DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

#IAMUH

Everyone has a story. What’s yours?

If you had to tell your story in only six words, what would they be? #IAMUH is an initiative that encourages individuals to highlight the diversity within our lived experiences while celebrating the diversity that is represented and embodied at the University of Houston. Diversity is one of our strengths that we embrace and highlight and #IAMUH does just that. Students, faculty and staff differences in

culture, values, experiences and communication are what add to the University of Houston experience. There are many ways to get involved in the #IAMUH campaign. Look for pop-up #IAMUH events throughout the year, share your story at our upcoming #IAMUHSpeaks events, and/or use #IAMUH on your social media posts to highlight your contribution to diversity at the University of Houston.

Flying toward sustainability The Student Centers, in collaboration with the university’s Sustainability Committee, unveiled a multi-pronged Sustainability Campaign last Fall, using the hashtag #SCSUSTAIN. When walking through the Student Center South, you may have noticed new artwork, like the “Butterfly Garden” piece on the second floor of the building. This installation was created by UH School of Art MFA Graphic Design students – Jinyong Choi, Hibah Osman, Maryam Soltani, Derek Witucki, and Laura Hill – to share sustainability facts about the Student Centers and to transform this hallway into an interactive space. Eighty aluminum cans and 10 plastic bottles were recycled for this project to remind us that small changes can make big differences. Directions for making your own butterfly can be found here: http://www. uh.edu/studentcenters/art_display/pdf/butterfly_template_and_cutting_instruction.pdf

Another aspect of the campaign was the addition of recycling containers to public spaces and meeting rooms. “The previous custodial contract did not include recycling, so we made sure it was a priority with the new contract,” says Student Centers Director, Eve Esch. Other initiatives include Social Media contests using the hashtag, as well as a push to BYO – Bring Your Own. “We hope that folks will bring their own utensils, water bottles, etc. and are optimistic that we will see a significant reduction in the amount of trash being sent from our facilities to the landfill,” said Esch.

Dear Cougars, Welcome to your new home! We are excited for you to join our big family and confident that you will help continue our tradition of excellence as a Tier One University. We are proud to call the University of Houston my home, and hope that you too will create fond memories of your time here. As you transition into college, there are some things to remember:

Explore UH’s fraternity/sorority community Making the decision to join a Fraternity or Sorority allows one to experience leadership development that will last a lifetime, create lifelong friendships, and impact positive change on campus, the community and the world. Fraternities and sororities at the University of Houston have over 60 years of providing students with leadership opportunities, meaningful relationships, and a commitment to service and civic engagement. Our 45-plus organizations represent the diversity and energy of an exciting student body and give new Cougars access to the programs, relationships and support systems that will help them succeed at UH. The Center for Fraternity & Sorority Life is a great place to find your fit. Members of fraternities and sororities participate in Homecoming, Frontier Fiesta, other student organizations and many other

events that make our campus a great place to learn and live. Our fraternities and sororities are represented by five governing councils: Houston Panhellenic Council (HPC) Sororities, Interfraternity Council (IFC) Fraternities, Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) Fraternities and Sororities, National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Fraternities and Sororities, United Greek Council (UGC) Fraternities and Sororities. Don’t miss your opportunity to interact with fraternities and sororities, who represent the governing councils, at Greek–A–Palooza on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. in Lynn Eusan Park . This is a great way to connect. enjoy food, music, games, and fun. You can learn about and additional information on recruitment and how to join fraternities and sororities at www.uh.edu/cfsl.

1. Get involved. Whether you join Greek life, Intramural Sports or one of the 500+ student organizations, getting involved on campus is key to your success at UH, and will be pivotal to learning skills that cannot be taught in a classroom. 2. Prioritize your health. From our state-of-the-art Recreational Center, to our Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), there are an abundance of resources for you to stay mentally and physically healthy. 3. Take advantage of all the great opportunities available to you here! We are situated in one of the most amazing cities in the United States. Houston is full of interesting places to visit and things to do. Take these next few years to explore, try new things, and discover what you are passionate about. We are excited to see what you can bring to our campus. Throughout your time here, please know that Student Government Association (SGA) is here to make your experience at UH the best it can be.
