OPEN UNIVERSITY / AR402 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN V SPRING 2017 PART 1. SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
PART 2. ARCHITECTURE AS PROVOCATION
AR 402 is the last architectural design studio of the architectural curriculum at IYTE. In spring semester 2017, students are asked
to develop an architectural design project on the future of the city questioning architecture as provocation in Izmir.
STUDIO OBJECTIVES The primary objectives of the studio are as follows: To propose an urban analytic approach. To propose massing solutions in urban scale. To propose a design concept and design with complex building program parallel to the urban analytic
studies. To use the knowledge of contemporary structural systems. To use multi-media tools and to express design ideas through diagrams and collages.
With the theme proposed ‘Architecture as Provocation’, the students are expected to discuss the search of architecture that can be provocative, innovative, seminal, remarkable, striking and thus a starting point of the transformation the city Izmir. Course of actions prepared by legal authorities determine the future of the cities. They sometimes stem from the dynamics of the city which are already progressing or products of brand-new dynamics. Sometimes, change occurs as a result of mixed voices.
***SUMMARY
Within the scope of the ARC402 graduation project, students were asked to consider architecture as a provocation and finding them non-conventional solutions after identifying problems of cities.
UĞUR YILDIRIM ŞIMŞEK
The studio aims to understand and evaluate architecture as a tool of questioning the future of the cities, development strategies through responding or criticizing spatial proposals. Can a building bring incitement to the city? Can architecture incite and activity? Is architecture an effective catalyst? What is provoking in Izmir? The students should focus on the questions listed above, and should find answers within the frame of the theme.

PART 3. SITE The project site is selected as the shore and the back of Alsancak Port district. The site attaching the Alsancak Train Station, Mürsel Paşa Boulevard and Liman Street, as a triangle, consists of mostly histori-
cal, commercial, industrial old and new buildings. *Each student will determine his/her own project area according to her/ his problem definition in this region.

PART 4. INTRODUCTION TO PROPOSAL Education systems around the world are the largest industries that determines the future of countries. It is natural that there are institutions that want to
manage such a large industry in their own best interests: it can be assumed that the greatest influence comes from the state, and at least from the student. The state is
being trafficked primarily through schools and then through press. The majority of countries control the administration, the press and the educational institutions.
***SUMMARY “Open University” is a new system proposal that cares about the public usage value of the universities where has no physical or mental walls between city with university.
UĞUR YILDIRIM ŞIMŞEK
Whenever the individual enters the university, then he finds himself in a free environment. He questioned
his life, beliefs, thoughts, social and political environment, changing world order and domination of authority most in this period. However, this does not serve the
purpose of the state, the walls around the universities are called “campus”. For this reason, the freedom of thought is prevented from forming an echo. The con-
nections of the existing university buildings to the scaled-down city the voice of the state wants are also broken. And here I am proposing a new “Open University”
which can oppose this scheme and which can be included in the city and raise its voice freely.

Copy Ground Track & Rescale The track of the massing group has been moved to site. Massing track has been scaled by consideration of relation with content and program requeriments.
Extrude Track Solid massing has been created for completing program meter square necessities.
Cut & Create Visual Contact Solid massing has been sheared off each other for overcoming relations with environment such as visual, physical and circulative.
Implement Typology
The present typology was applied over the masses to provide the relationship with the context and to eliminate the concept of boundary.
UĞUR YILDIRIM ŞIMŞEK
Re-organisation of the Massing & Detection of Damaged Buildings Solid masses have been reorganized to ensure the interrelation of new masses. Demolished buildings have been identified in the area.
Create Circulation Circulation between solid masses have been created and new use proposals have been introduced in place of the demolished buildings.
Mass Extraction
Gaps have been created in order to provide natural lighting within the solid masses and to create public spaces.
Focal Points The focal points that strengthen the project attitude have been created and detailed.

of the population lives in a small scale of center. The site is located in 50.872064, 20.628417 coordinate which is west of Rynek.
The site has an art academy, a civic center and a dynamic public square in a circle that has five hundred meter radius.

“Folded Park” is a proposal that sets a strong relation with it’s content.
Idea takes shape from this dynamic, fluid place where high numerous of young people who has interest with art interacts.
It is made from wood that is able to be fold such as a paper. When walking path creates a short cut for pedestrians, folded pieces
gains new functions and create new possible usages for people along the path. Consequently, it creates a harmony both with it’s
temporary and permanent users.

The participants are to design functional, sustainable spaces that cater to the needs of these five researchers.
The spaces for the program
include: Living Area l Sleeping Area for five l Cooking Area l Research Area l Interaction Spaces l Areas for Sanitation and Bath l Recreation Area l

PART 2. INTRODUCTION TO PROPOSAL Tumbleweed, is a self sustaining, mobile living space which is designed with biomimetic architectural philosophy in mind. Tumbleweeds are a common sight across the deserts of Earth. With
this expedition, humanity will be walking on the biggest desert they have ever seen. Thus, designing a mobile living unit that will roll across the endless deserts of the red planet seemed fit.
Mars hosts sandstorms that last for weeks that are unpredictable, covering large-scale areas and making it impossible to harvest solar energy so a hybrid space proposal is introduced that

on Mars with the aim of being at the minimum level of weight. All the furnitures are hidden inside the space between the radiation shield and the supporting columns surrounding the interior,
thus providing a spacious living space on minimum conditions. The obstacle in restricting the research area of a built-in space has been overcome by designing a mobile living unit.
As a result, Tumbleweed is a “house-vehicle proposal that is designed to be able to withstand all the extreme climatic conditions of the Red Planet while researching the different param-

PART 3. INTRODUCTION TO PROPOSAL From the eyes of Vincent, The bridge allows us to see Amsterdam. An artist and his technique, vision, understanding is what we

by mimicking the expression of Vincent Willem van Gogh’s painting style and presenting it to us by painting the real life. The glass facade works as a filter,
breaking the light into pieces with its form and creating an image of what is behind it. While serving as a monument dedicated to Gogh, the bridge
operates as an open air exhibition space. Without interrupting people’s daily commute, it enables the art to be seen by every demographic. In
order to bring people together and expand the usage of the space, a conference hall has been included which can serve as a public speaking platform as well
as an open air movie theatre and a dock for important shipments. In conclusion, we are just trying to understand Vincent better, to see the world from his point of
view and maybe add to ourselves a little idea about what he felt, what he experienced, what he imagined.

being felt everyone he knows was artificial. He was becoming more problematic person each passing day and his desire of staying alone was growing in an unstoppable
