Frontier Fiesta March 24-26, 2016

Message from the Chairman

elcome to Frontier Fiesta 2016! As the Chairman of this year’s Board of Directors, I am honored to welcome you to our annual Frontier Fiesta. This year we are celebrating 77 years since the event’s inception in 1939. Over the past year, the Frontier Fiesta Association, Frontier Fiesta Alumni Network and mentors, UH staff, and our countless volunteers have worked tirelessly to put together an event worthy of its recognition as the greatest tradition at the University of Houston and its title of “Greatest College Show on Earth” by Life Magazine. Included within that title is the respect for all aspects of the University: its distinguished faculty and staff, the community in which it resides, the incredible and dedicated alumni it produces, and last but certainly not least, the students who make Frontier Fiesta possible. The Board of Directors and I feel like this year, we have truly organized an event that is for all Cougars and Houstonians. This is the second year back at lots 12A and 12B adjacent to TDECU Stadium, and the Frontier Fiesta Association has focused on expanding the event. We are offering an impressive festival that can be enjoyed by everyone at the University

of Houston and the general Houston community. This year, we have four large carnival rides including a ferris wheel that will be open all three days of the festival and free for all attendees. A western-themed city will also be built for the event, right in the TDECU Stadium parking lots! These wooden “fronts” as they are known include Willie’s Theatre, a student performance area, a general store to purchase exclusive Frontier Fiesta merchandise, and the TDECU Bank, to name a few. Frontier Fiesta also showcases student talent through both the Broadway-style variety shows and carnival games hosted by student organizations. In Willie’s Theatre, there will also be a talent show, step show, artistic showcase, and much more to highlight all of the different talent’s University of Houston students have to offer. As you go through the city, you will notice a variety of food options, local and student musical acts, and free novelty items. Be sure to stop by the Bud Light Stage located in Fiesta City to watch talented student and local performers. Rae Sremmurd will be headlining the Bud Light Stage on Saturday night, again free for all attendees! Be a part of the University of Houston pride at Frontier Fiesta by attending the Spirit of Houston Pep Rally at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday. Fiesta City

will open City Hall as a space for UH alumni to celebrate Frontier Fiesta and reconnect with fellow alumni. Frontier Fiesta will also continue the tradition of “jailing” UH students, faculty, staff, and alumni in an effort to raise money for scholarships. Individuals identified to be put in “jail” (a free standing structure located next to City Hall) will need to make “bail” to be set free.

Throughout the event, you will smell amazing food coming from our large cook off area. However, there are also plenty of spaces within Fiesta City to get amazing food. Across from the General Store there is a concessions area with lots of great food options including my favorite, turkey legs! In the concert area there will be several food trucks throughout the three days of the event. Enjoy all that there is to Frontier Fiesta! Watch a variety show, catch a showcase in Willie’s Theatre, see the headliner Rae Sremmurd perform Saturday on the Bud Light Stage, play a game at a carnival booth, ride a carnival ride, and so much more! The Frontier Fiesta Board of Directors strive to represent the community, tradition, and spirit of the University of Houston and the City of Houston throughout the event. I hope you enjoy Frontier Fiesta 2016 as much as the board and I have enjoyed putting it together. With Cougar pride, I present the greatest college show on Earth. Go Coogs!

THE FIESTA GAZETTE is the official publication of Frontier Fiesta. Layout and typesetting of the Fiesta Gazette provided by the UH Center for Student Media.

Why the Board of Directors loves Frontier Fiesta Robert Spencer, Vice-Chair Frontier Fiesta is one of the only events on campus that places emphasis bringing together the entire University of Houston community, which includes: students, alumni, faculty, staff, and the Houston area. Over the last three years of my involvement, I have been lucky to really see the transformation that Frontier Fiesta has been though and am looking forward to see the event grow even more after I graduate

Travis Wiseley, Director of Operations I love Frontier Fiesta because we get to watch what we build come to life. From the fronts we put up, to seeing all the organizations work together and collaborate. Just to see what your blood, sweat, and tears accomplished is a great feeling.

Krystel Johnson, Director of Productions Frontier Fiesta is a one of a kind unique event that you will not be able to experience anywhere else. For three days, Frontier Fiesta brings our community together so that we can celebrate the tradition of our university that we love. It gives our students something to look forward for during the semester and creates a bond between student organizations and the community. You cannot merely recreate this experience anywhere else and that is why I love Frontier Fiesta. Go Coogs!

Taylor Chan, Director of Marketing I treasure the opportunity to contribute to an event that showcases the talent and diversity of this university to one of the largest cities in the United States.

Jessica Bonds, Director of Special Events There are so many reasons to love Frontier Fiesta. I have to say my favorite thing about it is the fact that we all become a family. By working together and spending so much time together, we all grow super close. Frontier Fiesta isn’t just another organization, it’s a family.

Christian Kladzyk, Director of Performances I love Frontier Fiesta because it sets the University of Houston apart from all other universities. This festival creates an outlet to showcase brilliant organizations and our students’ superior talent and diversity that are not always easily found during our typical walks to class. Getting involved is the absolute best thing a student can do to truly grasp the full “college experience.” Fiesta allows us to expand UH tradition past simply academics and athletics and into a large, passionate student community.

Frontier Fiesta: A Tradition

rontier Fiesta saw its start in 1939. After a hiatus during World War II, Fiesta resumed in 1947 and ran through 1959. The tradition of Frontier Fiesta returned in 1992 and continues to this day. Dr. Walter Kemmerer, second in command to UH President E.E. Oberholtzer, is particularly remembered as the founder and greatest champion of Frontier Fiesta. After years off during the war, Kemmerer pushed to get Fiesta back into full swing, and the event reached national recognition in 1953. By that time, Frontier Fiesta was drawing huge crowds of up to 200,000 people, including celebrities such as James Garner, Humphrey Bogart, and more.

Tall task

By the late 1950s, Frontier Fiesta consumed months of students’ attention and significant fundraising to create what Life Magazine called the “Greatest College Show on Earth” in 1958. The student leaders behind Frontier Fiesta in the 1940s and early 1950s included Welcome Wilson (a former member of the UH System Board of Regents), Johnny Goyen (a former Houston City Councilman) and Jack Valenti (former press secretary to President Lyndon B. Johnson and head of the Motion Picture Association of America). The students’ spring obsession, Frontier Fiesta, continued in the late 1950s with

day of Fiesta weekend. The University participated with several colleges hosting receptions during Fiesta. In 2001, Frontier Fiesta moved to the west side of Robertson Stadium to make room for the construction of the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. In 2013, Fiesta moved temporarily to Lots 20A&B during construction of TDECU stadium.

additional administrative oversight. In the fall of 1958, President Clanton Williams informed the students that they could spend only four weeks on the event and only full–time University students with at least a 2.0 GPA could participate. A multitude of variables arose near the end of the decade, and these issues forced the flamboyant carnival to come to a halt in 1959.

Replaced by rodeo

The void left by Frontier Fiesta, which was not only a huge benefit for the University but a tremendous economic benefit to the entire city of Houston, was filled by the Fat Stock Show. This show eventually evolved into the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, presently one of the biggest attractions to the city. On the suggestion of David Keith, the Vice President for Advancement, Frontier Fiesta resumed more than 30 years later in 1992. Fiesta’s revival came in spring 1992 as a student and alumni event with the help of enthusiastic alumni such as Rusty Hruska and Glenn Lilie. Keith supplied the food, barbecuing on his own personal grill, and Lilie provided labor from his personal company to get Fiesta City built.

Revival of a UH tradition

Frontier Fiesta was held behind the Baptist Student Ministries building in 1995 and 1996.

Frontier Fiesta This Year

In 1997, Fiesta was transferred to the southeast corner of University Boulevard and Calhoun Road, the current location of the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The rugged, unpaved terrain provided a level of authenticity that was only unappreciated when it rained. A wooden pedestrian bridge with engraved nameplates honored past Fiesta Chairmen. The program expanded to include a petting zoo, wagon rides and Little Wrangler Day, which flourished as busloads of elementary and middle school students came to be entertained on Satur-

Despite the changes in venue and themes, Frontier Fiesta continues to be a cherished tradition at UH. Now, decades since the event’s inception and 24 years since its revival in 1992, UH again invites the community to join in the celebration. This year, Frontier Fiesta is focusing largely on the diversity of the event to be more inclusive of every student at the University of Houston and the entire Houston Community. In this effort, Frontier Fiesta this year has four carnival rides and five inflatables free to all attendees. Also to give students more to do at the event, Fiesta City is open later this year so students can enjoy the event all day. Frontier Fiesta also has a variety of food options in the food court. Enjoy Frontier Fiesta 2016, and enjoy all that the University’s oldest tradition has to offer!

Frontier Fiesta March 24-26, 2016

Meet the scholarship winners Alison Tran: Aspiring doctor

Optimistic, diligent and dorky are three words that describe who I am. I am currently a senior at Pasadena Memorial High School. I am part of the Orchestra, National Honor Society, Class Officer Representative, and Business Professionals of America. I enjoy playing the violin with the guidance of my talented directors. I also have a passion for baking and cooking desserts during my free time because of my inspirational chef dad. My favorite subjects are math and science. For that reason, I plan to attend the University of Houston and major in chemistry. Not only is the university close to home, but it also has a diverse population and friendly atmosphere. I am very honored to be admitted to the University of Houston and can’t wait for the countless benefits I will acquire from this journey!

Saman Essa: Future pediatric psychologist

University of Houston was an option for me for a number of reasons: not only is it close to home, but it is also my father’s alma mater. The University of Houston and the city of Houston itself is a good fit for what I want to do as it is home to the largest refugee population in America and has one of the most advanced and prestigious medical centers in the world! I plan to double major in Psychology and Liberal Studies, the latter consisting of minors in Arabic, Global and International Studies, and Human Development & Family Studies. I hope to continue my education and pursue a doctorate degree in psychology so that, in the future, I may open a clinic dedicated to bettering the lives of children who have suffered from abuse.

Jayme Marton: Future lawyer

I am currently attending James Bowie High School in Austin. I chose to apply to the University of Houston because of its impressive dedication to research and beautiful, thriving campus. Growing up in Austin, I appreciate all the opportunities that a big city has to offer, and look forward to the next four years, being able to explore all the things Houston has waiting for me. I would like to double major in political science

2. and environmental science and would like to become a lawyer. I hope to be able to make a difference in the world someday, and help to leave the world a little better off for generations to come.

Juan Gracia: Future actor

I’m a senior at Rivera High School in Brownsville. Three years ago, through the influence of a friend, I decided to audition for my community theatre’s, Camille Playhouse, Christmas production of Shrek: The Musical, and my life has never been the same. I am currently in production of In The Heights, my seventh show at Camille (14th overall), and during the summer I am a director for Camille’s Summer Workshop. I chose the University of Houston because I believe that through the guidance of the professors at the School of Theatre and Dance, I will become the actor I’ve always dreamed of becoming.

Belen Mendoza: Future CEO

I never imagined my life would change when I started running. I imagined running being more of a physical work out than an emotional one. I had no idea that in running I would find a deeper meaning for my life and my dreams to be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Every morning I lace up my hand-me-down Brooks I close my eyes and imagine my life ten years from now. I imagine the new track I will be running on and

the marathons I’ll be training for: maybe it’ll be in Chicago, New York, Beijing or maybe here in Houston. I am not too sure yet, but what I do know is that in these very moments my life is changing. Every run brings me one step closer to achieving my goal. On the track I find myself face to face with the best and worst parts of myself. I see myself when I want to quit, but also when I break my time.

Seth Crawford: Future leader

My involvements and leadership positions have included cheering and tumbling for the University of Houston Cheerleading squad; team member for Shasta’s street team; Philanthropy and Service Chair, Vice President, and President of my fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and most recently, Cub Camp Counselor. My leadership and community involvements go beyond the UH campus. I volunteered to be the director of a program that teaches after-school gymnastics to children in Title One schools as well as International Baccalaureate schools of the world. My pursuit of higher education even in my hobbies has led me to numerous judging and coaching certifications through USA Gymnastics, as well as two leadership schools hosted by Sigma Alpha Epsilon designed to help me become an effective leader not only within the chapter but also in my everyday life.

Buy their way out of jail for a good cause

T

hroughout the three days of the event, the Frontier Fiesta Alumni Association and the Student Government Association will “jail” notable UH alumni, and current students, faculty and staff in an effort to raise money for student scholarships. All of the arrested individuals will need to make “bail” in order to be released. Please visit uh.edu/fiesta for the full Frontier Fiesta Jail schedule.

Student groups perform variety shows

V

ariety Shows are one of the oldest elements of Frontier Fiesta. The Variety Shows of the 1940s and 1950s produced such stars as actor James Garner, singer Kenny Rogers, and choreographer Patsy Swayze. While a variety show production requires a great deal of work, it is one of the most rewarding activities at Frontier Fiesta. Variety Shows are usually musical in nature and may be based on Broadway shows and big screen hits. Because of the heavy work load required to produce a show, organizations usually team up to make them happen. While the performances change from year to year, the names of many shows date back to the original days of Frontier Fiesta.

CONCERT

Rae Sremmurd performs Saturday

T

upelo, Mississippi. It’s the home of Elvis Presley, but even for those clued in on that fun fact, it’s safe to say that few, if any, know much more about the city than that. Nestled in the northeast corner of the Magnolia State, and with a population of just over 35,000, indeed, Tupelo, like most small metropolises, is easy to overlook. Rae Sremmurd - pronounced “Ray-Shrim-er,” consisting of real life brothers Slim Jimmy and Swae Lee, and newly signed to multiplatinum producer Mike WiLL Made-It’s Eardruma Records is out to change that. Slim Jimmy, 20, and Swae Lee, 19, were born in California, but moved to Tupelo at an early age, where they were raised in the notorious Ida Street housing projects, some of the worst, most crime-ridden in the state. Making matters worse, Sremmurd’s parents split while the brothers were still young, a devastating turn of events that found the brothers multiple stretches, seeking shelter in abandoned homes scattered throughout the area. For a city with little history outside of its musical heritage, and in a state where two young kids short on role models could look up to the growing star power of in-state hero David Banner, music, from a young age, became a way for Slim and Swae to escape the desperation of their surroundings. “When we were growing up, it was just about

perseverance,” says Slim Jimmy, before flipping a quote made famous by Stark Trek character Richard Wakinyan. “Regardless of the situation, we couldn’t let the haters win.” The movement started locally, with the brothers throwing parties and shows around town, often in the same abandoned buildings

where they once stayed. The pair always had larger ambitions, though, and so the brothers, natural performers since elementary school, taught themselves how to record, make beats, and DJ, building enough buzz to earn an appearance on the popular “Wild Out Wednesdays” segment dur-

ing BET’s music video countdown show, 106th & Park. Back home, Swae and Slim earned the attention of fellow Tupelo native P-Nasty, who also happens to be a producer signed to super producer Mike WiLL Made-It’s Eardruma production team. P-Nasty introduced Rae Sremmurd to Mike WiLL, and the multi-platinum producer (Rihanna, Jay Z, Kanye West, 2 Chainz, Future, Juicy J) was instantly impressed by the brothers’ energy and the quality of their music, signing the duo as one of the first acts to his new, Interscope-backed label, Eardruma Records. “When I met them,” recalls WiLL, “they just had a real young dope energy about them. So me and the Eardruma team locked in the studio like we normally do, had a lot of fun, and cooked up some amazing music. This is just the beginning of our working relationship, and they’ve got a bright future. I believe in them.” Rae Sremmurd’s first single under the Eardruma Records umbrella, “No Flex Zone,”.serves as an early taste of what Rae Sremmurd will offer fans with their forthcoming debut mixtape, SremmLife. Scheduled for release this year, the project will be executive produced by Mike WiLL Made-It. And while the tape is already being looked at as a forthcoming breakout moment for the young duo, for Rae Sremmurd, it’s just the next step in showing the world what two young brothers from Tupelo can achieve. “It’s the energy, that’s what #SremmLife is all about” says Swae Lee. “We bringing the fun back to music!”
