E D ITO R ' S N OTE Tēnā koutou readers. Our most consistent feedback is that you would like to see more content from our librarians - what they're reading and what they do. Wonderful! They will be sharing more with you - as much as they can without impacting their work. I can't stress enough how much your librarians do. Upper Hutt libraries punch well above their weight, and it's thanks to the work that these incredible people put in every day, often unseen and unthanked, but absolutely necessary. So keep an eye out for fun new features as I chase the team! Simon Hartman

Building consents for the strengthening of the Upper Hutt Central Library building have been lodged. There has been extensive input into the proposed remedial works by structural and mechanical engineers, fire consultants, architects, contractors, and Council staff. Work is expected to commence on the building in August 2018, after Council approval, with an anticipated completion date of late December 2018.
"Work is expected to commence on the building in August 2018"
Test drilling is underway at two sites behind the Central Library building and the Council Civic Centre. We hope to find a solid base before the 60 metre mark as this would potentially mean the ground conditions could be graded ‘C,’ as opposed to the current assumption of ‘D.’ Ground conditions graded at ‘C‘ would have a positive impact on the works required for strengthening of buildings and any additional building work, such as the upcoming Expressions Whirinaki extension. The table below indicates how ground can be classified and what it means: Soil class
Description

GAIL MAIL Gail is our Access and Content Team Leader, and keeps a watchful eye on the Library's many collections. Kind of like the Eye of Sauron in Lord of the Rings, but with a much stronger focus on buying books and being nice! Gail loves collecting interesting
facts about books and authors, and will be sharing one with you every now and again. Take it away, Gail: Did you know that Jessica Blair is a pseudonym for Bill Spence? So all those romantic family sagas were actually written by a man - it obviously doesn't influence the writing,
but isn't it interesting that we have authors like Joanne Rowling who wrote as J.K. Rowling to hide being female, and then male authors who disguise the fact that they're men. These days book authors are displayed bigger than their title - how you picture the author might influence your reading choices more than you think

MAGALI E AC C ES S AN D C ONTENT LI B R AR IAN Magalie is responsible for our great nonfiction collection - and, it seems, is a historical fiction buff on the side! The Bernicia Chronicles is a great read if you enjoy historical fiction set in England in the Dark Ages. It’s a fascinating time in the making of the British Isles when Paganism clashes with Christianity, invaders ruthlessly carve new kingdoms, and men live and die for honour and riches. In the first book, The Serpent Sword, Beobrand discovers that his brother has died in strange circumstances. Is it really suicide, or senseless murder? I avidly followed his quest to avenge his sibling, his struggles to become a worthy warrior, and his
blossoming romance with a beautiful maiden. The second book gets even better and I couldn’t wait to lay my hands on the third, which didn’t disappoint (gore and all). Perfect if you’re interested in the reign of King Oswald of Northumbria, but don't feel like deciphering the writings of Venerable Bede, a contemporary monk and scholar who chronicled the era. We also have other books and DVDs to accompany the series. For example, if you want to know more about Saint Oswald, you can read The King in the North: the life and times of Oswald of Northumbria, watch the T V series The Last kingdom or, of course, Vikings

If you’ve come along to any of our children’s events then you have probably met me already either dancing around at Tiny Tots or having fun running something crafty! I'm an avid reader of children’s and YA (Young Adult) fiction, and I particularly enjoy fantasy. (the first book in his four-part Inheritance Cycle) which is in our Teen Fiction section. It follows the story of a seemingly regular teenage boy whose world gets turned upside down when he finds a dragon egg in the forest - a discovery that will set his whole life course. Set in a vivid fantasy world very different from our own, it is an exceptional tale of heroes and villains, magic, and the bond between dragon and rider, told in Tolkienlike detail that will ignite a spark in any fantasy reader’s imagination. Find it on the shelf with a shiny gold Librarian’s Choice sticker on it!
Have you ever checked out the Fast Zones in our Children’s section? These are nonfiction books aimed at 9 -12 year olds who are reluctant readers. They are packed with awesome facts on high interest topics like Star Wars, Marvel Heroes, robots, freaky animals, and more, while still keeping to the reading levels for older age groups. We just got in a huge shipment of these last month, so get your hands on some shiny new Fast Zones today
