HOSPITAL MEDICINE
DIVISION OVERVIEW
As a team of board-certified Pediatric Hospitalists with a diverse array of expertise and interests, we provide inclusive, compassionate patient and family-centered care rooted in a deep understanding of our unique regional needs. This care is enriched by evidence-based medicine, quality improvement, and attention to health equity as we train the next generation of skilled, empathetic, and knowledgeable physicians to nurture a healthier Hawai’i.
Our focus on mentoring and developing future physicians, particularly pediatricians, remains resolute. Our division continues to refine and revise our inpatient hospitalist curriculum to provide residents from our program and visitors from programs in the US and around the world a rigorous academic environment.
Hospitalists take on roles to inspire medical students whether they are interested in pursuing a career in pediatrics or not. All division members are preceptors for third year medical students during their third year pediatrics rotation and many are POD-visors, longitudinal clinical mentors (LCM), advisors for the Pediatric Interest Group (PIG), interviewers for the medical school, simulation based session leaders, and Practice Based Learning (PBL) tutors.
Our unique position allows us to conduct outcomes research and implement impactful quality improvement initiatives in pediatric inpatient care. Throughout the year, our division members have been actively involved in institutional, local, and national research and QI projects. As an entire division, we completed the project “Results of Labs Pending at Pediatric Hospital Discharge: Closing the Gap to Improve Patient Safety” that was presented both at local and national patient safety conferences. This poster highlighted the continued work that our division has done to ensure that labs ordered during the hospitalization and whose results return after discharge are shared with the appropriate providers with intervention occurring in a timely manner.
The Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine Division at Kapiolani Medical Center remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence in care, education, and research. We are proud of our accomplishments and continue to inspire and contribute to the future of Pediatrics.
