Beethoven The Ruins of Athens: Turkish March and Overture For all his output and acclaim in the realm of absolute music, Beethoven also made quite a number of contributions to incidental music. One such contribution, represented here by two excerpts, is The Ruins of Athens, commissioned for the 1812 opening of the new imperial theatre in Pest. As was common at the time, the work borrows the scaffolding of faux Greek drama to score points with a political figure – in this case, Franz II. The play by August von Kotzebue centers the action around Athena, who upon waking from sleep finds her beloved Athens occupied by the (Turkish) Ottoman Empire. Joining forces with – who else – Emperor Franz II, she opens the new theater in Pest, establishing it and the city as a new Athens worthy of her newly-transferred affections. While the work as a whole is rarely performed, save in occasional Beethoven anniversary revivals and efforts such as that made in 1924 when none other than Strauss and Hofmannsthal created their own version, the overture and Turkish March remain the best-known excerpts.
Schubert Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished” Schubert’s Eighth Symphony is perhaps his best-known piece. Certainly much ink has been spilled in speculation of why the composer never finished the final two movements. Some leading hypotheses paint the composer as almost distracted; Brian Newbould argues that the intended finale was instead used for Rosamunde, and another suggestion finds his attention diverted toward the Wanderer Fantasy. Others colorfully posit that Schubert’s first bout with syphilis took place as he was writing the first two movements, and poisoned them by association. In any case, subsequent musicologists and composers have put forward various “completions” usually based on abandoned sketches for a scherzo and the (completed) Rosamunde entr’acte, with varying degrees of success.
Beethoven Coriolan Overture, Op. 62 In 1802 playwright Heinrich Joseph von Collins presented to Vienna Coriolan, a retelling of the Shakespeare play Coriolanus. The play was well received, but after a few years naturally dropped off the radar of theater-goers. It received a one-night-only revival in 1807 at the palace of Prince Lobkowitz, the noted patron of Beethoven, with the composer’s newly-written overture stealing the show. The play and the overture alike (the latter of which has over the last few centuries endured much better than the play) seem to mirror the popular conception of Beethoven himself, as a man tormented by duty but determined to buck the constraints of an unjust system. Thus in the music we hear two main themes: one stormy, representing the central hero and his quest, and the next the hero’s mother, begging Coriolan to not invade Rome.
Mozart Piano Concerto No. 5, K. 175 Mozart’s D major piano concerto, written in 1773 when the composer was just 18, is actually the first of his such works to be truly original, and not based on preëxisting themes by other composers. For comparison, see the first four concerti, which trace their provenance to existing works by Rapuach, Schobert, Eckard, and C.P.E. Bach. With a pair of trumpets included in the orchestration, the concerto is particularly festive, and its demonstration of the composer’s deft hand at orchestration and use of contrapuntal textures foreshadows his own late works. Mozart seems to have maintained a soft spot for this early concerto, keeping it in his active repertoire into the next decade (but replacing the final movement with an alternate Rondo).

Anna-Maria Gkouni, Conductor Anna-Maria Gkouni is an orchestral conductor, classical pianist and piano instructor. Her musical interests cover a span of genres, from classical to jazz and traditional folk music, as well as more electronic and progressive sounds. “Exploring the depths of the pianistic literature”, she has performed in venues in Greece, Germany and USA. Alongside solo repertoire she engages in projects of chamber music and collaborating with orchestras. Among her professional engagements, she was recently appointed the Music Director and Conductor of Conroe Symphony Orchestra. A native of Athens, she holds a piano performance and a music theory degree from Philippos Nakas Conservatory. Gkouni has earned her MA in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Nebraska Lincoln, having received a full tuition scholarship, and currently she is pursuing her DMA in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Houston. Among her awards are the Schissler Foundation Fellowship, the University of Houston Graduate Tuition Fellowship. In 2020 she was awarded the Hellenic Professional Society of Texas Award. Her greatest aspiration for the future is to be able to form a new ensemble for contemporary and classical music and create innovative shows that will combine multiple forms of art. This links to theater, which is her second passion. She is interested in the Stanislavski method and its potential for application on performers of music. About her Hellenic heritage, Anna Maria says: “Greece for me is an inspiration for my art; the colours, the light, the smells and the sounds of Greece and its people, form an emotional amalgam that triggers my memories and is distilled in my music.”
