Cost Saving Tips for Offices We hear the term “going green” more and more, but in 2010, especially with budget reductions underway, there are simple yet important things we all can do to reduce workplace energy consumption plus save money: •

Turn off lights in offices and conferences rooms when they aren’t in use. If you’re going to be in meetings that are longer than thirty minutes, remember to turn off lights.

Turn of office equipment such as computers, monitors, copiers, printers and scanners (1) when they are not needed (2) during the evening or whenever you leave for the day and (3) on weekends. Computer monitors are responsible for more than one third of a computer’s energy consumption.

Print draft documents in EconoMode or “draft” mode to save toner.

Unplug equipment that is rarely used (electronic staplers, scanners, etc.)

With RecycleMania in full swing, we should remind ourselves to continue recycling paper, plastic, aluminum, cardboard, etc.

We can institute our own “Office Supplies Swap”. Sometimes we order supplies and forget we even have them. When cleaning out our offices we let each other know about extra supplies that we no longer need.

Wouldn’t it be great if we notice immediate and significant savings if we’d start to implement these tips. If you have other ways of saving energy, please share your ideas with the department. TIP: Create a reoccurring calendar reminder to help you remember to turn off your lights, computers, printers, etc., each day before you leave work. Donations Needed for 20th Annual UH Staff Council/Faculty Senate Spring Egg Hunt

DATE: Saturday, March 27, 2010 TIME: Activities to begin at 9:00 a.m. PLACE: UC Satellite Park Area The Staff Council/Faculty Senate Egg Hunt Team is seeking donations for our annual Spring Egg Hunt. This is open to all UH staff and faculty children up to 12 years old. Please help us to continue this tradition. We need small toys, stuffed animals, books, stickers, small note pads, coloring books, pencils, crayons, or T‐shirts. We are also taking donations of candy – small individually wrapped pieces that will fit into plastic eggs. PLEASE: No chocolate (it melts too quickly). Last year, we filled about 3000 eggs and 250 to 300 children hunted for those eggs & prizes. Donations given by Plant Ops employees will be coordinated by Cindy Pennington (Ext. 38077 or room GEN 121). Last date to donate is: March 19, 2010. Thank you for your participation.
