KEYNOTE SPEAKER Fenwick Broyard, MSW ‘13 Fenwick Broyard is a New Orleans native who arrived in Athens in 2010 to pursue a master’s in social work. While enrolled at UGA he led the community agriculture program of the Athens Land Trust, and coestablished the West Broad Market Garden and Young Urban Farmers, a sustainable agriculture program for Clarke County high school students. Upon completing his master’s, Fenwick was named executive director of Community Connection of Northeast Georgia. As director, Broyard leveraged his agency’s operation of the region’s 2-1-1 information and referral line into a standard-setting, collaborative needs assessment on behalf of Athens Regional and St. Mary’s hospitals. He also led the agency’s consolidation with the United Way of Northeast Georgia before heading off to pursue and secure his master of divinity from Vanderbilt University. In January 2020 he began work as a community support specialist for the Clarke County School District. Most recently he has been active in the Athens Works Initiative, which assists local businesses impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

A NEXT STEP MESSAGE from DR. C. As you graduate I send you aspirations to engage in compassionate leadership as exemplified by the life of Eleanor Roosevelt. I leave you both a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt — “Someone once asked me what I regarded as the three most important requirements for happiness. My answer was: A feeling that you have been honest with yourself and those around you; a feeling that you have done the best you could both in your personal life and in your work; and the ability to love others,” as well as a book recommendation to continue to build in this direction. The following book has generous examples on how Eleanor exhibited compassionate leadership: Leadership the Eleanor Roosevelt Way: Timeless Strategies from the First Lady of Courage by Robin Gerber. DR. LLEWELLYN J. CORNELIUS

Donald L. Hollowell Distinguished Professor of Civil Rights and Social Justice Studies Director, Center for Social Justice, Human and Civil Rights

Yours in Peace and Love, Dr. C. May, 2020
