E D ITO R ' S N OTE Tēnā koutou, readers. I hope you've been well this winter. I had been keeping well - until a tumble on Mt Ruapehu! I've had some titanium upgrades installed, and have been spending time in the loving embrace of our health system. But I'm not upset - as a Library lover I have an immense advantage when it comes to bed rest! My sizeable stack of Library books, graphic novels and magazines has been with me throughout. I'm enjoying finding this renewed appreciation for just how lucky I am to have access to our wonderful Library. With gratitude, Simon Hartman

Are you keen to research your family tree but daunted by complicated and pricey genealogy websites? The Library offers free access to MyHeritage Library Edition, an ideal starting point for finding out about your past. Available in forty different languages, it enables you to research over 5 billion international historical records as well as more than 1.5 billion user-generated family trees. MyHeritage is perfect for beginners and the ideal complement to our popular Ancestry database. One of our volunteers, a keen genealogy enthusiast, tested the database and described the experience as “better than Christmas”. Christmas is pretty great so that's saying something! The database is accessible from the Library computers, or from home with your library card and PIN/password. Just visit our website: upperhuttlibrary.co.nz And navigate to Digital Services > Databases > MyHeritage.

Do you have a book (or magazine, DVD or CD) that you'd love to see in the Library? We may be able to get it for you! We love getting suggestions, as catering for everyone's needs is a really tricky job, particularly if we don't hear from you. There are also lots of reasons why we might not be able to purchase a suggestion, but either way we would love to know what you would like to see in your Library. Ask for a suggestion form in the Library or fill one out online at: upperhuttlibrary.co.nz/requesting-material/ W W W. U P P E R H U T T L I B R A R Y. C O . N Z

BOO K R E V I E W A review of The Subway Girls by Susie Orman Schnall, courtesy of our Library Manager, Marion. This delightful read follows two young women from different generations, 1949 and 2018, facing similar issues and emotions seventy years apart.

As we celebrate the 125th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in New Zealand it is an appropriate story to read – even if it is based in New York. It was insightful to see how social expectations and norms of the times impacted on the characters, even as they faced the same issues. The lives of the two women are cleverly entwined, albeit in a fairly predictable way, and the story is based on an actual advertising programme by the New York Subways Advertising Company, 'The Subway Girls'.

In 2017 Olivia, an advertising executive researching for a key new account for her firm, comes across the campaign and is intrigued with both the campaign and the women who feature in it. An unexpected close connection to one of the winners, Charlotte, brings the campaign alive for her. Although peppered with romance, it doesn’t take away from the two strong women, seventy years apart, balancing their lives, careers and future happiness struggles that most of us have faced.

LOU I SA LI B R ARY AS S I STANT P R OG R AM M ES AN D EVENTS Kia ora! As well as my Library assistant duties I run the More than books: Ears, Eyes and E’s book club. This book club encourages people to read across all formats, including eBooks, audiobooks, magazines and traditional books. It is held on the second Thursday of every month and new members are always welcome. My favourite genres are fantasy, science fiction, action, thriller, crime, romance and young adult. My absolute favourite authors are David Weber, Stephanie Laurens, David Eddings, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Janet Chapman and Mathew Reilly.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo is a thrilling adventure heist book. Don’t be fooled by the young adult descriptor - this book is a gritty, enthralling tale of six dangerous outcasts and their one impossible heist. Highly recommended for all heist fans! On Basilisk Station by David Weber is a fast-paced military science fiction book. Comrades, honour and fights to the death in spaceships are the winning formula for an action-packed introduction to a great science fiction series. Spartan Gold by Clive Cussler is a thrilling hunt for ancient treasure, with a cast of devious villains and psychopaths in the way. Hard to put down! W W W. U P P E R H U T T L I B R A R Y. C O . Robin Hood and King Arthur to Sigurd and Achilles, I adore classical history and the mythologies that go with them.

Hi, I’m Jayme, an assistant at our cosy Library.

Currently I'm working my way through H.P Lovecraft’s magnificent horror works. Also known as the Father of Horror, he is an inspiration for both Stephen King and George R. R. Martin.

To ask if I love books is to ask if a dragon hoards its treasure... and speaking of fantasy, it’s easily my favourite (and naturally the best) genre! From

I’ve also recently begun a reread of Bram Stoker's Dracula - so it's safe to say I'm going to be jumping at shadows all month. Anyone
