Frontier Fiesta March 22-24, 2018
Message from the Chairman Welcome to Frontier Fiesta 2018! It’s a pleasure and honor to present to you this year’s event, 26 consecutive years running and celebrating 79 years since its inception in 1939. This year has provided us the opportunity to grow and learn like no other year before. Shortly after classes came in session, our local community was set back by the worst natural disaster to befall this area in centuries. Hurricane Harvey devastated our local community, leaving many without basic necessities. We refocused to help clean up; we donated our time and resources to help rebuild. While we worked we also watched, as friends, family, and total strangers came together to help those in need, all over this great state. Our hearts have always pounded with Cougar Pride. This year, I think we’ve got a bit more pride for our city and our University as we’ve seen #HoustonStrong became more than a tag line. With Hurricane Harvey behind us, we settled in on making sure Frontier Fiesta 2018 is a place where everyone can feel like they belong. The Frontier Fiesta Board of Directors, Frontier Fiesta Alumni Association, our mentors, advisors, UH Staff, volunteers, and supporters have come together to bring you the greatest student programming tradition at the University of Houston.
This year, we’re returning to parking lots 20A & 20C across from the Recreation Center. We’ve focused on expanding cook-off, increasing participation of organizations, bringing in more sponsors, and collaborating with more university departments. In collaboration with Chartwells, our new food service provider, we’ll have a variety of food trucks and they’ll be providing some great vegetarian and vegan BBQ options along with some staples like our 1.5lb turkey leg and funnel cake, all of which can be found at our new front Dr. Walker’s Provisions. Cougar Cash will be accepted on-site, so come on out and try some new food and enjoy our festive atmosphere. We’ve shaped each day to be as unique and diverse as you are! We hope you see that in our themes: Thursday we’re taking a step back in time by bringing in a roller rink, dueling pianos, and DJ Phon playing music from every decade. Friday we’re bringing in student performers singing in both English and Spanish, campus organizations to teach dance lessons in Salsa, Meringue, and Bachata, and Grupo Kache is making an appearance Friday evening so you can dance the night away. Saturday morning we have our annual 5k
Andrew Bahlmann, Chairman March for Marrow. Starting at noon, we’ll have our Family Fun Day with various activities for children like a rock wall, petting zoo, and balloon artists. The Houston Dynamo, Dash, and their mascot, Diesel, will be making an appearance. Some of the best student performers will carry us through Family Fun Day and in to the evening with our headliner Jeremih taking the stage at 10 p.m. Frontier Fiesta is continuing its tradition of
raising funds for scholarships through our Sethna County Jail. Come on by, place your friend inside, take a couple of photos and help us continue to bring in funds to support current and future students. To date we’ve awarded over $100,000 in scholarships. We hope you’ll help us carry on this tradition of giving back to our current and future students. Throughout Frontier Fiesta, you can come out to watch a variety show, take a ride on our Ferris wheel, enjoy the smells of hickory and mesquite smoked foods found throughout all of the cookoff. There is something for everyone and we hope you see that. The Frontier Fiesta Board of Directors strives to represent our community, exhibit school pride and spirit, and create an environment where everyone feels like they belong. I hope you enjoy your experience out here, with joy and pride, I present to you Frontier Fiesta 2018. Go Coogs!

How has Frontier Fiesta impacted your UH experience? Liz Hernandez, Vice Chair I have always said Frontier Fiesta, to me, is a celebration of the University of Houston and our city. We celebrate our accomplishments, our history, our culture, our rising future...the people that make this place great. What I love about Frontier Fiesta is that it is a time to come together and have an amazing time whether you are a student, faculty, staff, alumni, or from the Houston community. There is nothing like this at any other university, and I am humbled to be a part of this journey. It is one of the many ways that makes UH unique.
Jesus Garza, Director of Production Frontier Fiesta has allowed me to be a part of the greatest campus tradition while getting to create new events. I’ve also gotten to meet many new friends who all love Frontier Fiesta and the University of Houston as much as I do. I will never forget my experiences working with Frontier Fiesta, and I hope to be involved as an alumni for years to come. Cecilia Rodriguez, Director of Special Events Frontier Fiesta has shown me the importance of getting involved on campus. It is a rewarding experience to be able to join a team of committed students with a shared goal. Joining Frontier Fiesta gave me school pride and made me love what the University of Houston does for its students. Frontier Fiesta changed me in many ways, and I am glad I got to be a part of the board this year. Ann Johnson, Director of Development Being the Director of Development for Frontier Fiesta has helped me grow my involvement on campus and gain a deeper appreciation and love for my university. Frontier Fiesta is truly a community-wide event and a historic tradition on campus. Being on the board has allowed me to work with all members of the UH community to make this year’s event better than before. Frontier Fiesta is truly a memorable event and I am honored to working on an event that means so much to the UH community.
Anthony Salcido, Director of Operations Being the Director of Operations has impacted my life in many ways. Having attended the event for so many years, holding a director position has really given me insight on how the event runs and the history behind this long-standing tradition. It has also taught me how to plan a large-scale event/project and how to deal with adversity when everything does not go as planned. Finally, it has given me a lifetime of memories that I have made with everyone involved in planning the greatest event there is! Alyssa Garza, Director of Marketing As a transfer student, one of the first ways I got involved at the University of Houston was by applying to be part of Frontier Fiesta. I had no idea how big of a role I would play in this event and how much this organization would impact my life. Being a part of Frontier Fiesta was an eyeopening experience, planning a large-scale event for a diverse community such as UH and the greater Houston was a rewarding task I am honored to have been a part of. Larissa Jimenez, Director of Performances I was only ever outgoing with the friends I’ve known my whole life. Alone, I would always seclude myself and avoid contact from anyone. Frontier Fiesta gave me the confidence to go outside of my comfort zone and connect with new people. I’ve met really great people and gained great friendships through this organization. I’m very grateful for my time with Frontier Fiesta! Being the performance director for Frontier Fiesta has impact my life by showing me how amazing our student performers are. I was truly astonished by how talented our students are and I know in my heart they will go great places in the music industry.

Frontier Fiesta: A Tradition
rontier Fiesta saw its start in 1939. After a hiatus during World War II, Fiesta resumed in 1947 and ran through 1959. The tradition of Frontier Fiesta returned in 1992 and continues to this day. Dr. Walter Kemmerer, second in command to UH President E.E. Oberholtzer, is particularly remembered as the founder and greatest champion of Frontier Fiesta. After years off during the war, Kemmerer pushed to get Fiesta back into full swing, and the event reached national recognition in 1953. By that time, Frontier Fiesta was drawing huge crowds of up to 200,000 people, including celebrities such as James Garner, Humphrey Bogart, and more.
Tall task
By the late 1950s, Frontier Fiesta consumed months of students’ attention and significant fundraising to create what Life Magazine called the “Greatest College Show on Earth” in 1958. The student leaders behind Frontier Fiesta in the 1940s and early 1950s included Welcome Wilson (a former member of the UH System Board of Regents), Johnny Goyen (a former Houston City Councilman) and Jack Valenti (former press secretary to President Lyndon B. Johnson and head of the Motion Picture As-
sociation of America). The students’ spring obsession, Frontier Fiesta, continued in the late 1950s with additional administrative oversight. In the fall of 1958, President Clanton Williams informed the students that they could spend only four weeks on the event and only full–time University students with at least a 2.0 GPA could participate. A multitude of variables arose near the end of the decade, and these issues forced the flamboyant carnival to come to a halt in 1959.
Replaced by rodeo
The void left by Frontier Fiesta, which was not only a huge benefit for the University but a tremendous economic benefit to the entire city of Houston, was filled by the Fat Stock Show. This show eventually evolved into the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, presently one of the biggest attractions to the city. On the suggestion of David Keith, the Vice President for Advancement, Frontier Fiesta resumed more than 30 years later in 1992. Fiesta’s revival came in spring 1992 as a student and alumni event with the help of enthusiastic alumni such as Rusty Hruska and Glenn Lilie. Keith supplied the food, barbecuing on his own personal grill, and Lilie provided labor from

The program expanded to include a petting zoo, wagon rides and Little Wrangler Day, which flourished as bus loads of elementary and middle school students came to be entertained on Saturday of Fiesta weekend. The University participated with several colleges hosting receptions during Fiesta. In 2001, Frontier Fiesta moved to the west side of Robertson Stadium to make room for the construction of the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. In 2017, Fiesta moved to Lots 20A&C.

Revival of a UH tradition
Frontier Fiesta was held behind the Baptist Student Ministries building in 1995 and 1996. In 1997, Fiesta was transferred to the southeast corner of University Boulevard and Calhoun Road, the current location of the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The rugged, unpaved terrain provided a level of authenticity that was only unappreciated when it rained. A wooden pedestrian bridge with engraved nameplates honored past Fiesta Chairmen.
Frontier Fiesta continues to be a cherished tradition at UH. Now, decades since the event’s inception and 26 years since its revival in 1992, UH again invites the community to join in the celebration. This year, Frontier Fiesta is focusing largely on the diversity of the event to be more inclusive of every student at the University of Houston and the entire Houston Community. In this effort, Frontier Fiesta this year has two carnival rides free to all student attendees. Frontier Fiesta also has a variety of food options in the food court. Enjoy Frontier Fiesta 2018, and enjoy all that the University’s oldest tradition has to offer!

Student groups present variety shows
V
ariety Shows are one of the oldest elements of Frontier Fiesta. The Variety Shows of the 1940s and 1950s produced such stars as actor James Garner, singer Kenny Rogers, and choreographer Patsy Swayze. While a variety show production requires a great deal of work, it is one of the most rewarding activities at Frontier Fiesta. Variety Shows are musical in nature and may be based on Broadway shows and big screen hits. Because of the heavy workload required to produce a show, organizations usually team up to make them happen. While performances change every year, the names of many shows date back to the original days of Frontier Fiesta.
