2022–2023 SEASON 1 BAND / CHAMBER AND SOLO RECITALS CHOIR / CONTEMPORARY / JAZZ MARIACHI / OPERA / ORCHESTRA PERCUSSION / SERIES AND SPECIAL EVENTS UH.EDU/MUSIC MUSICMOORES school of 2022–2023 SEASON
This year is a landmark year for the Moores School of Music and for me a swell having stepped out of retirement to temporarily lead the Moores School of Music. As is befitting the fourth largest city in the U.S., we have some of the finest musicians in the world at the University of Houston, some of whom you will see performing here as well as in the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, and many other wonderful performing groups around the city. They have a legacy to pass on to students who are on the road to becoming master musicians. I’m very privileged to be able to watch and present this season that is also highlighted by the new opera productions under the incoming Director of Opera, Larry Edelson. Mariachi Pumas continues to grow, with Director José Longoria, while directing a two-week summer camp of 80 middle and high school mariachi students, having the honor of July 19, 2022, named by the City of Houston as José Longoria Day. These are only two of the highlights of the season as our Symphony Orchestra, Aura Contemporary Music Ensemble, Bands, Choirs, Jazz and Percussion Ensembles will dazzle audiences through the revelation of great talent and great music. Please join us for a breakout season of music and say hello. I’ll be there.
A Message from the Director
Warm Regards, Steven Block Interim Director, The Moores School of Music

UH MOORES SCHOOL OF MUSIC6
The Moores Opera House is the Moores School of Music's premier venue. The Opera House was designed to emulate the acoustic space of an old European opera house while providing the modern equipment demanded in today’s world. Boasting an enormous orchestra pit, full fly capacity and state-of-the-art sound equipment, it allows performances of large-scale operas while still maintaining a sense of intimacy. It gives young voices a chance to develop properly by not subjecting them to the demands of an acoustically unforgiving large hall. Featuring a movable, flexible-size orchestra shell, it also serves as the performance space for our orchestra, wind ensembles, choral groups, and chamber music. Visually the opera house boasts a masterpiece by artist Frank Stella that attracts visitors from around the globe.

CHORAL RECITAL HALL
CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL
CHAMBER AND SOLO Performing Spaces
Christ Church Cathedral, conveniently located in downtown Houston, is Moores' partner for chamber music near downtown venues and restaurants. In addition to the beautiful Cathedral, the well-appointed Sanders Hall is ideal for chamber music performances.
The Dudley Recital Hall has delightful acoustics, but is a more intimate space than the majestic Moores Opera House, seating just over 200 audience members, making it ideal for students, faculty, and guest artist performances, as well as for lecture-recitals and guest lectures.
The Choral Recital Hall provides our choirs with an exceptional workspace, but also serves as a beautiful forum for intimate recitals. Like Dudley and the Opera House, the hall is equipped with a New York Steinway concert grand piano and provides an excellent acoustic experience.

The A. I. Lack Master Series in the University of Houston's Moores School of Music presents distinguished classical performers and pedagogues annually in a series of free public masterclasses and recitals. The endowment that supports the series was established in memory of Abram I. Lack in 1989. Lack's daughter, legendary violinist and teacher, Fredell Lack Eichhorn, held the C. W. Moores Professor of Violin at the University of Houston, where she served for 50 years until her retirement in 2009.

The members of Formosa Quartet – Jasmine Lin, Wayne Lee, Che-Yen (Brian) Chen, and Deborah Pae – have established themselves as leading solo, chamber, and orchestral musicians. With degrees from the Juilliard School, Curtis Institute of Music, and New England Conservatory, they have performed in major venues throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe, and have been top prizewinners in prestigious competitions such as the Paganini, Primrose, Fischoff, Naumburg, and Tertis competitions. As chamber musicians, they have appeared regularly at the Marlboro, Kingston, Santa Fe, and Ravinia festivals, as well as at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, La Jolla Summerfest, and the Seattle Chamber Music Society. They hold a deep commitment to championing Taiwanese music, and promoting the arts in Taiwan, and has expanded to include the exploration of the rich folk traditions and heritages found in America today, and an insatiable search for the fresh and new in string quartet expression. As frequent Artists-in-Residence at the University of Houston, their impact reaches beyond the campus activities to performances with the Asia Society and collaborations with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
Each year, MSM invites leading professionals to come to campus for a series of events. This may include performances, masterclasses, private coachings, lectures, and collaborative rehearsals. Residencies are not only an opportunity to experience the highest level of the craft, they are also network openings for students who will soon join the rank of professional musicians. Students work one-on-one in the art of musical expression and gain mentorship in the process. Whether our guests are here for a few days or a few weeks, Artists-in-Residence bring the wide world of live music performance to our doorstop.

EUPHONIA! INTERSECTION OF MUSIC AND ART

This exclusive course takes you into unseen corners of the College of the Arts: the costume shop and theatrical lighting lab; up into the ecstatic universe of Frank Stella's Moores Opera House mural; inside a priceless piano; and out onto the football field with the marching band drill designer.
