The Month That Was: September Welcome to Marion! We are very pleased to welcome the new Manager of the Upper Hutt City Library, Marion Read. Marion comes to us with 30 years experience in library management from all over the country, including Tokoroa, Invercargill, Whangarei, Tauranga and Auckland. She is really looking forward to taking the reins in Upper Hutt: “My passion is for delivering customercentric library services through a high performing, passionate and dedicated staff. I want to deliver positive experiences for our customers from all our library touch points—online, on site and out in the community.” We are all excited to have Marion on board and can’t wait to see the positive changes she will be making.

Introducing Marion Read Manager New Library

Seed & Plant Swap! Gardening enthusiasts and local green thumbed folks came together at the library for an afternoon of plant/seed swapping and gardening discussions. The group also got to hear from the Council’s Waste Minimisation Officer, Lisa Bridson, who spoke about the benefits of composting and how to set up your own worm farm.

Dramas in Pyjamas Our Drama in Pyjamas event was another successful night of pyjama fun! Our PJ-wearing actors and actresses put on a fine show, complete with live skits and interactive games. Make sure you come along to our next pyjama event, happening on Friday the 30th of October: Pumpkins in Pyjamas!

Connecting Communities @ the Library Discovering new cultures here at the library! Upper Hutt is home to people from all around the world and with them they bring many different cultures and traditions. Here at the library, we love embracing and learning about all these different and wonderful cultures that make up our community. We recently launched a new Storytime programme running every month in the children’s area, ‘Storytime – From around the world’. Each session focuses on a different culture and is run by a person of that same nationality. The programme kicked off back in July with a German Storytime. Children were enchanted by German fairy tales and learnt some basic German words from our very own Bavarian librarian. August followed with French Storytime and September featured Dutch Storytime. Each session saw the children entertained with tales and activities from each of these amazing cultures. Make sure you check out this month’s Storytime in Spanish, on Tuesday the 20th of October at 10:30am. We also recently finished an 8-week language programme for children, called ‘Fun with German’. The programme had participants learning easy German words and phrases through fun activities for the whole family. The feedback from the programme was very positive and several families attended every session. As well as exploring cultures from around the world, we also offer regular programmes celebrating our own culture. In June we ran a Matariki Storytime to welcome and celebrate the Maori New Year. We also participated in Maori Language week with lots of stories and activities. Our October holiday programme will also be featuring several Maori activities, including learning how to make and use Poi and how to play a traditional Maori game. For more information on these activities see page 16. We also host two regular Hot Seat sessions, KASAGIP & the Upper Hutt Multicultral Council. These sessions are aimed at helping people from different cultures adjust to their new lives here in New Zealand, see page 9 for more information.

Celebrating the Rugby World Cup! In celebration of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, we thought we’d take a look back at rugby throughout the years in Upper Hutt. Reid Perkins our Community Heritage Coordinator, had a look through our archives and pulled a few of his favourite pictures of Upper Hutt residents getting behind our great national sport. Go the All Blacks!!
