of live dates followed before Levy decided to move on in late 1992. “I wanted to do other things and there was no time to do anything else,” he explains. “We were probably playing 150 shows a year at that time, maybe more, and it was just too much for me. I’ve never, before or since, done any one thing that much!” Béla Fleck & The Flecktones persevered, playing as a trio and with many special guests, before saxophonist Jeff Coffin joined the ensemble. A succession of acclaimed albums and innumerable live performances continued to earn the band a fervent fan following around the world, not to mention five Grammy Awards in a range of categories. Still, by 2008, the band had grown somewhat restive and embarked on a temporary hiatus. The seeds of change began with what Future Man calls the “paintbrushes of fate” as Coffin was invited to join Dave Matthews Band after the 2008 death of saxophonist LeRoi Moore. Fleck encouraged him to accept, believing the decision would rejuvenate both DMB and the Flecktones themselves. “We were ready for something different to happen,” he says. “We’d been in a kind of holding pattern. We had the same lineup for so many years that it was becoming ‘normal.’ We were all drifting into outside things for new musical invigoration, and we were taking more and more time off between albums and tours.” Each member had been quite busy with a variety of successful projects. Béla’s included duet collaborations with Chick Corea, a trio with Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer (sometimes with the Detroit Symphony), and expansive adventures

in African music, documented in the acclaimed 2009 film and CD, Throw Down Your Heart. Victor had done solo band tours, camps, recording sessions, clinics, and CD releases (including an incredible collaborative project with Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller called SMV, which yielded the album Thunder), and Future Man created his amazing Black Mozart project and continued development of new instruments. Still, all agree that Flecktones’ music was beckoning them home. The band, which had always maintained a warm relationship with the gifted pianist/ harmonica player, recruited Howard Levy for a 2009 tour of the U.S. and Europe, an experience he describes as “extremely invigorating and very energizing.” “It felt just like it did back when we first started playing together,” says Wooten. “Just with a lot less hair.” Upon the tour’s conclusion, the four musicians agreed to further explore the band’s possibilities, sensing what Future Man calls “an opportunity to revisit the original scene of the crime.” “There were a lot of unfinished aspects to this lineup of the band,” Fleck notes, “in that it stopped right when we were peaking creatively.” For Fleck, Levy’s return enables the Flecktones to follow through on the original concept of a band “where each person was reinventing their instruments, where every one of us was a kind of mutant.” “There’s a special thing that happens when the four of us get together and play,” notes Levy. “We all have the same attitude of trying to do things that we haven’t done before and coincidentally, no one else has either.” One thing was certain, however. The ‘original’ Flecktones were resolute that their reunion would not be rooted in nostalgia. The goal from the get-go was to drive the music forward to places where it might’ve progressed had things gone differently. “When we play together, Victor, Future Man, and I all have to step up our game,” Fleck says, “because Howard is going to throw something unexpected at us,

which in certain ways, puts us in an uncomfortable zone, but due to that, we have to push through—into our higher selves.” “In my mind, the instrument is there to allow the musician to feel something and to express themselves,” Wooten says. “The music doesn’t come from the instrument, it comes from the musician. Whatever instrument allows you to express yourself the way you want to at that moment is the one you should play.” That said, Future Man took the occasion to unveil a new prototype Drumitar, his MIDI-based device that allows him to trigger samples using his fingers. A central element of the Flecktones sound, the first version of the notorious instrument was on its last legs after more than two decades. More significantly, new advances in technology allowed for the creation of a Drumitar more in line with the drummer’s vision, featuring better dynamics and the ability to record his own spectrum of drum samples. “Twenty years later, the fruit is really ripe,” Future Man says. “There are things that I was trying to do back then, but the sounds just weren’t good enough. Now it’s actually swinging the way I always wanted it to swing.” For many Flecktones fans, the return of the original lineup allows a chance to see a band that many had never gotten to witness before. Indeed, a certain segment of the band’s base discovered them during the Jeff Coffin era and may not even be familiar with Levy’s membership. “There are people who don’t remember the very beginning of the Flecktones,” Future Man says. “It’s like people that started watching Star Trek: The Next Generation and never got to meet Captain Kirk. So here we go, the original crew of the Enterprise coming together on a new mission.” Visionary and vibrant as anything in their already rich canon, Rocket Science feels more like a new beginning than simply the culmination of an early chapter. Where the band goes from here remains undetermined, but all four members agree that the promise of Béla Fleck & the Original Flecktones has yet to be fulfilled. “We’re going to have to have this experience together and see how everybody likes it,” Fleck says. “I know that we haven’t even come close to exhausting the possibilities with this record, but we sure went deeper than we ever had before.”
