M I R AN DA S e n i o r Li b r a r i a n R e a d e r D e ve l o p m e n t Did you know that the Librarian’s Choice collection is constantly being added to, with new gems being discovered by our librarians all the time? Here are a few recently recommended titles. Murder, misadventure & miserable ends: tales from a colonial coroner’s court by Catie Gilchrist This is the story of life and death in colonial Sydney. Henry Shiell was the Sydney City Coroner from 1866 1889. In the course of his unusually long career he delved into the lives, loves, crimes, homes and workplaces of colonial Sydneysiders. The salt path by Raynor Winn The uplifting true tale of the couple who lost everything and then embarked on a journey
of salvation across the windswept South West coastline. Just days after Raynor learns that Moth, her husband of 32 years, is terminally ill, their home is taken away and they lose their livelihood. With nothing left and little time, they make the brave and impulsive decision to walk the 630 miles of the sea-swept South West Coast Path, from Somerset to Dorset, via Devon and Cornwall. The Alice network by Kate Quinn Two women, a female spy recruited to the reallife Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947, are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption. Chantel Senior Librarian: Children & Youth The children’s team have been working up a sweat in these chilly months making sure everything is ready for our third annual Beyond The Page festival! We have lots of amazing performers coming to the library including a choir! Not every day there is a choir in the library!
The last weekend of the holidays is the time I’m looking forward to the most – it’s the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and to celebrate we are making rockets out of cardboard (lots of little rockets or one big one?...you decide!) and on Sunday the 21st we are having Stormtroopers visit the library – anyone who has seen my work coffee mug will know how excited I am for that one. Hope to see you soon at the library, Chantel

H E R ITAG E C O LLECTI ON S Winter’s here! While it’s rare for it to snow in Upper Hutt this has happened on a few memorable occasions in the past. We have several photos in our Heritage Collections that capture those moments, including this one. It shows a wintry Trentham Camp barracks scene sometime in 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. Don’t forget that this and thousands of other local history images are available to browse at your convenience on our Recollect heritage website at uhcl.recollect.co.nz
