1840’s Upper Hutt To mark the 175th Anniversary this month of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, here’s a couple of pictures from the Library’s Heritage Collections. They show the earliest illustrations we hold of the Upper Hutt region made by European settlers. The first (top left) is a coloured print from a drawing by S.C. Brees, the New Zealand Company surveyor. It shows what the Upper Hutt district looked like when he travelled through it in 1843. The other is an original pencil sketch by William Swainson, a famous British ornithologist and illustrator, who settled in the Hutt Valley. Entitled “On the Fern Ground looking down Upper Hutt - 1849”, it shows a slab whare typical of the kind built by European settlers when they first arrived in the region. uhcl.recollect.co.nz
