Frontier Fiesta March 20-22, 2014
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Welcome to Frontier Fiesta 2014! As chairman of this year’s Board of Directors, I am honored to welcome you to this year’s event, celebrating 74 years since the inception of Frontier Fiesta in 1939. Over the past year, the Frontier Fiesta Executive Board, our numerous assistant directors, and our countless volunteers and supporters have worked tirelessly to put together an event worthy of its title as the greatest tradition at the University of Houston. Encompassed within that title is the respect for all facets of the University: its distinguished faculty and staff, the community in which it resides, the extraordinary alumni it produces, and of course, the students who make it what it is and who are in turn molded by it. We feel we have organized an event all of these groups can enjoy together. This year, we are offering largerthan-life concert headliners throughout the weekend in addition to almost a dozen local and regional artists every day to satisfy all musical tastes. For the first time, Frontier Fiesta has established a student-driven (but make no mistake, open to everyone!) entertainment area, the Bud Light Pavilion, featuring many of these musical performers, student performances and organization showcases, food, movie showings, cultural exhibits and more. For the first time, we will be using our Fiesta City centerpiece, City Hall, as a space for alumni to return to campus , reconnect with fellow alumni and enjoy themselves. However, much of the event looks the same as it has for a very long time. You’ll still be able to walk through Fiesta City and see the beautifully constructed fronts meant to resemble a classic, fully functional western town. Within these fronts and throughout the midway, you can see the incredible Broadway-style variety shows or enjoy the many carnival booths created and operated by students. You will still smell the sweet aroma of barbecue from our world-class cook-off competition all weekend. Enjoy these great festivities, see a show, learn about cultures from around the world and more, all in support of the many scholarships we give to graduating high school students for exceptional leadership qualities to attend the University of Houston. We at Frontier Fiesta do all of this for them for you. We seek to represent the community, tradition, and spirit that UH stands for, through giving, camaraderie, and entertainment for all. The only thing we ask is that you support the Cougars. I hope you enjoy this weekend as much as the Board and I have enjoyed putting it together. With Cougar pride, I present the greatest college show on Earth. — Hunter Lewis
A tried and true tradition at UH Frontier Fiesta saw its start in 1939. After a hiatus during World War II, Fiesta resumed in 1947 and ran through 1959. The tradition of Frontier Fiesta returned in 1992 and continues to this day. Dr. Walter Kemmerer, second in command to UH President E.E. Oberholtzer, is particularly remembered as the founder and greatest champion of Frontier Fiesta. After years off during the war, Kemmerer pushed to get Fiesta back into full swing, and the event reached national recognition in 1953. By that time, Frontier Fiesta was drawing huge crowds of up to 200,000 people, including celebrities such as James Garner, Humphrey Bogart, and more. Tall task By the late 1950s, Frontier Fiesta consumed months of students’ attention and significant fundraising to create what Life Magazine called the “Greatest College Show on Earth” in 1958. The student leaders behind Frontier Fiesta in the 1940s and early ’50s included Welcome Wilson (a former member of the UH System Board of Regents), Johnny Goyen (a former Houston City Councilman) and Jack Valenti (former press secretary to President Lyndon B. Johnson and head of the Motion Picture Association of America). The students’ spring obsession, Frontier Fiesta, continued in the late 1950s with additional administrative
What is Frontier Fiesta? Frontier Fiesta is a student-led spring festival established in 1939. It began as a festival to promote the University when it moved from downtown Houston to its present location. Frontier Fiesta has grown into a diverse showcase of the talents of UH’s student body. Each year students from various organizations volunteer to assist the Frontier Fiesta Association in transforming a piece of our campus into a fully functional town called Fiesta City. This event is a major production that takes the cooperation of the students, staff, and faculty of UH. Make it a tradition to be a part of our University’s oldest tradition and come out to Fiesta every spring! oversight. In the fall of 1958, President Clanton Williams informed the students that they could spend only four weeks on the event and only full–time University students with at least a 2.0 GPA could participate. A multitude of variables arose near the end of the decade, and these issues forced the flamboyant carnival to come to a halt in 1959. Replaced by rodeo The void left by Frontier Fiesta, which was not only a huge benefit for the University but a tremendous economic benefit to the entire city of Houston, was filled by the Fat Stock Show. This show eventually evolved into the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, presently one of the biggest attractions to the city. On the suggestion of David Keith, the Vice President for Advancement, Frontier Fiesta resumed more than
30 years later in 1992. Fiesta’s revival came in spring 1992 as a student and alumni event with the help of enthusiastic alumni such as Rusty Hruska and Glenn Lilie. Keith supplied the food, barbequing on his own personal grill, and Lilie provided labor from his personal company to get Fiesta City built. Revival of a UH tradition Frontier Fiesta was held behind the Baptist Student Ministries building in 1995 and 1996. In 1997, Fiesta was transferred to the southeast corner of University Boulevard and Calhoun Road, the current location of the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The rugged, unpaved terrain provided a level of authenticity that was only unappreciated when it rained. A wooden pedestrian bridge with engraved nameplates honored past Fiesta Chairmen.

The program expanded to include a petting zoo, wagon rides and Little Wrangler Day, which flourished as busloads of elementary and middle school students came to be entertained on Saturday of Fiesta weekend. The University participated with several colleges hosting receptions during Fiesta. In 2001, Frontier Fiesta moved to the west side of Robertson Stadium to make room for the construction of the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. In 2013, Fiesta moved temporarily to Lots 20A&B during the stadium build. Lasting impact on campus Despite the changes in venue and themes and challenges over the years, Frontier Fiesta continues to be a cherished tradition at UH. Now, decades since the event’s inception and 22 years since its revival in 1992, UH again invites the community to join in the celebration. Frontier Fiesta celebrates everything that makes UH important to the Houston. The talent and leadership ability of its students, the opportunity to educate Houston’s future leaders and providing scholarship opportunities for deserving students mark just a few ways that Frontier Fiesta gives back and makes an impact.

CONCERT
Star-studded nights
Buxton
The Suffers
7 p.m. Thursday, Bud Light Stage Buxton, who Esquire.com calls one of “2012 Artists to Watch,” tours in support of their New West Records debut album “Nothing Here Seems Strange.” Buxton’s music is a study in contrasts: rock and folk, subtle yet eccentric, lush harmonies over prickly guitar. Buxton’s fusion of lovely harmonies, jarring explosions of energy and meticulously applied instrumentation is led by Sergio Trevino on Vocals/Guitar with Jason Willis on lead Guitar/Mandolin, Chris Wise on Bass Guitar, Justin Terrell on Drums and Austin Sepulvado on Guitar/Vocals.
9 p.m. Thursday, Bud Light Stage The Suffers are a 10-piece band from Houston who are redefining the sound of Gulf Coast soul, intertwining elements of classic American soul with rock and roll. The large ensemble packs each position of the rhythm section and horn section with a level of talent and taste that provides the perfect foundation for singer Kam Franklin’s voice. The Suffers’ award-winning live show forces people onto the dance floor with high-energy cuts.
A Great Big Young Mammals World 8 p.m. Thursday, Main Stage Houston, TX’s Young Mammals effortlessly craft noisy, jaggedly dark pop songs. The band, led by guitarist Cley Miller and Vocalist Carlos Sanchez and buoyed by the propulsive rhythm section of Jose Sanchez and Justin Terrell, was started as a bedroom project in 2005. Since their inception, they’ve developed a rabid local following, and they’re ready for more. Young Mammals’ latest 7” is out via Odd Hours on November 5th, 2013, and they’re currently prepping for their debut fulllength, slated for a 2014 release. Young Mammals will be live at Frontier Fiesta Match 20th at 8PM
10 p.m. Thursday, Main Stage New York pop singer-and-songwriter duo A Great Big World — Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino — treasure the precious bond between artist and listener. Their full-length debut for Epic Records, “Is There Anybody Out There?,” forges an unbreakable link in that emotional chain. A Great Big World performed their song “Say Something” with Christina Aguilera on NBC’s “The Voice,” and that version hit No. 1 on iTunes. The same thing occurred after a performance at the American Music Award. They closed out the year at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, followed
up by sold-out New Year’s Eve gigs suppporting Maroon 5.
Kydd Jones 7 p.m. Friday, Bud Light Stage Kydd Jones comes from Texas, but ut his style is unlike that of any other er Southern artist. As a talented rapper and outstandding singer-songwriter, Kydd’s lyrical yet et catchy compositions cross the borders rs of both R&B and hip-hop. Kydd is a three-time South by Southwest Showwcase artist.
Chiddy Bang 9 p.m. Friday, Bud Light Stage Chiddy Bang is an American alterrnative hip-hop band from Philadelphia. a. The group consists of Chidera ra “Chiddy” Anamege and Noah “Xaaphoon Jones” Beresin. Their sound is based on the fusion of hip hop and nd unique sample choices from alternaative leaning artists such as Radioohead, Sufjan Stevens, Passion Pit, and nd MGMT.

and genre lines continue to be erased, the climate is ripe for “rappers” to redefine that job title and make the world conform to them. Leading that charge is B.o.B, aka Bobby Ray. B.o.B introduced himself to the world in 2006 with his mixtape Cloud 9, and has since traveled the world, topped the charts and broken barriers that the music world didn’t know existed. Now with his sophomore album “Strange Clouds,” the six-time Grammy nominated rapper/songwriter is on a quest to show his float to the top is no fluke. The proof is in the tracklisting where the international superstar balances duets with everyone from Lil’ Wayne on the album’s platinum title track, which landed at No. 1 on iTunes upon its release, to the Dr. Luke-produced “Both Of Us,” which sees B.o.B rapping opposite Taylor Swift. Just as he proved on his gold-certified debut album, “B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray” with his multi-platinum, breakout hits “A i r p l a n e s” featuring Haley Williams of Paramore, and “Nothing On You” featuring Bruno Mars, which was nominated for “Record Of The Year” at the 2010 Grammy Awards, B.o.B flies well with passengers. But, it’s the solo flights on “Strange Clouds” that show that he is one of the greats of his time. The Atlanta native shines on tracks like the intro “Bombs Away” where he raps “you think you know me, but you ain’t seen the half of me.” He then addresses people who think they know him and those that actually do with “Where Are You (B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray)” where he pens a narrative reminiscent of Eminem’s “Stan.” B.o.B. will bring his award-winning soun

Green River Ordinance
9 p.m. Saturday, Bud Light Stage Over the decade-long journey from their first incarnation as 13and 14- year-old kids in Fort Worth to the upcoming release of their latest EP, “Chasing Down the Wind,” Green River Ordinance has evolved steadily. GRO’s intensity and strong fan connection prompted EMI to sign them to Capitol Records, and in 2009, the band’s debut album, “Out of My Hands,” shot to the top of the Billboard charts and catapulted their two singles “Come On” and “On Your Own” into the Top 40.
Love and Theft 10 p.m. Saturday, Main Stage Love and Theft may be celebrat-
ing the release of their second studio album, but to the Academy of Country Music-nominated country duo, the self-titled release might as well be their first. And in a way, it is. Love and Theft is Stephen Barker Liles and Eric Gunderson’s first album since joining RCA Nashville, the home to many of their musical inspirations. Their excitement is palpable throughout the 11 songs that comprise the album, a fluid mix of country melodies and sing-along choruses, all driven by Gunderson’s earthy voice and Liles’ high-altitude tenor. “We sound like brothers when we sing,” Gunderson said. “Stephen and I have always been on the same page as far as the vision for the band, and we feel like we have made the record we’ve always wanted to make.” Love and Theft is a nod to the duo’s varied influences. “She’s Amazing” evokes the brilliant harmonies
of the Eagles. The seductive “Amen” channels all the yearning of Roy Orbison. And the rollicking first single “Angel Eyes”—which scored the twosome their first Country Music TV Music Awards nomination for Duo Video of the Year—brings to mind Elvis Presley’s “(You’re the) Devil in Disguise.” Love and Theft certainly have a knack for crafting sharp hooks. Whether they’re writing for themselves or for other artists, Stephen and Eric are well-versed in the ingredients necessary for a hit. With a renewed emphasis on organic sounds, their self-titled second album has brought Love and Theft closer to what it set out to be: a band that writes, records and performs honest, soulful country music. “This record represents the way we sound live,” Liles said. “It shows a more mature, evolved Love and Theft.”
J Jeff Al Allen
8 p.m. Saturday, Main Stage A Texas Texas-born artistwith a riveting stage presence and st an uncanny gift for penning heart-piercing lyrics, Jeff Allen has a rare ability to blur the lines between ou outlaw attitude and mainstream acc accessibility, which has earned him a legion of devoted fans and a deal with Sony/ATV Publishing. Allen has crafted a compelling collection of tunes that reverberate with the ache of lost love and celebrate the simple joys of life. Allen’s ability to combine rock and rroll swagger with country music candor has always can served him well. Frontier Fiesta will close with a performance fitting of its Western feel. Country duo Love and Theft will perform on the Main Stage on Saturday night as the final musical act of a Fiesta jam-packed with entertainment.
