<elemento obrigatório> Before the construction of roads in regions with the potential for natural underground cavities, it is necessary to prospect, identify and characterize the degree of relevance of each cavity found, in order to then assess the risks of impacts to the speleological heritage and its respective area of influence. Brazilian legislation establishes that studies to determine the area of influence must be carried out and in the absence of these studies, a distance of 250 meters to this area is assumed, starting from the contour in superficial convex projection. In the technical field, there is still debate about the adoption of an objective method to determine the structural safety limit of the cavities impacted by the construction and operation of highways, as well as the validity of the establishment of a standard distance that ensures this safety. This research started from the hypothesis that it would be possible to determine a structural safety zone for the possible impacts caused by the implantation and operation of a highway in an area composed of carbonate karst systems. The case study was carried out in an unpaved segment of the BR-135 / BA highway, in the municipality of São Desiderio, in western Bahia. The region is considered of high speleological potential due to the geological context, of a substrate formed by neoproterozoic limestone rocks of the Bambuí Group, underlying the cretaceous sandstones of the Urucuia Group. To test the hypothesis, well-known geophysical prospecting methods were used, combined with geotechnical analyzes. In order to conserve the speleological heritage, processes for monitoring the effects caused by the construction and operation of the highway were considered, thus establishing a kind of protocol or routine for monitoring control parameters, in addition to those already established in rules and laws that govern civil construction, which is essential to assess the effectiveness of the protection strategies adopted. The information obtained helps in the decision-making of Organs environmental agencies regarding the environmental licensing processes for road and similar works, for the correct occupation of the soil, protection of the speleological patrimony and preparation of the financial and temporal planning of the enterprise, as well as its operation. Keywords: geological heritage, geoconservation, structural protection area.
