Welcome to the 2017-2018 Research Review for the University of Georgia School of Social Work! The School is committed to educating excellent social work practitioners, and we know in order to do this most effectively we need to generate new knowledge through research. Only with the most current and accurate information will our students be able to engage in effective practice. It is for this reason that I’m excited to share with you all of the impactful research we conduct here at UGA; through this work, the School champions a better quality of life and social justice for all. In this Review, you’ll get a deeper picture of faculty findings that support people’s physical and mental health, fight poverty and promote a more secure future, and strengthen communities and families. You’ll also learn about our Center for Social Justice, Human and Civil Rights, which seeks to ensure that all people have equitable access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. Our Center and its faculty affiliates bridge the research world and the community, bringing real-world answers to people and communities in need. In addition, you’ll read about our most recent Ph.D. graduates, who represent the next generation of scholars and thought leaders. Their optimism and tenacity in tackling societal problems should give us all hope for the future. Our commitment to finding answers to society’s toughest questions—poverty, mental illness, health disparities, oppression and injustice—drives our research. SOCIAL JUSTICE, HUMAN and CIVIL RIGHTS The University of Georgia’s Center for Social Justice, Human and Civil Rights promotes social justice and the understanding of human rights, values and issues. Established in 2013 and housed in the School of Social Work, the Center’s value comes from its interdisciplinary collaboration, explains Dr. Llewellyn J. Cornelius, LCSW, the Center’s director and the Donald Lee Hollowell Distinguished Professor of Civil Rights and Social Justice Studies. Social justice, he says, is “the pursuit in favor of a fair and equitable society... Across campus, we have quite a few souls interested in social justice and it makes the lifting a lot less heavy. The whole is greater than the sum of many parts, especially in academia where we tend to stick to our silos.”

To that end, the following fellows represent a cross section of scholars from across the University of Georgia campus who are documenting the barriers of access to resources in society, as well as the achievement of health, mental health and economic well-being.

Dr. Harold Briggs’ core social work research foci include the study of social, cultural and ecological predictors of African-American well-being and adjustment in child welfare, behavioral health and sexual health. Recently, he has been using content analysis methods to review the extent to which the focus on race and African-Americans continues to be marginalized in the social work profession. For example, in the most recent issue of Research on Social Work Practice (RSWP), Dr. Briggs’ content analysis study of the extent to which African-Americans are an emphasis in social work literature revealed a small emphasis on topics of race and African-Americans. The scholarship of Associate Professor of Employment Law & Legal Studies, Dawn D. Bennett-Alexander, Esq., focuses on discrimination in the workplace against African-American women. She understands that the work of social justice is broad and deep. How could it not be, given the fact that it tries to dismantle an entire system that formed the basis of life in our country for its nearly 400year existence? Not only is social justice about changing government systems, laws, rules and social mores that limit the lives of groups not considered favored, but also about examining the underlying principles that dictate those peoples’ personal lives. She writes that “while many of these rules have been dismantled, vestiges of many still remain with us in ways that significantly impact our everyday lives.” Dr. Y. Joon Choi researches gender-based violence, and specifically intimate partner violence (IPV). “My current research addresses this critical need to prevent IPV and enhance access to services and resources for immigrant victims of IPV,” she explains. “Specifically, I have developed a culturally appropriate online training for immigrant religious leaders, with the purpose of increasing their capacity to assist immigrant victims and help prevent IPV

in immigrant communities.” She first tested this training with Korean immigrant religious leaders in a small (n=55), randomized clinical trial and found that the online training speaks to Korean immigrant religious leaders’ cultural values; they embraced the online format. The program was effective at increasing knowledge of and attitudes against IPV. Dr. Jane McPherson’s scholarship sees social work through a human rights lens, and she applies human rights principles to research, teaching and practice. She creates tools to investigate and promote rights-based social work practice, and her work has been translated into Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese. Currently, with funding from the International Association of Schools of Social Work, Dr. McPherson is working with a team of scholars from Croatia, Albania, Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina to explore human rights engagement among social workers in Southeastern Europe and to develop culturally appropriate human rights trainings for the region. Another area of research focus for Dr. McPherson is social work education. Dr. David Okech’s work focuses on local and global human trafficking. He writes that “a social work perspective on human trafficking is critical in effective anti-trafficking efforts, not only because of the professional guiding principles and values, but also because of the comprehensive nature of social work interventions. Herzog (2008) noted that there are significant attitudinal disparities among the general public, who continue to view victims of trafficking as complicit with all or part of the crime. A social work approach is not only guided by the values of social justice and human rights; it also sees the greater micro, mezzo, macro and global contexts that are associated with trafficking. Using an ecological approach, social workers are able to look beyond the perpetrator-victim dichotomy to the

qualities that empower individuals and groups as survivors and advocates.” Dr. Michael A. Robinson’s research is in the areas of substance abuse, criminal justice and the investigations of police shootings. He has an established research and publication history in the area of African-Americans and mental health, and how interactions with the criminal justice system affect mental health outcomes. Dr. Robinson serves as an advisor and educator in the area of diversionary programs for individuals who have been arrested/ticketed for marijuana use, alcohol use, theft and anger management. He has been recognized across the country as an expert in the field and was recently honored by the Conference on Racial Ethnic and Cultural Diversity for his work in the area of African-Americans and the justice system. Dr. Tiffany Washington focuses on the challenges of managing End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) for older adults of color. Race disparities in ESRD are profound in the southeastern United States; meanwhile, living with ESRD can be difficult and negatively affect quality of life. The need to promote positive self-management of ESRD in diverse populations is, therefore, important. Dr. Washington’s research examines the impact of psychosocial factors on kidney disease self-management among black and white older adults. The ultimate goal of her work is to improve the qual-

ity of life for older adults living with chronic conditions, especially given the fact that they affect nearly two-thirds of that population. Dr. Henry N. Young’s research targets health equity and social determinants that impact overall health and well-being. The nationwide issue of addressing and moving beyond the mere identification of health disparities drives his research program. Dr. Young’s interests focus on health communication, medication use and health outcomes, with a special interest in improving health care for underserved and minority patient populations. He writes that “minority communities are overwhelmingly burdened by negative health outcomes, many of which stem from chronic medical conditions that are treated with medications. In an effort to overcome these negative outcomes, we may ask ourselves: How do we help minority communities use medications safely and appropriately to improve health and well-being?” — Allison Salerno

NEXT GENERATION 2017-2018 Doctoral Program Graduates The Social Work Ph.D. Program at the University of Georgia is committed to training and producing community-engaged scholars who address persistent and emerging social problems. This group of students represents such scholars in the making. Their dissertation research has explored various issues of great relevance to our communities, including disability, substance abuse, social exclusion, mental illness, trauma and foster care, all of which affect diverse populations such as older adults, disabled persons, African immigrants, children in foster care and Asian-Americans, at the individual, organizational and/or policy levels. What they have learned from their research will advance not only our knowledge on these issues, but also have tremendous implications for social work practice, policy, education and research. We are proud of this exceptionally brilliant and hard-working group of doctoral students who will soon be regarded as thought leaders in their respective areas of research and scholarship. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Y. Launching the Next Generation Greg Purser of Cochran, Georgia, was drawn to pursue a doctorate in social work after working as a program manager at a local homeless shelter. “I realized I was fascinated by bigger picture questions such as program efficacy, outcomes and policy,” he says. “The best opportunity that UGA presented me in terms of research was access to a plethora of highly skilled and intelligent professors and researchers to work alongside so that I could develop my own skills and interests.” Dr. Purser will begin work this fall as an assistant professor in the School of Social Work at Louisiana State University. His research interests are substance use and mental health issues, with a specific attention to older adults. Xiaochuan Wang, who usually goes by Sharon, grew up in Xiamen in the southeastern part of China. She earned a Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis, during and after which time she had various opportunities to work directly with immigrants. “From my practice experiences, I realized that there’s a gap between immigrants’ mental health needs and the services they received/ utilized to address such needs,” she observes. “Altogether, the UGA program helped me become a well-trained and well-prepared researcher and educator, which was the key of landing my academic position at the University of Central Florida.” Dr. Wang will be an assistant professor at the School of Social Work at UCF beginning in August. In her direct practice experience, Katherine Crawford of Atlanta saw many issues and barriers to providing effective services, particularly when working with people with trauma histories.

“I chose to pursue my Ph.D. so I could gain the skills and knowledge to address these concerns across organizations and social service systems. I also wanted be a part of the education of emerging social work professionals and assist them in attaining tools and skills to be effective in the field of social work,” she says. Dr. Crawford will be an assistant professor at Auburn University, starting in August. She expresses that “UGA did a great job of sharing information about my research interests with prospective job placements. They also helped prepare me when going on the job market.” Kimberly Hoyt of Atlanta credits her graduate work at UGA with transforming her academic writing into scholarly work. “I was fortunate enough to be taken under the wing of senior faculty early in my program, which yielded numerous opportunities to publish,” she says. Dr. Hoyt juggled full time work with graduate studies. “The flexibility afforded me to manage my time and course load to accommodate working and commuting was vital to my successful completion,” she acknowledges. “It is no question that the school is invested in the success of its students.” Effective summer 2018, Hoyt will be promoted to senior research associate and principal investigator for a program monitoring project she has managed at Georgia State University, while pursuing her doctorate at UGA. Lauren A. Ricciardelli of Columbus, Georgia, has been an assistant professor of social work at Troy University’s Riverfront Campus since January 2018. Her research is focused on the intersections of social welfare, disability and criminal justice policy; clinical and legal determinations of intellectual disability; disability advocacy; social inclusion and critical theory; and community-based service provision, workforce integration and postsecondary education.

Launching the Next Generation In reflecting on her time at UGA, Dr. Ricciardelli says, “I really enjoyed the freedom to take electives of interest (so, for me, theories of equality and critical issues in disability studies) through outside departments/programs/ schools within the University of Georgia— and anchoring these concepts within the social work ethical and practice frameworks….The faculty at the School of Social Work were nothing short of amazing in providing me with mentorship, encouragement, resources, and support. ’’ “Before I entered the Ph.D. program, I worked at a nonprofit that provides supports to people with disabilities,” says Stephen McGarity of Athens, Georgia. “The majority of the people I worked with lived in poverty and received government benefits. I saw that these individuals were struggling to make it month-to-month due to crushing poverty and inadequate public welfare. The more I learned about poverty and people with disability, the more questions I had. After much discussion with some faculty members at UGA, I decided the Ph.D. program would be the best place to help me

answer some of those questions and conduct research that could help correct some of those inequalities.” McGarity is starting as an assistant professor with the University of Tennessee in the fall. “The three main things that made my time as a Ph.D. student in the School of Social Work wonderful,” he claims, “were the accessibility to top-notch research faculty, student support and the sense of community within the School.” Sherinah Saasa is an assistant professor at Brigham Young University. Her research interests include African immigrant adjustment in the United States, and international child welfare with a focus on the intersections of poverty, education inequality, gender-based discrimination and HIV/AIDS on the outcomes of vulnerable children in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Saasa, whose hometown is Lusaka, Zambia, says she was drawn to pursue a Ph.D. in social work due to “a deepening sense of social responsibility obtained through direct practice [that] fueled [her] desire to expand [her] influence in social work to a macro level.” “I knew that a Ph.D. in social work would better support my commitment to principles of social justice and equity,” she explains, “and expand my ability to generate knowledge, move social welfare policies and social work education forward.” Further, UGA’s program “provided me hands-on opportunities to become a better researcher and a better teacher, and also provided great seminars in preparation for the job market. This distinguished professorship, which we plan to establish in Dr. Holland’s name, will honor his contributions by providing for the hiring of a new faculty member to continue his legacy of scholarship, teaching and more.
