Nine changes to on-campus dining you should know Traynor Swanson @traynorswanson

With the right plan, you can eat as many meals as you want whenever you want. Students with the unlimited access plan can go to the Moody Towers and Cougar Woods dining halls 24/7 without having to worry about how many meal swipes they have. So if you stop by before class to grab a muffin and coffee, you don’t have to worry about wasting a meal swipe.

There’s a new position to ensure student satisfaction at dining halls. The Division of Administration and Finance opened a new position to ensure student satisfaction. The program director of UH Dining Services will monitor all aspects of the dining program, including student perceptions and feedback.

You can use meal swipes at select retailers. The meal exchange feature allows meal plan holders to use their meal swipes at certain locations during specified hours. Students with the Platinum, Gold and Silver plans can do this once per day, and students with the Budget plan can do this once per week.

Moody Towers and Cougar Woods will have self-serving espresso machines. Riddle said he expects the “very cool, high-end, self-service espresso bars” will be popular among students.

You can access everything from your phone. Chartwells will offer a mobile application, allowing students to order online, access nutritional information and look at menus from their phones.

Key performance indicators Chartwells and the Student Government Association will create “key performance indicators” -- a metric-based system using surveys and feedback to measure student satisfaction. The KPI’s can be updated to reflect students’ change in preference.

Chartwells hopes to make the University’s dining halls greencertified by 2020. Beginning this semester, Chartwells will roll out a zero waste-to-landfill program at the Moody Towers and Cougar Woods dining halls. The program will be fully implemented by 2020.

New equipment means more food variety.

Students can intern with the Chartwells managing team.

David Riddle, the Chartwells district manager who oversees the University of Houston System, said the company will offer a wider range of food. For example, they’re adding a rotisserie, which enables dining halls to offer gyros.

The new contract includes several internship opportunities for students in marketing, sustainability and general management. Those students will essentially become a part of the Chartwells managing team, Riddle said.

Tailgate like a pro with these seven Cougar fan must-haves Marialuisa rincon @lucyrinconb

Re-useable water bottle Water is a given, dehydration is not fun. But why not hydrate and save the environment at the same time? Not only are there cool UH branded water bottles for sale in the bookstore, you can get free ones around campus all through Weeks of Welcome.

All red everything Unless through some crazy turn of events the uniform (and school colors) change, every single student should be showing their pride with at least one scarlet article of clothing or accessory.

Cougar Pride Need we say more? Fight, fight, fight for the red and the white!

Fan (or a copy of The Cougar)

Food

As long as you’ve read it already, a copy of The Cougar makes a perfectly acceptable fan during those hot September gamedays. Pick one up anywhere on campus for the latest news and sports coverage. You can also get a boring regular fan, but who wants that?

Somewhat optional, but what’s a tailgate without some barbecue or a taco bar? If done correctly, the tailgate food should fill you up enough to where you don’t have to spend $15 on a hot dog inside TDECU, but be light enough to where you’re not passing out from the combination of heat, sun and dinner.

Sunscreen/sun protection (hats are fun)

Drinks

It’s pretty difficult NOT to protect yourself from the sun, like you have to try. Wear a hat, smother yourself in sunscreen, hide under the tailgate tent, bring an umbrella. Skin cancer is real, people.

Even more optional, especially if you’re under 21, but what’s a tailgate without beer? Water, soda, mixed drinks: they’re all fine. But to celebrate this quintessential American tradition, nothing less than some ice cold beer will do.

Need to study? Check out these five dynamic spaces

grand(ish) staircase. In case you need some campus resources, student government, the LGBTQ Resource Center, the Women & Gender Resource Center, Veteran Services and the international students offices are just down the hall. The music you hear blasting through the built-in speakers? UH’s only on-campus radio station, Coog Radio.

Cullen Family Plaza

eMILY bURLESON @EMILYRBURLESON

Depending on who you ask, the fountain is back, making the Cullen Family Plaza a prime study and relaxation spot in mild weather. Bring your hammock, some ties and your books and you’re set.

M.D. Anderson Library

Cougar Grounds

At UH’s biggest library, you have almost endless options on where to set up pre-finals camp. In the oldest portion of the building, floors 7 and 8 offer stunning views of downtown and group seating. For silent studying, try floors 4 through 6. Computers, some equipped with Adobe and other software, are available on the first floor. Honors students often flock to the Honors Commons, located on the second floor in the Honors College.

One of UH’s hidden gems, Cougar Grounds, a coffeeshop and kolache stop with an indie feel, has plenty of seating for reading or meeting up for a group project. The baristas and staff are all students in the Conrad Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, so tip well. In fairer weather, the patio has outdoor seating with a view of Lynn Eusan Park.

Second floor of the Student Center North

Trek over to the Campus Rec for a more active study session. Try recording a professor’s lecture on your smartphone, then listen over headphones on the treadmill or while lifting. Another option: do some reading or go over notes on the treadmill.

For some open-air studying with good tunes, try the lofted Student Center North. Plenty of couch and coffee table space is available in this lobby area, located at the top of the

Campus Recreation and Wellness Center
