I have now been in my role for just on twelve months. One of the things that has really impressed me in this time is the capability, dedication and caring attitude of the staff that we are fortunate to have within the Community Services division. The staff within the various teams that make up the division really care about their community and ensuring that ALL within the community are catered for – from working with the young in developing murals; to running workshops on funding, governance and other topics; from hot seats and computer mentoring support for all within the Library; to school holiday programmes and teen events at H2O Xtream; from support for sport, recreation and leisure from Activation; to the numerous programmes

provided by the Library that are readily accessible by all – we are indeed fortunate to have such enthusiastic, innovative and dedicated staff within the Community Services division. Many of the staff briefs within Chatter ask for you to get in touch with them if you require further information or assistance with anything. I along with staff urge you to engage or contact us if you would like to discuss anything that you think may benefit our community and/or assist you or your organisation in any way.

Get the word out on your community events! Eventfinder has become a popular online platform for groups and businesses to list their upcoming events on. We encourage all Upper Hutt event organisers to list their events, big or small on Eventfinder. This is free, and simple to do online, and provides a central event hub for those organising or attending events. Groups from the Cossie Club to the Upper Hutt City Library list their events on there as it’s an easy site for the public to search what 4 is happening across Upper Hutt.

Go to: www.eventfinder.co.nz to sign up for free. The Upper Hutt Leader runs a weekly “What’s on” listing and the public can send information to: editor@uhleader.co.nz More information on organising and promoting an event is available on the Upper Hutt City Council website: www.upperhuttcity.com/local-events

Young people from the Timberlea Youth programme were invited to attend to learn new skills and have a go at creating positive street art in a safe space. Artist Sean Duffell, worked with the group of six rangatahi aged between 12-25 years, to teach them new skills and further their artistic talents. All young people that attended the workshops had talent and potential to go far in the world of art. The youth got to design and paint a plywood

The workshops have been a major success, with our young people committing their evenings to attend. They have experienced growth and developed in their confidence and shown great mana in their work. Most of all they have had fun while enjoying each other’s company. A huge thank you to all those involved and we look forward to seeing great things from these rangatahi in our community.

Mental Health Awareness Week’s theme for 2015 is Give: “E iti noa ana, nā te aroha – it’s the giving that counts, not the size of the gift.” Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone, smile, or volunteer your time by joining a community group. It feels good to give and everybody has something to offer! Some easy Giving tips: •

Give a smile away!

While driving, stop to let a car into the traffic.

Offer to mow the grass verge of your neighbour.

If you have fruit trees pop your excess fruit out on the street with a “help yourself” sign.

Donate old toys, books, sports equipment, clothes etc to a local charity.

Offer to help an older neighbour with their wheelie bins on rubbish/recycling days.

Give a compliment – acknowledge what someone in your life has done well.

Mental Health Awarness Week is during 5–11 October, for more info go to: www.mentalhealth.org.nz

IHC in your community Take a moment to connect with someone with an intellectual disability and do what you want to do, when you want to do it, with a new friend. IHC’s volunteer program is all about one to one friendships! We found that people with intellectual disabilities spend the majority of their time with family members or paid staff and they don’t have the same chances to make friends as everyone else. You can make a difference in the life of someone by taking the time to get to know them and supporting them to achieve goals in their life. It’s not hard! You decide what you want 16

to do with your friend and when you want to do it. We match you with someone who has similar interests to you so that you both have fun. Rimutaka Crossing Memorial Re-enactment March

This September marks 100 years since the first of the famous First World War marches across the Rimutakas. These marches were undertaken by troops at Featherston Camp at the conclusion of their infantry training there. Waved off by local citizens, they marched in full kit over the ranges before bivouacking for the night at Kaitoke. After another night spent out on manoeuvres in Maymorn, they marched through Upper Hutt to Trentham Camp for a final spell of training before departing for the War. These marches were major public events with local people lining the route to farewell the men. On Sunday, September 27th, a 21km re-enactment of these marches will be undertaken by descendants of the original troops, along with current service personnel. These marchers will arrive in Upper Hutt at 11:00 am, where the public is invited to join them for a march down Main Street to the Civic Centre. This will be followed by a family event at Griffin Field, Trentham (alongside the former CIT site), featuring military equipment displays, food stalls and children’s entertainment.
