The Month That Was: July Horrible Holiday Programme Inspired by the books and magazines published by Scholastic, we had a horrible time during our recent programmes for the “horrible holidays”. When it is wet and dreary outside, what could be better than having some horrible fun at the library? Children were busy making cardboard castles, building pyramids, knitting bandages, weaving loombands in the “workhouse”, creating their own horrible play and enjoying some strange sensations with gloopy Oobleck. Die hards were unfazed by our horrible storyteller’s awful tales and survived bouts of medieval games as well. We now say hello to the new school term so make sure you check out page 19 for more information on all the regular children’s programmes we have running here at the library.

See page 19 for for more photos of our horrible holiday fun.

Community Networking Forum Upper Hutt City Council’s Library, Activation and Community Development teams collaborated to offer a workshop on Facebook, Social Media and Marketing. The event was well attended with representatives from local community groups, sporting organisation, and business owners.

Poets in Pyjamas Our Poets in Pyjamas evening went off with a hoot and a toot! Our PJ-wearing poets, Jane the pain & Merle the pearl wowed the crowd with their rhymes and stories! Make sure you check our next pyjama event, happening on Friday the 21st of August: Puppies in Pyjamas!

Connecting Communities @ the Library 3D Printing Workshop To celebrate 2015 Youth Week back in May the library hosted a 3D printing workshop which invited students from local colleges to come and design their own 3D object using the same sculpting techniques as employed in the film industry. The workshop involved the students designing 3D models then printing them with a 3D printer. The workshop was attended by 12 students from Heretaunga College, Hutt International Boys School and St Patrick’s College. The group came up with some truly amazing designs in the session and they were excited to see what they were able to create with a little basic training. Their creations included crazy creatures and other interesting objects which came to life via the 3D printer. Feedback from this event was very positive with many students asking for future sessions to be arranged. The workshop even got some students interested in learning more about digital design and they were keen to look at doing further study on the subject. The 3D printing workshop was offered by Wellington Makerspace with funding from Creative Communities. Wellington Makerspace is a professional creative product design business & educational trust. Huge thanks to Lee and Wolf from Makerspace for coming to run the workshop and Creative Communities for providing the funding.

Revelle Jackson 1918-2015 Currently on display on the Library’s Heritage Wall is a memorial exhibition commemorating the work of highly regarded Upper Hutt photographer Revelle Jackson, who died recently at the age of 96. Jackson and his family emigrated to New Zealand from England in the 1950s and settled in the Mangaroa Valley. Operating from his own studio, Jackson took a wide range of photographs, including family portraits, candid snaps of social occasions, and news photos for the Upper Hutt Leader. His fascinating images provide an invaluable documentary record

of Upper Hutt life during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. In 1997 Jackson generously donated his entire photographic archive to Upper Hutt City Library and over 8000 of his images are now available on our Recollect website where they have proven a hugely popular local history resource. Any questions or comments please contact Reid Perkins, Community Heritage Coordinator at the Library, email archives@uhcc.govt.nz , or phone 5272130.

Due to the popularity of some of our items, the wait period for holds can often be quite lengthy. In some cases customers have to wait as long as five months to receive a popular book. To reduce wait times on popular materials, we are reducing the loan period to two weeks for items with five or more holds on them. This will hopefully ensure that customers do not have to wait any longer than three months for their hold to be filled. We understand two weeks may be a tight timeframe for some of our users to finish reading their book but we would like to ensure everyone gets their requests in a timely manner. We also regularly purchase additional copies of popular works to help meet demand. This change will come into effect on the 1st of August 2015.
