The Month That Was: September Poetry Evening On Friday August 28th Upper Hutt City Library held its 15th Annual Poetry Competition. The theme this year was Time and most entries came from locals but there were a number from around the country and even one from Rarotonga and another from Tasmania. Over 120 entries were received in the adult section and 140 in the children’s section.

Tiata was the MC for the children’s and teen’s prizegiving cermony.

August 28th is National Poetry Day and our poetry competition was part of a nationwide day of events. We joined in on the celebrations by holding a poetry evening consisting of a live band, an open mic session and an award ceremony. Our MC for the adult prize giving was Maggie Rainey-Smith. local writer, poet, essayist and reviewer. Maggie has a passion for books and in her leisure time, takes a weekly creative writing class and book group at a local prison and is a regular reviewer on Beattie’s Book Blog.

Connecting Communities @ the Library

September is national heritage month and we thought we would take this opportunity to highlight our very own heritage collection. The Upper Hutt City Library Heritage Collection is made up of a wide range of original heritage material, including photographs, newspapers, archives, manuscripts, maps, oral history tapes and other material relating to the history of Upper Hutt and its people. Our interactive database Recollect provides easy online access to our heritage material making these local treasures readily available to the community. The Upper Hutt City Library Heritage Collections are maintained by our Community Heritage Coordinator, Reid Perkins. Reid does an amazing job of looking after the collection as well as archiving new items as they come in. Materials are donated by a wide range of community groups, clubs, churchs and business enterprises, as well as by many individuals. Reid is also regularly invited to speak to local community groups about our heritage collection and the importance of preserving our valuable local history. In August he was invited to speak at a meeting of SeniorNet, a non-profit organisation providing computer and internet education for those aged over 55. He spoke to an audience of around 30 people about Recollect, explaining how to use and contribute to this valuable local community resource. In June, four classes from Plateau School visited Reid at the Library. The visit included looking at old slides, unknown technology for these children, and concluded with a photo quiz where students had to determine in which decade a particular photo had been taken. The children really enjoyed their visit, writing to the Library afterwards to say thank you. In these letters, one student stated “my favourite type of photograph was the tiny ones that you had to hold up to the sun to see the colour in them” (referring to the slides), while another wrote that “all these photos and activities made me feel happy and made me want to do your job!” We encourage you to check out our archives either through Recollect or on our facebook page as they are truly a fascinating glimpse at the Upper Hutt of yesteryear. Check out Recollect: uhcl.recollect.co.nz or facebook.com/upperhuttheritage

Rimutaka Crossing Memorial Re-enactment March This September marks 100 years since the first of the famous First World War marches across the Rimutakas. These marches were undertaken by troops at Featherston Camp at the conclusion of their infantry training. Waved off by local citizens, they marched in full kit over the ranges before bivouacking for the night at Kaitoke. After another night spent out on manoeuvres in Maymorn, they marched through Upper Hutt to Trentham Camp for a final spell of training before departing for the Great War. These marches were major public events with local people lining the route to farewell the men.
