Make an impact on campus, be active in the community

Bryce Dodds

@BryceJdodds

The University boasts more than 400 registered student organizations, fraternities, sororities and leadership programs. It might seem overwhelming with all the choices, but there’s a place for every student to find a community.

Metropolitan Volunteer Program For students who want to help others, MVP is a great choice. Their stated mission is to “create and provide service opportunities for students by collaborating with campus and community partners.” Membership is completely free and extremely rewarding for participants in any number of community projects they perform during the year.

Student Government Association If your focus is toward giving back to the UH community and providing for student needs, SGA is a great way to do that. Become a voice for your fellow students in your college or school by running for a senate seat and bring awareness to the needs of the many.

Frontier Fiesta The biggest, and proudest, tradition at this school doesn’t just happen without a team of hardworking students who make sure everything

operates without a hitch. Beginning in 1940, Frontier Fiesta is one of the longest-running traditions at UH and is a centerpiece of student engagement. It takes a strong team of committed individuals to pull off this epic occasion, and you can play a big part in that!

Student Program Board SPB is responsible for a large number of engaging events during the year, such as concerts, movies and board game nights to help students unwind. What if you’re interested in getting involved, but don’t know how you’ll fit in? Worry not: SPB has a quiz on their website to help you find the suitable committee. This will help you find the best place to make use of your talents and passions for the betterment of students.

The Center for Student Media One of the best ways to get involved and give back to the community is by telling its stories! With several branches of student media — The Cougar newspaper, Cooglife magazine, CoogTV and Coog Radio — you’re sure to find a place where students just like you are eager to learn and grow outside of the classroom. And the best part? You don’t have to be a certain major to be a part of any of the three organizations. As long as you have passion for what you do, there’s a spot for you.

A guide to the best on-campus food trucks

Dana C. Jones @danacjones_

Houston used to be the fattest city in America, but as of now we rank 53 out of 100 according to WalletHub. Even though we aren’t at the top, the food that got us there stays. As University of Houston students, along with the food on campus, we get to experience the city’s cuisine by way of food trucks that you can eat at using your Cougar Cash that come with some meal plans. Here are some of the best food trucks that come to UH for your eating pleasure.

The Burger Joint While having its own restaurant, it makes it that much easier to get a hold of going mobile. The Burger Joint has made to order classic burgers with add-ons like bacon, cheese, avocado, and a fried egg. If you like that reduced menu from the food trucks, you can head up to the Montrose area to the restaurant and full menu.

Coreanos With the hype around Asian fusion food, this food truck does it the best. Coreanos mixes Asian food like bulgogi and kimchi and puts it in a corn taco with lime, cilantro and onions. They serve different burritos along with the fusion food staple kimchi fries that they’ve cleverly names kimcheese fries.

Flip N’ Patties This truck has some of the most creative options. Flip N’ Patties makes burgers on Filipino steamed buns, but what they put on them range from every kind of flavor imaginable from banana ketchup aioli, panko seared tilapia marinated chopped pecan smoked pork butt and more.

The Waffle Bus A local fave, The Waffle Bus ranges from the savory of their buttermilk chicken and salmon to the sweet treats of chocolate covered strawberries and Nutella and banana. If you don’t try any of the food trucks — which you should — you at least need to try this one.

Need to study? Check out these five dynamic spaces grand(ish) staircase. In case you need some campus resources, student government, the LGBTQ Resource Center, the Women & Gender Resource Center, Veteran Services and the international students offices are just down the hall. The music you hear blasting through the built-in speakers? UH’s only on-campus radio station, Coog Radio.

Cullen Family Plaza

Emily bURLESON @EMILYRBURLESON

Depending on who you ask, the fountain is back, making the Cullen Family Plaza a prime study and relaxation spot in mild weather. Bring your hammock, some ties and your books and you’re set.

M.D. Anderson Library

Cougar Grounds

At UH’s biggest library, you have almost endless options on where to set up pre-finals camp. In the oldest portion of the building, floors 7 and 8 offer stunning views of downtown and group seating. For silent studying, try floors 4 through 6. Computers, some equipped with Adobe and other software, are available on the first floor. Honors students often flock to the Honors Commons, located on the second floor in the Honors College.

One of UH’s hidden gems, Cougar Grounds, a coffee shop and kolache stop with an indie feel, has plenty of seating for reading or meeting up for a group project. The baristas and staff are all students in the Conrad Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, so tip well. In fairer weather, the patio has outdoor seating with a view of Lynn Eusan Park.

Second floor of the Student Center North

Trek over to the Campus Rec for a more active study session. Try recording a professor’s lecture on your smartphone, then listen over headphones on the treadmill or while lifting. Another option: do some reading or go over notes on the treadmill.

For some open-air studying with good tunes, try the lofted Student Center North. Plenty of couch and coffee table space is available in this lobby area, located at the top of the

Campus Recreation and Wellness Center

STRENGTHENING THE PRIDE

Tailgate like a pro with these seven Cougar fan must-haves Marialuisa rincon @lucyrinconb

Re-usable water bottle Water is a given, dehydration is not fun. But why not hydrate and save the environment at the same time? Not only are there cool UH branded water bottles for sale in the bookstore, you can get free ones around campus all through Weeks of Welcome.

All red everything Unless through some crazy turn of events the uniform (and school colors) change, every single student should be showing their pride with at least one scarlet article of clothing or accessory.

Cougar Pride Need we say more? Fight, fight, fight for the red and the white!

Fan (or a copy of The Cougar)

Food

As long as you’ve read it already, a copy of The Cougar makes a perfectly acceptable fan during those hot September game days. Pick one up anywhere on campus for the latest news and sports coverage. You can also get a boring regular fan, but who wants that?

Somewhat optional, but what’s a tailgate without some barbecue or a taco bar? If done correctly, the tailgate food should fill you up enough to where you don’t have to spend $15 on a hot dog inside TDECU, but be light enough to where you’re not passing out from the combination of heat, sun and dinner.

Sunscreen/sun protection (hats are fun)

Drinks

It’s pretty difficult NOT to protect yourself from the sun, like you have to try. Wear a hat, smother yourself in sunscreen, hide under the tailgate tent, bring an umbrella. Skin cancer is real, people.

Even more optional, especially if you’re under 21, but what’s a tailgate without beer? Water, soda, mixed drinks: they’re all fine. But to celebrate this quintessential American tradition, nothing less than some ice cold beer will do.

Five UH things incoming Cougars should know

Julie Araica @juliearaica

Want to thrive at UH? Make sure you are familiar with these five UH staples.

The Cougar Sign Back in 1953, UH used live cougar mascots to represent Shasta instead of the costumed ones we know today. En route to a game against the University of Texas, one of these cougar’s toes got caught in her cage, and during the game, UT mocked our team using a hand gesture that simulated a threetoed paw. However, UH students quickly adopted this hand gesture as a way of supporting their beloved mascot.

Rub Shasta’s paw for good luck If you ever really need to ace an exam, it might not hurt to drop by the cougar statues in front of Cullen family plaza. It is said that rubbing their paws will bring you good luck, and when you’re in a pinch, it doesn’t hurt to have said luck on your side.

Cougar Red Fridays On Fridays, cougars wear red. Not only is wearing red on Fridays a great way to show school spirit, some professors will even give away extra credit points to the students who represent cougar pride during this time of the week.

Coog Deals | 19

School colors The official hues of UH are scarlet red and albino white. These were the two colors reference the ancestors of Sam Houston, with red symbolizing courage and strength, and white symbolizing goodwill and a desire to help others.

Frontier Fiesta Once dubbed by Life magazine as “the greatest college show on earth,” Frontier Fiesta is UH’s first tradition, and is a three-day event that takes place every spring semester. The event usually features rides, variety shows and headline performances for students to enjoy.

We all scream for these tasty flavors of Shasta’s ice cream Emily Burleson @emilyrburleson

Cold scoops, hot coffee and warm smiles greet anyone who walks into Shasta’s Cones & More, an ice cream parlor that serves the University of Houston’s most reliable late-night coffee (well, later than 6 p.m.) this side of Bauer. Between Blue Bell — the establishment’s original stock — and Ashby’s Sterling ice creams, the choices are overwhelming. Honorable mentions from the Shasta’s staff include Lime Sherbet, Anniversary Cake and the coconut-chocolate Eskimo Kisses.

Scout’s Honor Mint Cookie Find yourself craving Thin Mints in July? Usually, you are out of luck, but Shasta’s is here to help. The flavor’s mint green base is the perfect complement for the faux Thin Mints (Ashby’s version features rounded cookies) and chocolate swirl within. It’s great in a cup, cone or in a milkshake.

Raspberry Chip Cheesecake Three amazing flavors — raspberry, chocolate chip and cheesecake — come together for this award-winning creation. Pro tip: It’s not a permanent flavor, so get it when you see it. The slight whip of fruitiness is refreshing on UH’s many hot days, but the cheesecake and chocolate leave this flavor grounded

firmly in ice cream territory. No tangy gelato here.

Cookies ‘n Cream This Blue Bell classic deserves its title as the creamery’s best-selling flavor. After all, according to the company, they came up with the idea first. Blue Bell bakes the chocolate cookies they crush and fold into the vanilla base themselves, so everything about this flavor is 100 percent Blue Bell. It’s extra sweet and lightly chocolatey, and the cookies turn soft enough that you’re enjoying the ice cream without the need to chew.

Mocha Almond Fudge No worries, chocoholics: This coffee-based flavor by Ashby’s has fudge in every bite. Chocolate-covered almonds and a heavy fudge swirl dominate the flavor, so even those who shy away from coffee could enjoy this pick-me-up delight. The almonds provide a satisfying crunch to the smooth ice cream texture.

Blueberry Muffin Top Ice cream for breakfast? Yes, please! Here, the blueberry swirl and pieces of muffin and streusel form a perfect marriage with the vanilla ice cream. Pair with a Shasta’s latte for a bona fide breakfast with a shorter wait time than Starbucks.
