The Month That Was: June Worldwide Knit in Public Day On Saturday the 13th of June, Upper Hutt City Library got behind Worldwide Knit in Public Day and hosted a morning of knitting in the library. It was a beautiful sunny morning and participants of all ages got together to knit peggy squares which were used to decorate our Library tree. These types of events are great at bringing the community together, one woman who is new to the area was thrilled to be able to come along and meet new people.
Matariki Storytime Upper Hutt City Library welcomed in the Màori New Year with a Matariki Storytime! Children from Totara Park Kindergarten, Pinehaven Playcentre, Matariki Kindergarten and the general public helped celebrate Matariki at the Library. Stories and songs were shared and the children decorated delicious star cookies, all of which were eaten on the spot. Ngá mihi o te tau hou
Cheers to Volunteers Evening Over 130 local volunteers enjoyed a night of fun, food, drinks, music and thanks as Upper Hutt said “cheers!” to its volunteers on June 17th. Volunteers were applauded for their selfless contribution to Upper Hutt City by Mayor Wayne Guppy. We would also like to take this opportunity to give a huge thanks to all our volunteers who help us keep the library running!

Connecting Communities @ the Library Friday Fables Friday Fables is a fortnightly programme run in the Rotary Lounge at the library. The programme is designed for adults with disabilities and sees them get together to share stories, poems and songs. The atmosphere is one of warmth and laughter, every member is full of smiles and eager to participate. The programme was established back in 2011 by Helen Thomas, our lovely Host Team Leader, and has been running successfully every fortnight since. This interactive group, not only provides a fun environment, it also provides a forum for companionship for disabled adults. It is open to anyone with any disability and the main objective is for participants to be offered a programme tailored to meet their needs and give them a sense of belonging to the library. The success of Friday Fables has seen other New Zealand libraries show interest in the model and look at getting similar programmes up and running in their own libraries. The library is an ideal setting for this programme and strives to engage all attendees regardless of their personal challenges. These types of programmes are truly rewarding for library staff and the community. People in the library observing the sessions are also full of smiles as the happiness of the group is really quite contagious. Friday Fables welcomes any new members with disabilities to join. This month the programme is running on the 3rd, 17th &31st of July at 10:30am.

Just download the app from Google Play or the Appstore, find Upper Hutt City Library and enter your barcode and password.
Important Lending Update: Waiting Too Long For Your Holds? Due to the popularity of some of our items, the wait period for holds can often be quite lengthy. In some cases customers have to wait as long as five months to receive a popular book. To reduce wait times on popular materials, we are reducing the loan period to two weeks for items with five or more holds on them. This will hopefully ensure that customers do not have to wait any longer than three months for their hold to be filled. We understand two weeks may be a tight timeframe for some of our users to finish reading their book but we would like to ensure everyone gets their requests in a timely manner. We also regularly purchase additional copies of popular works to help meet demand. This change will come into effect on the 1st of August 2015. 15

Do You Remember the City Status Celebrations in 1966? On May 28th 1966 Upper Hutt was officially declared a city, having reached the requisite population threshold of 20,000. A street parade and other festivities were held to celebrate the occasion, with the Governor General Sir Bernard Fergusson presiding over the formal City Status proclamation ceremony in front of a large crowd at Maidstone Park. Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of this important event in Upper Hutt’s history and the Upper Hutt City Council, are already in the planning stages for a variety of commemoration activities.
