PAW PRINTS: A HISTORY OF SHASTA 1947–1962
Shasta I held the post the longest, from 1947 to 1962, when she was retired.
1962–1965
Shasta II’s reign was the shortest because of an unruly attitude and was the first cougar to reside in Shasta’s Den, a small cage located in the southeast corner of Lynn Eusan Park.
1965–1977
Shasta III, a.k.a. “The Lady”, may have been the most famous. “The Lady” was featured in commercial spots for American Motors before illnesses forced her retirement.
1977–1980
Shasta IV, a.k.a. “Baby Shasta” claimed the post when she was just 11 weeks old. However, when “Baby” grew up, the Cougar Guard could not control her. So, “Baby Shasta” retired in 1980 at the ripe old age of three.
1980–1989
Shasta V, the final live cougar, was mascot for nine years before she was put to sleep because of kidney failure.
PRESENT
In December of 2011 an orphaned male cougar cub arrived at the Houston Zoo. The new cub gave us the opportunity for a unique collaboration between UHAA and the Houston Zoo. In honor of this partnership, this new cub has been named “Shasta,” the traditional name of the UH cougar mascot. The new Shasta VI will serve as an ambassadors for UH, guarding the rings the night before the class ring ceremony and appearing via webcam for UH events.

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON
MARCH 24–26, 2016
KNOW YOUR TRADITIONS Traditions
Frontier Fiesta was founded in 1939. The event was discontinued during World War II and resumed in 1947 through 1959. The current Frontier Fiesta was reestablished in 1991 and continues today. In the 1950s, the event attracted up to 200,000 visitors and was dubbed the “Greatest College Show on Earth” by LIFE magazine. Despite many challenges and changes in venue over the years, Frontier Fiesta continues to be a cherished tradition at the University of Houston. The talent and leadership ability of its students, the opportunity to educate Houston’s future leaders, and providing scholarship opportunities for deserving students are just a few ways that Fiesta gives back.
Scholarships
Every year, the Frontier Fiesta Association gives scholarships to deserving incoming freshman and current UH students. These scholarships not only reward academic achievement, but also recognize outstanding efforts in community service. Forms and scholarship information are online at www.uh.edu/fiesta.
Mr. & Mrs. Fiesta
The Mr. and Ms. Fiesta competition is a fundraiser benefiting the scholarships awarded by the Frontier Fiesta Association. Each year Frontier Fiesta awards scholarships to incoming freshman based not only on academic and community achievements, but also recognizes outstanding
@frontierfiesta
@uhfrontierfiesta
efforts in leadership. The candidates who raise the most money for the community will be crowned with the title of Mr. and Ms. Fiesta. Mr. and Ms. Fiesta attend a ribbon cutting ceremony, which opens Fiesta City to the UH Community, and serve as honorary judges for the CookOff competition. Applications and information can be found at www.uh.edu/fiesta and through Frontier Fiesta social media.
Cook-Off
The Cook–Off is the largest source of community participation at Frontier Fiesta. Over thirty teams from alumni associations and outside organizations come to compete in the six categories of pinto beans, beef brisket, chicken, chili, fajitas and pork ribs. Trophies are awarded to the first, second and third place of each category, and in addition to a trophy, for the brisket category, a $1,000 cash prize is awarded for first place, $600 cash prize for second place and $400 cash prize for third place. Trophies and cash prizes are awarded at a ceremony held on the last night of Fiesta. Cook off rules, regulations and forms are at www.uh.edu/fiesta.
