umans all have an innate drive to gather around performance. It’s part of what makes us who we are. Whether it’s prehistoric communities gathering around a fire with primitive instruments, packed arenas for Top 40 pop stars, or commuters watching a busker as they wait for the train, we are drawn to these collective experiences. We see it as our duty to provide connection and kinship through the love of artistry. Spaces that are open and welcoming to all and are cultural touchstones for the greater Gainesville area. But beyond that, we also serve to increase the artistic enrichment of this community, by reaching out beyond the stage to bring performance to our neighbors. The world can be a complicated and divisive place, but performance unifies people in a way nothing else can. This is why we are here, and these are the experiences we want to share with you.
our venues Our four venues are designed to provide you with the best possible experience by catering to the unique needs of every performance.

tomáš Kubínek Friday, september 7, 2018 | 7:30 p.m. | phillips center
raucous, maniacally Funny Tomáš kubínek is unhinged. it’s okay to say that. after all, the man calls himself a “certified lunatic.” That lunacy brings with it a brilliant mind, sharp wit, and astonishing athleticism that make kubínek’s particular brand of comedy shine. ages 10 to 100 will love his brand of comedy. From slapstick clowning to clever banter with audience members, from music to hand magic, kubínek is able to split sides without doing it at other people’s expense...well except maybe his own. piT | $35

teatr-pralnia with cca dakh Tuesday, october 2 and Wednesday, october 3, 2018 7:30 p.m. | squitieri studio Theatre
super-charged puppeT cabareT Teatr-pralnia with cca dakh is a snapshot of the emotions and sensibilities in modern ukraine. ukraine is a geographic stress point...and her people feel it. you might not expect this environment to foster an insanely-colorful, energetic puppet cabaret using clever songs, real time events and Facebook feeds, iconic ukrainian poetry, and improvisation, but that’s exactly what it has done. This audaciously wild, adultonly performance questions today’s atmosphere as through the eyes of children: asking bold, uncomfortable questions that encourage audience members to analyze their own worldview and provide insight into the minds of a people who are often forgotten. reserved | $30

Friday, october 5, 2018 | 7:30 p.m. | phillips center at first, it’s hard to believe that at 36 years old Jonny lang has already had a successful career for two decades. but when you get your first platinum record at 15 and a grammy at age 26, while sharing the stage with legends like b.b. king and buddy guy, believing is pretty easy. his unmistakable talent sets him apart as one of the best live performers and blues guitarists of his generation, a place he has held strong through the years. and with years comes experience. For a true artist like lang, that experience translates into great songs, something his 2017 album signs firmly backs up. Fans who discovered Jonny lang through his searing instrumental work will revel in the huge guitar tones and go-for-broke solos on signs, while those who have appreciated his growth as an honest and passionate songwriter will find that honesty and passion unabated. one thing we know is, it’s going to be great to hear it live. piT | $45

ranky tanky Thursday, october 11, 2018 | 7:30 p.m. | phillips center
Work iT! geT Funky! The word gullah is derived from a West african term for “a people blessed by god.” it refers to not only the people, but the culture and music of the south carolina lowlands. native south carolinians, ranky Tanky (loosely translated as “Work it!” or “get funky!”), bring to life the soulful songs of the gullah culture, melding them with elements of jazz, gospel, funk, and r&b. Their breakout performance in 2017 on npr’s Fresh air is a must hear. actors from the london stage — Hamlet Friday, october 12 and saturday, october 13, 2018 | 7:30 p.m. squitieri studio Theatre
Five acTors and a skull actors from the london stage performs shakespeare’s hamlet word-for-word from the original, but instead of a cast of dozens, they do it with just five actors. it is traditional shakespeare performed in an inventive way. but make no mistake, this is not a new interpretation, this is hamlet. Five incredibly versatile actors play multiple roles, weaving together dialogues, and switching between characters all while maintaining a clear narrative that is true to the original. it sounds like madness but there’s a method in it and it works. reserved | $40

Quartet assad: Music of Migration Thursday, november 1, 2018 | 7:30 p.m. | phillips center
TalenT runs in The Family brazilian-born, grammy-winning brothers and guitarists sérgio and odair assad join family members badi and clarice for an exceptional evening of brazilian folk music, with original compositions, and a nod to their lebanese heritage. While sérgio and odair have become international superstars in the world of guitar— working with such renowned artists as yo-yo ma, romero lubambo, and dawn upshaw—badi assad has been lauded for her category-defying work as an extraordinary singer, guitarist, and percussionist. and let’s not forget about sergio’s daughter, clarice. a composer, pianist, and singer, she has been performing professionally since the age of seven, with works commissioned by carnegie hall, the chamber music society of lincoln center, and the vail music Festival. it’s quite rare for one family to be bursting at the seams with such talent and acclaim and even rarer to see them all on one stage. piT | $45

the capitol steps monday, november 5, 2018 | 7:30 p.m. | phillips center
make america grin again a uF performing arts tradition, The capitol steps will return to the phillips center the night before the mid-term election. What started as a group of senate staffers setting out to lampoon the very people and places who employed them, has grown into a national treasure of farcical proportions. They have been digging into the headlines of the day for over 30 years, and creating song parodies and skits with their special brand of satirical humor. most cast members have worked on capitol hill; some for democrats, some for republicans, and others for those who straddle the fence. but no matter who or what is in the headlines, you can be sure this group will tackle all sides of the political spectrum. piT | $50 orchesTra a-p/meZZanine/loWer boXes | $50 orchesTra Q-Z/upper boXes | $40 balcony | $30 uF sTudenTs | $10

education outreach
p
erforming arts have a tremendous impact on the lives of people who have the privilege to witness them. We take our cultural responsibilities to the community seriously and understand that there are barriers for engaging in the arts, be they physical, financial, or otherwise.
This is where our education outreach program comes in, expanding our impact and accessibility both within and beyond the walls of our venues. Through multiple initiatives, we provide numerous creative and educational opportunities to members throughout our community. classroom visits bring performers from our presented season into local school classrooms. These experiences are tailored to perfectly fit the class focus. These engagements range from in-depth lectures to lively classroom performances filled with dancing graderschoolers. master classes give students access to gain the knowledge and insight they need to channel their creativity. uF performing arts master classes provide students the opportunity for deep, personal instruction and interaction with world-renowned professional artists. school-day performances fill the phillips center with k-12 students. For many students, this is their first time experiencing the live performing arts in a professional hall. Thanks to grant and private funding support, the artist fees, facility fees, and even school bus costs associated with the performance are covered, which means there is no charge to the student or school. performance discussions are held 45 minutes prior to a performance or immediately following and feature artists, uF professors, subject matter experts, and performers who directly engage with the audience, providing context and insight into the performances and creative process.
For more information on education outreach opportunities, contact derek Wohlust at 352.273.2464 or dwohlust@performingarts.ufl.edu. These opportunities would not be possible without the continued support of private donors. if you are interested in supporting education outreach at uFpa, please contact shannon sumerlin, director of development, at 352.273.2480 or ssumerlin@performingarts.ufl.edu.
adam strauss: inside ocd
T
he mushroom cure tells the true story of adam strauss’ quest to treat his obsessive compulsive disorder with psilocybin—the active ingredient in psychedelic mushrooms. a raw, hilarious, and incredibly human piece about the struggles we all face, the show was one of our most important performances of the 2017-18 season — not just because of the powerful story and acting by strauss, but because of his commitment to affecting lives beyond the stage. in addition to performing two shows in the squitieri studio Theatre, the stand up comic-turned-dramatist accepted an artist residency, where he worked with uF staff and faculty specializing in the field of health and medicine. a meeting was held in July where the start of an exciting endeavor was sparked by Jeffrey pufahl and kimberlee campbell-smith from the center for arts in medicine.
pufahl and campbell-smith joined uF performing arts in creating a collaborative storytelling event, composed of people who live with an ocd diagnosis, their family members, and a clinician from the ocd clinic. With the help of carol mathews at the center for ocd, anxiety, and related disorders, this group was assembled, and over the course of ten weeks worked on developing their personal stories. The result of this initiative became the performance inside ocd: i am not my illness. strauss attended the first workshop and checked in throughout the development process eventually returning to gainesville to host the performance to a full house in the squitieri studio Theatre.
inside ocd was more profound and moving than any of us could have imagined, an evening where members of our community came together to hear and learn from each other. This is the magic we’re always chasing at uFpa, and something we’re enormously proud to have helped bring about. a testament to the importance of this work is the national recognition it has received, with an invitation to participate in the 25th annual ocd conference in Washington, d.c. This exceptional group of members in our community will present their stories, and their inventive way of sharing them, to health professionals, researchers, and individuals with ocd from all around the world. What started with a meeting in a small room at shands hospital has grown into something much greater, transforming lives along the way.

Kristin chenoweth Tuesday, January 29, 2019 | 7:30 p.m. | phillips center
QuesTion: Who doesn’T love krisTin chenoWeTh? answer: no one. everyone loves kristin chenoweth, because she’s astonishing. Whether she’s delighting audiences as glinda the good Witch in Wicked on broadway, or lighting up the screen as olive snook on pushing daisies and the personification of easter on american gods, she’s a scene-stealer. but there won’t be any need for stealing on this night...it’s all kristin, singing songs and recalling her experiences from the stage and screen. a full list of kristin’s awards and accolades would fill this entire guide. let’s just say she has a lot of them and they are all well deserved. piT | $75 orchesTra a-p and meZZanine | $75 balcony | $45 uF sTudenTs | $10

complexions contemporary ballet: star dust Thursday, January 31, 2019 | 7:30 p.m. | phillips center
a love leTTer To david boWie That’s how complexions Founder/artistic director dwight rhoden describes it. The former alvin ailey dancer, who has created works for ailey, dance Theatre of harlem, new york city ballet, and other major companies, created star dust in order to thank bowie for the energy, passion, and stories he brought into the world. complete with Ziggy stardust-inspired glam rock makeup and costumes, this evening length, ballet tribute brings a career-spanning set list of bowie’s chameleonic song to life—from the folk rock of the ’70s to the upbeat popfunk of the ’80s to the melancholy indie rock released shortly before his death. These agile dancers of different races and cultures remind us how dance connects us with our humanity. orchesTra a-p/meZZanine/loWer boXes | $40 orchesTra Q-Z/upper boXes | $30

Thursday, February 7, 2019 | 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. | upstage led by Texas songwriters colin brooks, gordy Quist, and ed Jurdi, this band fuses lone star blues, rock, and soul sounds. duende means, “a quality of passion and inspiration.” it’s also the title of The band of heathens’ fifth studio album. The title was chosen to emphasize the group’s collective search for connection and communion in a technology-fueled world increasingly splintered, distracted, and lonely. The term “americana” could have been invented to describe The band of heathens’ approach, which has mutated almost as much as the genre. With a discography that lives up to the high ideals of the band, their journey has been marked by stylistically diverse efforts, always taking a leap beyond the last. Their arsenal of songs is filled with southern rock, stoned soul, heartland country, and all points between. general admission
