TSURU primer 2 - war memorial changi chapel museum completed 2012

The site rests outside changi chapel museum. Home to the memorialbilia of prisoners of war, it serves as a respite for relatives and visitors who wish to remember the series of event s and people involved. The memorial was inspired by the life of choo kim seng a survivor of war. The form of the

memorial was adopted by an origami crane, a symbol of peace and hope. Spaces were arranged in a procession of emotions namely sorrow, solace and hope. At a distance, a violent shard pierces through the wing evoking a preluding sadness towards the memorial.

UNTITLED CUBE prelude 2 - art installation completed 2013

This installation challenges Tara Donovan’s philosophy in which nature can be recreated through artificial means. The central idea of this installation is essentially an attempt to question, challenge and adapt this viewpoint.

With the rapid increase of technology, personal privacy diminishes. Personal privacy then becomes no longer of relative importance to people. Some may even perc eive cameras the same way they perceive nature - as normal, a daily occurence.

This is expressed through the use of natural materials, leaves, attempting to take on the identity of an artificial form. The nature material mimics the artificiality of a cube, almost ironic a s artificial forms cannot exist without the lost of nature.

The artificial form is representative of the the present technological world. Nature and machines are therefore polar opposites in which one will inevitably prevail over the other. Would technology overshadow and take over nature’s relation with humanity?

AT R O P H Y project 1 - dwelling completed 2014

A dwelling for an installation artist inspired by Tara Donovan. The design intention asked for a form that displaces an entity. The entity is associative and common to further the concept of displa cement. This entity ultimately took the form of a cube. The cube was divided into three levels each representing a level of the client’s hierarchy of needs.

At the bottom lies the most common of duties such as cooking and living, symbolic of man’s physical needs, placed closest to the earth, grounded. The second holds the study and masterbed room, the middle zone in which dreaming and reflection is facilitated. Finally at the top sits the studio (creation) of which is closest to the sky.

Tara Donovan is an installation artist that uses everyday mundane artificial materials to create new forms that seems to mimic nature.

to crumble. The cube was made and placed in a static environment. Almost like a pause in atrophy.

In untitled cube, glass was laid in a timber mould piece by piece and was shattered at every addition. The result was a layered gla ss cube that almost looks as if it is about

The materiality of glass is expressed through the crakes and shards around the cube.

gate 1 As I ventured around the site, I noticed many gates and overgrown trees. The gates were previously gantries for the non existent industrial park, now deteriorated and weathered with time. The trees have grown a relationship with these man made gates by using them as supports. These inherent properties of material and nature were very honest. The relationship between man-made structures and nature was interesting and very inherent i n Ta r a D o n o v a n ’ s w o r k s a s w e l l .
