2023 ACCOUNTABILITY REPORT

On the cover: Students sit under a tree in the Cullen Family Plaza. (University of Houston)

Established in 1977 to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population and continued demand for higher education in the Greater Houston region, the University of Houston System is the largest provider of comprehensive university services in the Texas Gulf Coast. Today, its institutions rank among the best in the country for moving students up the economic ladder and provide some of the nation’s leading degree programs.

The UH System's overarching vision is to become one of the nation's finest metropolitan university systems, and it has identified strategic goals to help fulfill its bold quest. This report details each university’s strides toward those goals, showcasing the challenges we face and the enriching impact we’re making. I am pleased to submit it for your consideration.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON SYSTEM

The University of Houston System provides access to comprehensive higher education programs and services to the diverse community of students in the Houston metropolitan area and beyond through the complementary missions of its four universities. The UH System’s research and scholarship are globally significant, nationally competitive and serve as an engine for economic development, while its public service activities enhance the quality of life in the region.

The UH System comprises four universities. Relationships among UH System institutions are collegial and collaborative. Credits transfer easily from one institution to another. Each UH System institution has a distinct mission; together, the institutions' missions and programs complement and support one another.

University of Houston

The University of Houston is the leading public research university in Houston and among the largest in Texas. It is nationally competitive and offers a comprehensive range of programs, including undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, distance and continuing education studies. As the oldest of the four universities within the UH System, UH has been classified as a Tier One institution by virtue of its “very high research activity” ranking by the Carnegie Foundation. It is also home to a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, one of America’s most prestigious honor societies, and the Cougars joined the Big 12 athletic conference in 2023. UH extends its community reach by serving students through instructional sites in Sugar Land and Katy. In 2020, the University launched the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine to produce primary care physicians who deliver compassionate, high-value care to underserved communities. With over 46,500 students enrolled, the University awards more than 11,000 degrees each year and boasts an alumni network of over 316,000 individuals, many of whom live and work in Texas.

University of Houston–Clear Lake

The University of Houston-Clear Lake has been opening doors for accessible education since 1974 and continues to increase its regional university rankings, serving as a destination for lifelong learning, economic growth and global impact. Located in southeast Houston on a beautiful 524-acre campus, UHCL serves nearly 9,000 students. UHCL offers more than 90 programs, including undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs from its four colleges, with additional instructional sites in Pearland and the Texas Medical Center. More than 75,000 alumni are leaders in their fields and include CEOs, scientists, artists, astronauts and more.

University of Houston–Downtown

Located in the heart of Houston, University of Houston-Downtown educates more than 14,000 students annually and has an alumni base of more than 67,000. Graduates emerge from the institution prepared to serve as leaders in law enforcement, business, science, education, nonprofit management, the arts and other industries. Students benefit from its convenient campus — accessible by light rail and from the city’s Bayou Greenways — and curriculum delivering real-world learning experiences. In recent years, UHD’s economic impact on the region totaled $2 billion. With a growing campus — including the new College of Sciences & Technology Building — and bolstered graduation rates, that sum should continue to grow as UHD enters its 50th year of serving Houstonians.

University of Houston–Victoria

The University of Houston-Victoria offers more than 50 academic programs to nearly 4,000 students residing in the Gulf Coast region and beyond. In addition to its campus, an instructional site in Katy and a highly ranked distance education program expand UHV’s educational outreach. The Victoria campus continues to grow with a health and wellness center expected to be completed in Spring 2024. UHV is also a member of the Houston Guided Pathways to Success initiative, which is aimed at increasing higher education completion rates.
