40 Under 40 In preparation for the 2013 40 Under 40 Awards Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 19, the Alumni Association hosted the inaugural 40 Under 40 Nominee & Past Honoree Gathering at Fado Irish Pub in Atlanta. On June 6, more than 100 former honorees and the 2013 nominees networked with each other before the Class of 2013 was announced in early July. The event was made possible thanks to generous Georgia Fund donations by the Host Committee, which included:

Reaching New Heights UGA Welcomes 22nd President

"My focus will be very direct and very clear: I will focus on our students and the core academic mission of the University – if our academic core is very strong, the entire university also will be very good."

Jere W. Morehead became the University of Georgia's 22nd president on July 1, 2013, having previously served as UGA's senior vice president for academic affairs and provost since 2010. “Becoming President of the University of Georgia is a dream come true for a UGA graduate who has spent more than half of his life on this campus,” said Morehead. His career covers a wide range of faculty and administrative roles, including vice president for instruction, vice provost for academic affairs, associate provost and director of the Honors Program, and acting executive director of legal affairs. President Morehead is the Meigs Professor of Legal Studies in the Terry College of Business, where he has held a faculty appointment since 1986. Morehead also directed UGA Law School's Advocacy Program from 1986 to 1995 and coached numerous moot court teams. He has received several University-wide teaching awards, including UGA’s highest honor for teaching excellence. A native of Lakeland, Fla., Morehead moved with his family to Atlanta as a teenager. He earned his undergraduate degree from Georgia State University. He is a 1980 graduate of the UGA School of Law where he earned his J.D. degree. President Morehead notes: “It is especially humbling as an alumnus to serve as the leader of this great institution… Many people have asked me what I hope to accomplish as the 22nd President of UGA. My focus will be very direct and very clear: I will focus on our students and the core academic mission of the University – if our academic core is very strong, the entire university also will be very good. American public higher education was established here in 1785, and we have been entrusted with that legacy. Let’s get to work.”

hen it comes to Atlanta, alumna Tucker Berta is in the know. From new restaurant openings to the trendiest fashion boutiques, she has her finger on the pulse of this ever-moving city. Berta is something of a Renaissance woman with a career pendulum swinging from fundraising, marketing and public relations, editorial work, to promoting the arts and culinary scene. Berta is greatly responsible for putting Serenbe, a community 30 miles south of Atlanta, on the map. As its director of communications from 2005 to 2011, she promoted the community’s sustainability principles, residential homes, three restaurants, organic farms, boutique inn, shops, and art galleries, scoring them impressive editorial coverage in New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, CNN, and countless national and regional magazines. Prior to pitching media for Serenbe, Berta was a part of the media—she was associate editor at Jezebel Magazine, followed by editor-in-chief at Lifestyles Magazine. While at Serenbe, she started her own PR firm and has represented such clients at W Hotel—Midtown, where she conceptualized the popular Street Food Thursdays and Midtown Pop Up Shops events.

Clearly, this UGA alumna is passionate about Atlanta and promoting all the city has to offer. Berta believes her undergraduate experience studying advertising at UGA’s Grady College made her a better public relations professional and writer. She explains, “The Grady professors’ attention to carefully crafted messages and tightly edited copy gave me the skills to write a solid pitch or story.” And because of her experience at UGA as a student and fundraiser, Berta also recognizes the importance of making an annual gift to UGA. As a President’s Club donor to the Grady College, Berta is making a difference for students today who, like her, will move into careers where they will recognize the impact UGA makes. These days, you'll find Berta co-writing a book with Serenbe founder, Steve Nygren, managing the sustainable community's social media platforms, freelancing for food-centric publications including The Local Palate and conducting social media seminars at AmericasMart Atlanta. In February, Tucker was named a "Top 10 Under 40" influential Atlantan by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles. Connect with Tucker Berta on Twitter and LinkedIn.

Wormsloe Foundation Gifts Piece of Plantation Mr. and Mrs. Craig Barrow III have quite a history with UGA. Ten generations of the Barrow family have attended UGA and the Wormsloe property has been in the family since the founding of the state of Georgia. Recently the trustees of the Wormsloe Foundation donated about 15 acres of the historic property, located 10 miles southeast of Savannah, for use by the UGA College of Environment and Design and other UGA colleges and units. The property will be used for research by faculty and graduate students working in ecology, environmental history and archeology. Located on the Isle of Hope, Wormsloe Plantation dates back to the 1730s and before then was used by Native Americans. It has served as a military stronghold, plantation, country residence, farm and tourist attraction. The parcel deeded to UGA is adjacent to land remaining in the Barrow family. The following video from the Barrows recognition at UGA’s 2013 Celebration of Support shows the beautiful property and shares some of its rich history.

Last year I started a baseball scholarship in the name of my late grandfather, Rev. Joseph T. Humphries. He was a Methodist Preacher for 62 years and helped me become the man I am today. I can never repay him for all he did for me, but he was an avid baseball fan and he will forever be remembered now at UGA. I wanted to be able to provide the same opportunities for young athletes that were afforded to me. UGA gave me the skills to tackle the real world and for that I am forever grateful.

Marzka Featured in Better Homes and Gardens Congratulations to Kelly Marzka (ABJ ’06), who was featured in the June issue of Better Homes and Gardens for her fabulous laundry room renovation for only $157! After working in corporate public relations for five years, Marzka started her blog View Along the Way, which chronicles her efforts to transform their home into the home of their dreams through D.I.Y. projects—all on a budget. Marzka’s “aha” moment was when she decided to decorate it according to her tastes—not popular Pinterest trends or what others like. Congratulations to Kelly and her husband, Andy (BSED ’05), for being featured in such a prominent magazine as they tackle numerous home improvement and decorating projects. Follow Kelly at View Along the Way to see what’s next on her to-do list.

Vet School for a Day The UGA College of Veterinary Medicine will hold its annual "Vet School for a Day" program on September 25. The event is especially for high school juniors and seniors throughout Georgia and South Carolina who are curious about a career in veterinary medicine. The program includes a tour of the Teaching Hospital, a meeting with faculty from different areas of veterinary medicine, visiting with current veterinary students and hearing from alumni. "Through this program, we hope to educate students and guidance counselors about the many career opportunities available within the field of veterinary medicine," said Paige Carmichael, the associate dean for academic affairs in the veterinary college. "Vet School for a Day" is sponsored by the David Forehand Foundation, created in memory of alumnus Dr. David Forehand, who received his doctor of veterinary medicine from the college in 1976.
