UH football’s first year in the Big 12 By James Mueller
A
new era of UH football has arrived. The Cougars, who spent the past 10 years in the American Athletic Conference, enter their inaugural season as a member of the Big 12. Dana Holgorsen, who spent eight seasons in the Big 12 as the head coach of West Virginia before taking over at UH, enters his fifth year as the Cougars’ head coach. UH went 27-20 in its first four years under Holgorsen. As a member of the Big 12, the most noticeable change will be the quality of opponents the Cougars

TCU, the 2022 national runner-up, Texas and Oklahoma State are just a few of the teams coming to TDECU Stadium in 2023 while Kansas State and Baylor are two of the marquee road games for UH. The biggest question for UH is who will start at quarterback. Lucas Coley, a 6-foot-1-inch transfer from Arkansas, spent the 2022 season backing up longtime UH starter Clayton Tune. Coley saw action three times, completing all three of his pass attempts. Coley will compete with Donovan Smith, a

UH’s running back room took a hit when Alton McCaskill, who put up historic numbers for the Cougars as a freshman in 2021 before missing the entire 2022 season with a torn ACL, entered the transfer portal. Sophomores Brandon Campbell and Stacy Sneed, who combined for 921 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground in 2022, are expected to be the Cougars’ featured running backs. Other campus resources you should know about T
By John Lomax
he University of Houston is a school known, in part, for its multicultural student body. Made up of students of all nationalities, religions and origins, the diversity of UH naturally necessitates a wide variety of campus resources. Through collaboration with external organizations and within the UH community itself, the University has managed to cobble

together a robust selection of assistance programs ranging from academic help to food and nutrition services. This article will detail some of the stand-out programs on campus. For a more detailed list of programs and services, be sure to check UH Wellness.
Cougar Closet
First opened in Spring of 2022, the Cougar Closet is a clothing bank that seeks to assist
students experiencing clothing insecurity. Operating entirely off of community donation, The Cougar Closet provides students in need with like-new to lightly used clothing. No registration is needed for students interested in taking advantage of The Cougar Closet. All students need to do is present their ID at the Closet, which is located in the extension of the Wellness Center. Their hours can vary, so be sure to check in at their instagram before going.
Cougar Cupboard
All too often do students see the cliche of the hungry college student become a
reality. With academic stress, financial concerns and a host of other factors, it can be easy for food to fall low on the priority list. The goal of the Cougar Cupboard is to create an environment where college students don’t have to choose between groceries and other expenses. Through a partnership with the Houston Food Bank, the Cougar Cupboard provides students with up to 30 pounds of groceries per week, regardless of financial status. For picky eaters or those with dietary restrictions, the Cougar Cupboard has a wide variety of nutritional options that should cater to most
diets. The Cougar Cupboard operates similarly to a grocery store in that students are allowed to select their desired products, as opposed to simply being given a bundle of groceries.
Other resources
Aside from the two already mentioned, UH offers a variety of different organizations and resources that cater to specific challenges. Students who have served in the military can sort out their education benefits with Veteran Services, or for those who need disability accommodations, the Justin Dart Student Accessibility Center can provide assistance.

Previewing UH men’s basketball A
By James Mueller
fter a dominant stint in the American Athletic Conference, which included four regular season titles, two conference tournament championships and five straight NCAA Tournament appearances, UH enters a conference widely regarded as the best in college basketball in recent years with high expectations. Despite the departure of big names including Jarace Walker, Marcus Sasser and Tramon Mark, the Cougars are expected to contend for a Big 12 title in their first year in the conference. Kelvin Sampson, who has taken the UH program to new heights since taking over as head coach in 2014, knows what it takes to win in the Big

How campus will change in the next four years T
he University of Houston campus has seen some major improvements, renovations and redesigns in the past decade. From the demolition of the Student Center Satellite, to the construction of the Tilman J. Feritta Family College of Medicine, UH has made it abundantly clear that its vision for the future of the University involves quite the facelift. Still, many projects remain on the horizon. Over the next few years, the University will be undertaking some of its most ambitious construction projects, including a planned campus overhaul as part of its centennial master plan and a new dining hall.
30 TRANSITIONS // MAY 2023
By John Lomax Keep reading to see how some of these changes will affect your life on campus.
The Hub
One of UH’s most anticipated projects, The Hub is a new dining hall expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Administrators hope The Hub will reimagine what most people think of when it comes to a college dining hall. It will feature various shops and cafes for students to choose from and a unique seating design oriented around delivering a communal dining experience. The Hub will be one of the largest dining facilities
on campus, clocking in at a considerable 41,000 square feet. Despite its size, designers have also placed an emphasis on sustainability through the use of recycled construction materials. The scale and lofty goals of The Hub make it somewhat of an ambitious proposal, and it remains to be seen whether or not the University will truly be able to transform the college dining experience. “Your home is your first place, school is your second place, and we want The Hub to be a student’s third space. They will come there to gather for fellowship and grab a quick bite,” said Christopher Caldwell,
chair of the UH food services advisory committee.
Centennial Project
As a gift to itself for the University’s 100th birthday celebration, administrators have laid out a plan to overhaul large swathes of UH’s main campus. The plan is in part motivated by the need to ‘tie together’ the campus’ recently constructed buildings in order to present a more physically cohesive campus. “We’re always building new structures, but what matters most is the connection between the buildings and the landscape,” said Christina Reick, executive director for University architecture. “What we want to focus on is creating a full experience, not just
building more.” Much of the plan is focused on developing pedestrian infrastructure and improving green spaces. In addition, the gateway project features four arches that will be built around the University’s entrances with the goal of creating
a better sense of arrival and departure to and from campus. Looking Forward As any Houstonian will tell you: Buildings come and go, but construction is forever. For the time being at least, expect big changes to campus in the near future.
