Dining Room Remodel & Residential Program Kitchen

House of Ruth was able to renovate the kitchen and dining room in our 55-bed shelter with the support of capital grants from The Ahmanson Foundation and the S. Mark Taper Foundation. The goal of the renovation was to create a safe, accessible, and welcoming space for all our residents and staff to enjoy. Residential Services Director, Kimberly Mason had the following to say about the recent renovation:

“For many shelter residents, being able to prepare meals in a safe and welcoming space, where equipment is functional, accessible, and available, is invaluable. The equipment, space, and environment in the new shelter kitchen and dining area is functional, easily accessible to all residents, and provides accommodation to individuals with disabilities. It also provides a space that is welcoming to children while also addressing the need for safety. The kitchen/dining room offers residents calm, nurturing, and beautiful environment where families gather safely and share mealtimes with each other.

Preparing and sharing food with family, friends, and another human being can be so healing and renewing. This is undoubtedly one of the most important gifts that the shelter kitchen and dining room renovation has and will continue to give to residents. Last year hundreds of families were able to access nutritious food from our renovated kitchen.
