UNIVERSITY CENTER TRANSFORMATION

Creating a new campus legacy

A

fter years of planning and development, and nearly thirty months of construction, the UC Transformation Project is nearing completion, and the results are redefining campus life at the University of Houston. Phase 2 should see substantial construction in November. Phase 2 will include a new retail corridor on the first floor featuring Shasta’s Cones & More, a technology store and a Freshii, a fresh-foods organic concept restaurant. On the second floor, a completely redesigned suite of 20 meeting spaces will debut, including an upgraded Houston Room for large events. With these new conference and meeting spaces, the University Center will become a prime location for student organization meetings and events, as well as conferences and other largescale programs for the UH community. In addition, the signature studentfocused features of Phase 2 will include the new Legacy Lounge which will be a great space for students to hang out, as well as provide a space for evening programming with 3 large-screen TVs and space for approximately 200. These improvements add to the first phase of the UC Transformation Project

Explore UH’s fraternity/sorority community Making the decision to join a Fraternity or Sorority allows one to experience leadership development that will last a timeline, create lifelong friends, impact positive change on campus, the community, and the world. Fraternities and sororities at the University of Houston have over 50+ years of providing students with leadership opportunities, meaningful relationships, and a commitment to service and civic engagement. Our 40+ organizations represent the diversity and energy of an exciting student body, and give new Cougars access to the programs, relationships, and support systems that will help them succeed here at UH. The Center for Fraternity & Sorority Life (CFSL), located in the University Center North building, is a great place to start your exploration.

Members of fraternities and sororities participate in Homecoming, Frontier Fiesta, other student organizations, and many other events on campus that make our campus a great place to learn and live. Our fraternities and sororities are represented by five governing councils. They are as follows: • Houston Panhellenic Council (HPC) Sororities • Interfraternity Council (IFC) Fraternities • National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Fraternities and Sororities, • Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) • Latin Greek Council (LGC) Fraternities and Sororities. For additional information on recruitment and how to join fraternities and sororities visit www.uh.edu/cfsl .

Faith and free lunch go together at A.D. Bruce

Religion Center to mark 50th year this spring

“We’re proud to host the Free Lunch series for our Campus Ministries Association,” said Bruce Twenhafel, the manager of the A.D. Bruce Religion Center. “We’re doing more than just offering students a bite to eat in the middle of their busy class days. We’re giving them a place of refuge and an opportunity to reflect and discuss the issues of the day with participants from all faith backgrounds.” Students, Faculty and Staff are welcome. Free Lunches are offered every Wednesday during the Fall and Spring Semester from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. For more information about the Religion Center and the services it hosts, please visit www. uh.edu/adbruce.

The A.D. Bruce Religion Center will celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2015. A campus-wide committee is planning a month long series of activities and special events during February 2015. The A.D. Bruce Religion Center opened in Spring 1965 after many years of dreaming and planning for a center that would celebrate religious and spiritual diversity. The non-denomination facility was constructed and funded entirely by donations and support from the Greater Houston community. The Religion Center is named after LTG. A.D. Bruce, former Chancellor and President of the University of Houston.
