Research Funding
With research funding in agriculture, marine, biological and space sciences totaling over 300 million annually, the University of Hawai‘i is one of the state’s largest economic drivers after tourism and the military.
RICH IN
Research
Geographically, Hawai‘i is a natural laboratory for the sciences providing a rich landscape for research.
The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is recognized for its pioneering research in such fields as oceanography, astronomy, Pacific Islands and Asian area studies, linguistics, education, tropical agriculture, cancer, and genetics. We are one of thirty-two universities in the nation to hold the distinction of being a land, sea, and space grant institution and ranked amongst the top public for funding universities in research by the National Science Foundation.
Mānoa Firsts
A Leader in Global Research The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa owns and operates Coconut Island or Moku o Lo‘o, the only research facility in the world built entirely on a coral reef. The Institute for Biogenesis Research at the John A. Burns School of Medicine cloned the world’s first mouse and was the first in the world to pioneer genetic and reproductive research with transgenic mice, also known as glowing mice. The Hawai‘i Space Flight Laboratory gives UH Mānoa the distinction of being the only university in the world to have both satellite fabrication capabilities and unique, direct access to orbital space. Scientists at the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources were the first in the world to develop a disease resistant, transgenic papaya species known as the UH Rainbow papaya. UH Mānoa became one of the first universities in the U.S. to be a Department of Agriculture designated aquaculture center for demonstrated projects involving shrimp, fish, and snails in Kāne‘ohe Bay.

The State of Hawai‘i Has Two Official Languages:
Hawaiian and English Hawaiian (‘Olelo Hawai’i) is a Polynesian language spoken on all of the inhabited islands of Hawai‘i with only minor dialectical differences between them. It is recognized as an official language of the state of Hawai’i. Today, the number of Hawaiian speakers grows steadily in homes and in the schools.
State Motto:
Ua mau ke ea o ka āina i ka pono (The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness)
Ma-noa Valley
Ma- noa Valley has long
provided sustenance for its
people: in traditional times, its
many expertly-managed water
sources allowed the lands to
produce an abundance of kalo, feeding both the ali'i and the
common people. Today Ma- noa continues to be a place of
abundance, especially at our
university where ‘ike (knowledge), kuleana (responsibility and
stewardship), and hakuhia
(innovation) provide sustenance for all who dwell here.
O‘ahu
