n. vast and deep
Like its literal definition in Hawaiian, the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa offers a vast array of opportunities unique as the place we are named for.
In traditional times, Manoa valley was expertly cared for and cultivated by Native Hawaiians. In return, it provided an abundance of sustenance and protection for its residents. Today, Manoa continues to furnish the resources that enable our institution to be a thriving land-, sea-, space-, and sun- grant university. In keeping with the Native Hawaiian manner of reciprocity, these blessings are passed on to you in the form of academic excellence so that you are equipped to take care of yourself, humanity, Hawai‘i, and the world.
WELCOME TO AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE LIKE NONE FOUND ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD.

His drawings and designs are a further extension of his mission of conservation through aloha ‘aina. M.S. Horticulture alumnus of the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, his work at Limahuli Garden, Kalaupapa National Park, and Lyon Arboretum led to story telling. Shepard uses fabric and fashion to tell the story behind the 'why' of aloha ‘aina. Each piece is designed and sewn in Hawai’i. “Hapu‘u ‘Ilima Mauka To Makai” From the native Hapu‘u tree fern found in Manoa valley to the O‘ahu island flower ‘ilima found growing on the coast, this illustration embodies the resources found within the ahupua‘a of Waik-ık-ı. An ahupua‘a is a traditional land division that encompasses a watershed extending from mauka to makai (mountain to ocean). Traditionally in Hawai‘i, community boundaries were defined by watersheds that provided all the resources for sustainable living: fish, agriculture, consistent fresh water, and upland forests reserves. Wise management fostered a thriving community. Today the ahupua‘a of Waik-ık-ı continues to be one of the most abundant and prosperous. The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa is an equal opportunity, affirmative action institution. A special mahalo to UH Athletics, Native Hawaiian Place of Learning Advancement Office, Ka Leo O Hawai‘i, Jose Magno, Ken Reyes, Shane Grace, Nolan Omura, David Shepard, UH Bookstore, Cameron Brooks, and our UH Rainbow Warrior students for their image contributions.
